I feel as though a CM with a 6.5' would be purchased by literally everybody looking at a Tundra, with the exception of somebody looking for a DC with 8'. I would trade my current 17' DC 6.5' in on a CM 6.5' in a heartbeat.

While people would certainly buy a crewmax 6.5’ bed a lot of you are grossly overestimating the demand in the overall market. There’s a reason that with every truck that offers all bed and cab configs crew cab short bed and extended/double cab 6.5’ bed are by far the most commonly bought.

That may be partly because Dodge's "short bed" has always been 6.5' long so their Megacab short bed had a 6.5' bed.

But that’s not relevant really since now you’re talking heavy duty trucks. All heavy duty trucks in the market have nothing shorter than a 6.5’ bed.

The Ram 1500’s have a true short bed like every other half ton.

I'm not sure I'm following your logic here? Yes, the manufacturers have their reasons for having the cab configs and such that they do. However, that being said, the Tundra owners I have talked to made their truck purchase based on a choice they had to make, which is more important; cab space or bed space. If you take that "one or the other" out of it, I would put money on the CM 6.5' being the best selling model.

I don’t doubt there are plenty of Tundra owners that had to make a choice. That doesn’t change the fact that the crew cab short bed is still the most popular configuration sold in the half ton truck segment. I would be interested in the logic behind why if the Tundra had a crew max standard bed option they would sell more of those than short bed crew max models when the F150, Ram 1500, Sierra 1500 and Silverado 1500 all easily sell more short bed crew cabs than standard bed crew cabs. If we are putting money down I’m going with what manufacturers have always said sell more over what some forum goers say.

Certainly it’s all conjecture since Toyota doesn’t currently offer the option but I don’t really see how the Tundra buyer would differ from the buyer of every other product in the segment. Besides, while people certainly had to make a choice in bed length or can space If they actually really NEEDED both, they would have bought something else. I like my Toyota’s but I wouldn’t put brand loyalty ahead of buying the actual vehicle I need that fits my needs. I think people tend to forget that people on forums are a vocal minority. Most consumers aren’t on forums. Everyone out there also claims they want small regular cab trucks yet no one actually bought regular cab tacomas and now Toyota (and one else) sells regular cab midsizers.

Don’t get me wrong, I think they should offer it. I just think sales will be in line with every other half ton truck and more people at the end of the day would still buy the crew max short bed.

I personally have a CM which was a mixup and I've learned to enjoy it. But my last Tundra was a DC and I think everything about a DC is better. Of course I'd have a cm 6.5 ft bed in a perfect world but at the end of the day my reasons for a pick up are for the bed, other wise I'd have an suv. More bed space, more payload, have an excuse to not give as many people rides, and they simply look much better IMO.

I'm sure others have brought up that it seems that with the DC 8 ft frame Toyota could roll out a small run of a CM with a 7ish ft bed with out a lot of expense added, but what do I know.

Apparently I'm not current on my Ram info. I just checked and they started offering a true short bed in 2009.

Before that the shortest bed offered with any cab was 6.5' long.

... and the Megacab was offered in Ram 1500 from 2007-2009. (Didn't know that either.)
