Hey guys I have a 2019 Tundra with 22k miles, that recently started Shifting really hard in the first few miles. Especially noticeable in the 1-2 or maybe 2-3 gear change, I’m about 80% sure it’s the 1-2 shift. It jerks the whole truck but then settles in and smooths out after warming up.

Any ideas suggestions? I’m taking it to the dealer Monday but looking for a little education as this is my first Tundra.

To give you a little preview of possible scenarios, your dealer may say: (1) It's normal when it's cold, it'll "wear-in" and get better with more miles, and refuse to take any action (Maybe they're right, maybe it'll smooth right out this summer); (2) If they see you're not happy with that response, Toyota may authorize them to attempt a fluid flush, which may or may not fix the problem; (3) If the flush doesn't work, the dealer will likely tell you the transmission has to be replaced under warranty. My impression from owner experiences on forums is that Toyota will not let them pull the pan on a warranty transmission.

No, it's not normal. While the odds of getting a less than optimal Toyota transmission are probably about the same as COVID-19 infection, you may have won the crap lottery. Maybe they'll fix it with less than a transmission swap, but new transmissions either work fine out of the box forever...or they don't. Don't let them drag out the schedule until your drive train warranty is over. Jmho.

There was a TSB for transmission update a few months ago. Take it to the dealership and see if they can help you out.

I had a 2015 with 50000 miles do this to me last September. Hard shifting off the brake pedal usually first to second gear, which eventually added into 5 gear at well. I reported it Toyota and they found nothing. One day I rolled into Toyota after it was shifting hard because 'they' said bring it in when it does it. The service manager was my shotgun when we took it for spin and he felt it. I let him drive it back to the shop. He told my service advisor to schedule it for a transmission change under warranty and gave me a loaner. I got the truck back 2 days later. Running clean now.

My best advise is to talk with them about it. Let them check to created your paper trail. And, then drive it to the dealer when it is happened and see if the advisor or SM can go for a spin. I wish you luck. As many have mentioned, it can be quite a few things already mentioned. For me, the hard shifting started light and eventually moved to quick jerking movements. It definately became worst. Good luck!

What does "hard shifting" mean? I am not very good at vehicle lingo like that. The only thing I can say I notice that seems weird is when I pull into my driveway, which is a long uphill drive before entering the garage, I come to a stop and gently push the gas and it will jerk forward sometimes. Is that bad or normal for Tundra?
