Why you guys complaining? I was getting 16MPG in town and 20, maybe 21 MPG on highway in my Volvo, which was 1 full metric ton less than Tundra ;) Premium gas, btw. Dollar-wise, stock Tundra TRD Offroad was just tad over driving a Volvo, thanks to 87 vs 93 savings. Now it is more thirsty, yes, but it has a few hundreds of extra lbs, too, and it can go just anywhere.

Lifted, all terrain tires, sliders and skids, with a tent canopy on the back, results in 10-12 mpg for me. Also affected by living on a small mountain. Short trips kill the economy up hills.

Try climbing up in tow/haul mode. If the transmission manages to lock the converter up, MPG would not suffer that bad.

Having come from a Jetta TDI and a Prius getting over 50 mpg each without much effort, the full size truck was a hard pill to swallow. That being said, the "hypermiling" practices I picked up still apply to this brick. As other members have said, drive like an old man. Houston to San Antonio I set in behind a semi going between 65-70 on I-10 and managed a little over 22 mpg. Yes, it was annoying to go that speed, but was more amusing to me to see north of 20 mpg haha. At the end of the day, its a big heavy vehicle that won't win efficiency awards and will cost you to fill up. If I still had a commute, I'd still own the Prius.

It's bad, and I refuse to feel bad. Saving for a prius so I can park it and use it as an RV.

Last weekend I got 14.1 mpg hand-calculated going across the state and back on $2.39/gal e85 but that was the last run on my worn out tires. The aero mods do help i.e. grill, transmission/cat plate, tonneau. Even the side steps seem to help somehow... It must keep the air turbulent around the back tire, who knows.

Now to see what happens with the LT275 tires.

Well, it is mostly moonshine in the gas tank, so maybe the truck is inebriated? Usually it's the same cost per mile as gas but the farm bureau sells it for cheap.

Also, did a little math yesterday.

With my daily milage and assuming 80s mpg it would still take me 18 years to see and ROI based on gas alone if I got the prius.

Exactly! Best I ever got was 12.8. If I’m on the interstate and not North of 80 I feel like I may as well just walk. :)

I'm getting high 16s/17 on the current tank. At least, I was, during the trip out to our property last weekend (20 mi of back roads, 35-55 mph).
I haven't looked since the last week of work commute, which is a 30 min commute that I try to do in 3 min. It still takes 25-30 min, but I try.
Anyway, I'm tickled if I see anything over 15. But I don't expect it often, or feel like Toyota sucks, or I need mods if I'm not getting 28 mpg.
15 mpg from a full-size 3 ton truck with a 300+ hp V8? That approaches sorcery if you've driven anything from 30 or more years ago.

I read the post from that thread. what I don't get is why a Sabm and a throttle body coolant bypass would make for more MPG. The air will be coming in colder and more dense, which equals to the ECU injecting more fuel. And if I remember the SABM was more for boosted applications. I would also venture to say that, "if" you did those mods listed it would take quite sometime to recoup the money. Stay off the right pedal if you want to save fuel is the way I see it on these rolling aerodynamic bricks, lol.

Warmer air is usually better for efficiency as is high altitude driving. The manifold vacuum is less and pumping losses a little better

FWIW, I have found limiting yourself by rpm, not speed, returns the greatest results.

<2k rpm. Which, in utah can mean I'm doing like 50 going up parleys canyon with the camper and boat.

If I ever get pulled over on my way to work and I'm asked, "do you know how fast you were going?"
    I'll say, "yeah,...2000 RPM in 6th gear."

All kidding aside, I probably peek at my rpm needle more than the speedo.

Ok it officially gets the same or better on the highway with the LT275/65R-18 Defender LTXs vs the old P255/70R-18 MS/2s. 14.3mpg this trip vs 14.1 last week. Not too shabby for cruising at 70 when the epa rating is 8 city / 11 highway.

I forgot one other thing I did a couple years back OP can try, the rear pig has redline 75w-85 GL5 in it. That stuff is stupid slippery.
