Having an inefficient cooler has to be more effective than no cooler at all.

The fix was way cheaper for Toyota if they would just have done it correctly. An aux cooler stand alone is much cheaper than the condensor w/cooler they removed. Rather than cheaping out totally with nothing instead. There is no excuse for these hot temps over 221 F which is the manufactures spec for the trans. It will come back to bite them it will just take time.

Where does the 221°F for the transmission temperature spec come from? Where is it documented that is the spec?

There isn't. It's a number that the OP stated that wasn't correct and people just keep repeating it.

I have a 2019 Limited and have recently been doing mods and trying to stay up on todays things with these trucks. Coming from a racing background different oils have different boiling points, breakdown points etc. If you are that worried about it currently, you could always switch to a superior oil. A lot of these companies offer great deals of info if you talk to the tech departments.

Here is a link to amsoil which makes a really good product and is tested to 300+ degrees Fahrenheit.

There are absolutely no temperature specifications published anywhere. That is what I am still trying to get on a daily basis from Toyota. The only thing that I have confirmed is that the truck should throw a p0711 check engine light when the ATF reaches 221 degrees. Which is for high temperatures

You, however might be right. But I have already called Amsoil to try and find out some information on there WS approved ATF fluid. They would not tell me technical specifications of fluid temperatures. Because that is all proprietary information

It was somewhat a rhetorical question. The 221°F came from DTC P0711 which is for a transmission temperature sensor failure.

Wrong. According to TIS, P0711 indicates a problem with the ATF temperature sensor and the sensor is defective.

Edit: my transmission temps have been as high as 230-235°F driving normally unloaded, and I’ve never had a P0711 code thrown. Your spreading misinformation that leads people to make incorrect conclusions.

The metric system is way too logical and practical. Canada should just swap to our more inefficient system so there's no more confusion.

Nope, there is no code set for a 221f temperature.

Correct. Certain conditions have to be met and the ecm is seeing a constant 221F which will tell the ecu module that the sensor is in error. Has nothing to do with the WS temp.

    Just for informational purposes...

I got the OBD bluetooth adapter today and here are the trans temp results:
First is just sitting in driveway at idle. Engine warm, no load.
Second is after about 20 minutes of driving... mix of back roads and stop/go traffic.
    No trailers, no aggressive driving.
Bone stock 2020 Crewmax with 35" tires.

    NOPE.

Typically Id like to see the trans temp closer to engine coolant temp though.

217F is where mine was last time I did a running check with no load and no cooler. 186F with the cooler so it's doing the job. all in low to mid 80s ambient temps. You should thaw out your engine oil before driving I'd be concerned about that.

Just went 200 miles with two adults, two kids, and approx. 500lbs in bed. Max temp I saw was 213 degrees while sitting at stoplights. While cruising in D, without tow haul, I saw between 195 and 201. 78 degrees and sunny. 4E697778-4859-484F-A24E-05C26FE3443C.jpg

I talked to my trusted toyota tech who is also a good comrade of mine. His personal opinion is if you really want to install a cooler “go ahead,” he also stated he hasnt seen and tranny failures on tundras and feels a cooler isn’t necessary.

with that ill probably look into a quote since ill get a deal.

Tow heavy and often, challenging off road - cooler needed

Normal use, occasional haul/tow - no cooler needed.

    It's really that simple.
