he stated GM removed their trans coolers as well. Multiple people showed pictures and link direct videos of 2017-2020 gm 1500's all have trans coolers. He beat around almost all of the questions as well, never really answering any of them.

interesting he removed it. I looked at the video around 11 am this morning and it was still up. I wonder if he just realized some misinformation or if he is going to put out a new video on this topic

I googled the living hell out of that and couldn’t find a single instance.

I did find Gm indicating the Allison can handle some pretty high temps though...

I noticed that as well. There are actually two coolers. First it goes through the radiator and then an air/oil cooler on top of the AC condenser (on some models).

You rarely see high temps though. Highest I have seen was 198* going 5-10 mph down a long pass due to the exhaust brake being on the whole time. Most temps are 140-165* in 80* weather. Now if a regen hits, the temp will go up another 10-15*.

Well gentlemen I decided to go on the side of caution and bought a trans cooler, I am going to make the 2800 mile trip W/O it however as some parts are back ordered.

I am already out of warranty so I figure there isn’t anything to loose, except a transmission of course. I got one of those Veepeak dongles and downloaded the OBD Fusion app to monitor temps, will post results if I deem them interesting enough.

An experience based note on the Allison: my employers fleet of ‘18-‘19 Chevy 3/4 tons has been well used in the oil fields of west texas. The iron trailers are 14k capacity, overloaded to the point of bending axles. These D-max Allison combos have handled everything thrown at them and not failed.
Trans temps hold about 198 all day no matter the ambient. Couldn’t have done the job with a 1/2 ton of ANY brand.

What I’m saying is transmission coolers work. If YOU feel you want one, for whatever reason you deem necessary, do it!
If you bought a 1/2 ton truck with the intention of towing, and expect to get longevity and resale value out of it, you’re gonna be disappointed.
Not trying to start any shit, I enjoy evaluating the opinions and facts of all of y’alls experiences with the same truck I have.

edit: with the intention of towing HEAVY and OFTEN.

You’ve got a ‘19 Pro and you’re already out of warranty? How many miles do you have on your rig? Have you experienced any transmission issues?

    it’s only a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty right?
    Or am I mistaken?
36,000+ miles, I honestly don’t know right now I do know three weeks ago I had the 35,000 mile “service” done. It’s a fluid level check and tire rotation... but anyways I drive a lot, minimum of 900 miles every two weeks as that’s my rotation. I also like to drive and enjoy my truck, fishing trips, sand dunes, mountain cruises... it adds up quick.

edit: no trans issues yet. I know the trans is aware of the 295/75R18s though. Cruise control has it shifting more than I think it should on the highway. I am going back to the stock Michelin’s for the upcoming trip with a trailer.

So I have my truck at Toyota service anyway and so I asked about the transmission cooler and if they'd be willing to install one so they're installing a Hayden transmission cooler with all the rest OEM Toyota parts for $950.

I wasnt that worried tbh but if they are willing to do it for the price i i said fuck it. I plan on keeping trick for 10 yrs so its money well spent i suppose

I have been following this thread from the beginning. I have a 2020 TRD DC limited. I tow a smallish micro camper that is under 2000 lbs. I sold my 16' Tundra 4.6 which did not have a tow package that would constantly shift under the lightest load. I had it over heat twice in the 60000 miles I had it. I did install a trans cooler but sold it shortly afterwards. I did contact Toyota and express my concerns of not having a cooler on the next Truck. I was told that the radiator did the additional cooling.....something to the effect over more cooling capacity in the radiator but don't quote me? They gave me a case number just to document my concerns. To date I have not had any issues while towing our smallish camper. I do tow in D w/ tow haul mode. The dealer's service dept. where I bought the truck from stated to do so as did the dealer where I go locally also stated use D and tow/haul. I do use s4 and under for any step downhill grades. I will sit this one out for a while and see what happens. I am very picky about my vehicles and maintain them well under the suggested intervals. As long as the truck is under warranty I will get the Tranny serviced by Toyota every 30k. I feel I have documented my concern with the new system at less than 2000 miles of ownership with Toyota Corp. This will leave no question should something go wrong down the line. Time will tell?

I was reading up on a dodge forum all their trans overheating nightmares. Do our trucks have a trans fluid warmer that is supposed to switch off?

How are they mounting it? I can tell you its a better option to use a custom bracket instead of them mounting it against the condenser.

New to this forum. Hello everyone. So I guess I’m a bit confused on this information regarding the transmission cooler. If there is an issue with the transmission or the transmission overheats, will Toyota not cover it under warranty? I believe if a lot of tundra owners begin to have issues than Toyota might look at a solution.

i think the bigger concern is longer term. If the temps are causing damage, you likely wont have an issue during the warranty period. These are tough tough transmissions. I imagine people are afraid that they are losing long term trans life down the road

That makes sense. Just a thought, would it be a better investment to purchase a 125k platinum warranty that covers everything including the transmission and everything else. I personally would do this before spending money on a transmission cooler. That’s just me though.

I'm not really sure but if I don't like the way they mounted it I can always change it I'm not worried about that. The work will be done.

If I understand the engineering theory correctly, the trans cooler in the radiator will maintain proper trans fluid temps, warming and cooling. Auto transmissions have had a heat exchanger in the radiator for as far back as my experience goes, which is a 50’s or 60’s Studebaker Lark 6 or something like that. I was a kid when I was working on it so the details are fuzzy now.

I think I understand now. If the engine coolant stays at 180 that wouldn’t overheat the trans anyway
