Just ordered my 2018 Tundra 4x4 Crewmax Limited. Asked the salesperson about the Toyota remote starter (supposed to have something like 800 yard range) and he said it didn't work very well with the Tundra. He said you had be be close to the truck (within about the same range as the key fob).
    True?

the factory remote start turns off the engine once you open the door. Aftermarket ones will keep the engine running when you open the door and insert the key.

I would go aftermarket for the above stated reasons. I have an aftermarket and love it.

Interested in doing this myself. How difficult was the install? How long did it take you? I start sweating a bit with I think of pulling electrical wires out on a brand new truck and tapping into them. Was there a video you watched to install or just paper instructions?

It's essentially a programmed Fortin Evo-One. There is one harness, and about 6 wires to tap into. Took me less than 2 hours. All the connections are under the driver's side dash.

I purchased an Evo Fortin system for the Tacoma I had. It took 20 minutes to install because the kit was prepped with unnecessary wires taped up and essentially removed from the equation. There were two or three plugs that integrated directly with factory connectors so it was super quick and easy. This sounds like a different type of install from what you describe though. I think the longest part of the install for the Tacoma was unscrewing the dash and pulling it down out of the way just enough to make room for unplugging and plugging in connectors. However the factory key fob remote sucked. Range was poor (limited to factory fob range) and the motor died when opening the door. The 2016 tacoma was a push button start.

Yeah, he has it all prepped with only the wires you need out, the rest tied back, and the unit programmed. On the 2014-2017 there was an second harness that made it all but plug and play with the exception of like 1 wire. For the H key in the 2018 model, the configuration is different and can't use that harness.

Do any of the aftermarket remote start systems void the Toyota warranty?

I went to ziebart for the rust protection and had them install one. Theirs works with key fob and they also gave me another remote that works up to 1/4 mile. It stays running when you open the door. The unlock on the fob also still works with it started, so I dont have to try to manually unlock with key if there’s ice.

Nothing will void the entire vehicle warranty as a whole. The way a warranty works is say you install the remote start incorrectly and fry your truck electrical system...that would not be covered under warranty. But if your exhaust falls off they cant possibly say that was caused by your remote start. If you install aftermarket shocks and your lower control arm fails or some other suspension component fails, they wont cover it because theyll say the shocks you installed contributed to the failure. However if you install shocks and your engine craps out, theres no way they can say the shocks had something to do with it. Get it?

I went with compustar. Works like a champ! 3x lock activates the remote start. Factory fob is still fully functional allowing for unlocking of the doors without use of the key.

Does the factory remote work for remote starting, or do you have to use the Compustar remote exclusively?
