Hey guys, i just traded in my 2016 limited tundra for the 2018 Platinum last night, and I when I left home this morning I couldn't help but to feel like I'm second guessing my decision. Truck is great, beautiful, but the chrome grill and end caps on bumpers made my limited look so much bigger and like a boss. I was told by salesmen that the bumper on my 18 Platinum has pedestrian censors that cannot go thru metal chrome bumpers, and so they are plastic and same color as truck (magnetic grey). Anybody know if that is accurate or if there's any other chrome end caps that will work with all the new censors??

Welcome from Arizona. I have the sensors on a 2018 SR-5 with chrome bumpers.

You can see the sensor on the bumper in this picture (the small black circle to the left of the fog light). It looks like they made a hole for it in the cap.

If you decide that you want chrome bumpers you can add them. There are a few folks here who have swapped the chrome for the color match that may have the chrome ones available. Good Luck

Really? Perhaps I need more time with the same color. But I'd be happy to trade if they are compatible

Thank you Arizona. So is that the only sensor on each end of bumper?

Did you not have a good reason to replace your truck with basically the same truck 2 years newer? I just can't imagine how bumper color has you second guessing after you've done the deal.

5% less interest, 4x4, and all the new features platinum has over the limited. It is a better truck, just the optical illusion chrome makes, made my 2016 look bigger

I Paid a bunch of money to get rid of my chrome bumper ends. You can do a trade easily if you want the chrome.

So back to original question, if I was to choose the chrome, it wouldn't affect any safety sensors on the 2018 platinum?

The safty sensors are not in the bumper. They are in the grill.

The parking sensors are but chrome does not effect them because they are on the outside of the bumper.

Great, thanks. It's good to know I have that option if the same color doesn't grow on me. Damn salesmen tho!

There is a parking sensor at each end of the front bumper and there is also a sensor behind the Toyota emblem in the grill. In the rear, there are parking sensors on each end of the bumper and I believe that there are also sensors behind the tail lights that provide the rear crossing traffic alert. BTW, the rear bumpers on my truck are painted but I have seen 18's with chrome rear caps too.

I saw most of the tss with chrome, but I was told only the platinum and 1794 don't come chrome on the new '18, they said it has some extra sensor that has to go thru the plastic

Yea the salesman is pulling your chain. The parking sensors are compatible with either chrome or painted bumper end caps. You can probably find a set of the chrome ones for sale in the marketplace forums. Just make sure you get a pair that has the holes for the parking sensors.

If you do decide to swap, plan to remove the entire front bumper assembly. I plan to swap my chrome ones for paint matched here soon.

Not sure about your area but my truck is an SR-5 with the Off Road package and it came with the chrome. I think that I would have preferred the color match but with the silver the chrome looks OK too.

My '18 CM Limited has chrome end caps, and has all the safety sensors, including the ones in the end caps.

You saleman was smoking crack and blowing the smoke up your ass. How could he not be called on his line about the chrome vs plastic and the sensors? The platinum is the only color matched front bumpers- 1794 is the same truck and has chrome? How does that work??

I like chrome but my rear bumper is color matched I assume due to the x-traffic sensors and proximity sensors ... based on my experience, I don't think the color matched (plastic) bumpers will hold up as well as chrome after several years of sun ...
@aramirez73 has a chrome video I guess he is not paying attention to this thread! lol

I hope I am not pouring vinegar on your baby here, but I have a 17 Platinum and I was in the dealership the other day for routine service and they had a lifted '18 Tundra there and I was talking my service adviser about the new one they had parked there and he agreed it looks great, too bad they are going to have to take the lift off before they sell it. I asked him why and he told me that the new vehicle slow down sensors that are on the '18 models can't be lifted because the system will keep slowing you down and overriding your gas pedal. That there is no way to disable it either. I don't know if it's accurate, but it's what he told me so I thought I would share it with everyone.

@Ramses I replaced my chrome with plastic one. Mine is a 2017 SR5 with 2 holes sensors. If you're interested, I'll sell them for cheap. PM me. Thanks!
