I bought some LEDS and had planned to wire them to the factory harness on the rear drivers side look. Then I found out that in the 2018 that doesn’t work. So I tapped into the places outlined in the factory install directions. One has constant 12volt and one changes based on the overhead lights. So my question is, does the factory LED harness have a relay or something in it?

You may want to tap into the upper cargo light circuit wire underneath the driver side rear passenger scuff plate. That's what I did when I installed my bed lights. They come on whenever the key fob is used to lock or unlock the truck, when a door is opened, or when the dash switch is used.

I tried that but this is a 208 and apparently that doesn’t work in 208 and later.

You have an upper cargo/brake light so you have a cargo light circuit wire in your wiring bundle under the driver side rear passenger scuff plate. I just don't know which color wire to reference you to since my truck is a 2015. There are ways to test which wire it is however, and it is easier to tap the wire rather than routing your bed wires all the way to the driver position, taking up the driver side kick panel,
and the driver door scuff plate to get to the wire to tap. You can test the wire to tap with a PosiTap and the use of a multimeter or cheap test light. It will be a thinner gauged wire in the bundle and you can gain access to the bundle from under the truck through the drip edge or one of the rubber grommets.

I was trying this and gave up in frustration, but it turns out the multimeter I was using had a part time bad lead. I started to wonder and realized it was bad when the continuity test read zilch. I’ll try again.

When you test a wire, tap it with the pointed end of the PosiTap and body and make sure the multimeter is registering voltage at the tap. Then, press in on the door switch to simulate the door being closed and wait to see if the voltage drops off to coincide with the dome light/cargo lights going out. Once you have that, you have the right wire. You got this!

Should be a thin gauged wire if you have multiple red/pink wires.

Thanks for everything guys. I had the 2018 install guide that goes to the front but it didn’t seem like mine was turning off with the doors. I’m going to go take a look now.

I got the 12volts from the pink wire under the scuff plate! Part of the problem is that one of the fancy expensive taps I was trying was designed for a larger gauge. When I used the clamp type that come with trailer wiring kits it worked. Thanks again all. I’ll post a pic when I’m completely done!

Hey that pink wire is triggered on with the cargo light , they didn’t switch it with a ground and a relay ?? So you just tapped into the power and just found a clean spot for your ground under the outside of the truck ? Is there a good weather proof spot to get your power wire in side ?

If you have the bed rail system on your truck, I used one of those screws and everything works perfect.

To everyone who posted on this thread thank you. Finally got a chance to finish.

I did the puddle lights too, might change these to strips at some point.

I do but I’m getting a spray in bed liner on Saturday , I’m guessing it won’t ground through that figured I would just find a spot to ground my light under the bed or cab ! Still waiting for the parts to make my kit !

I used a bolt holding my steps to the frame for a solid ground. Get yourself a ring terminal to attach to the ground wire, remove one of the step bolts, lightly sandpaper around the hole, and attach the ring terminal when reinstalling the bolt. Good ground and very secure.

I’m trying to wire bed lights to the driver side wire loom under the scuff plate and tap into the cargo light wiring and I am having a hell of a time. Everything I have read says to run the wire from under the truck up through a rubber grommet that pops out at the wiring under the scuff plate. All the rubber grommets I am seeing from under the truck don’t come out where they should. Looks like they come out under the metal plate that the wire loom is connected to so I can’t access them. I have seen the OEM bed light instruction PDF that says to run them through the passenger side into the footwell then over to the driver side but everyone says they just popped them through the grommets on the driver side. I am going crazy! Anyone got any tips or pointers???

I ran into a similar issue when I did my 2015. My solution was to locate one of the pinch weld drip edge openings and enlarge it a bit with a slightly larger drill bit. I then ran a piece of wire up into the hole I enlarged and taped my power wire to the end of it, then pulled my power wire into the wire channel. The drip edge hole will come up into the bundle/wire channel. After connecting my power wire to the cargo light wire (used a PosiTap), I painted the little bit of bare metal I created when I enlarged the hole , and then sealed up around the wire with silicon.

So I ended up running them to the passenger side due to also getting a pop n lock. I got everything into the passenger scuff plate and got the pop n lock hooked up and working but can’t seem to find the wire for the cargo lights. Is there a cargo light wire on the passenger side as well? Or is it only on the driver side??

If you tap the puddle lights into the footwell light circuit they will fade in and out rather then abruptly turning off. Also illuminate when the vehicle is shut off.
