As far as launching boat or waverunners. Never let water above the bottom of you rim of your wheel, you don't want lake or seawater in your breaks or rear end. If you can't get your boat or waverunner off trailer very easy solution. Liquid rollers. Its sold at academy. It in an aerosol can. You spray on bunks. Last about 15 launches then reapply. I warn you better have your winch strap connected or your boat will be laying in the parking lot. The first 7 launches it flies off the trailer, the next 7 are pretty good then it wears off. Can is about $7. I apply when bunks are wet and it still works perfect!!!

I know this is an old post, but to reach out. I bought a 16 SR5 5.7 4X4 Tundra at the end of 2019, it had 21,500 miles on the odometer…and like clock work, cracked 70,000 miles (being absolutely babied for a 4X4 truck) and got this BS. The fix per the dealership was practically a new rear/right axle/assembly…$2500 DOLLARS!! I was beyond angry. I bought this truck before my first child was born to, in a way, prepare to build my family by having what was supposed to be a durable, reliable truck. Well…to my disappointment…have contacted Toyota to pay for this BS…may post over the next couple days to let y’all know if they give a dime or not. Also, I have pics of the work invoice if anyone is interested.

So, to anyone interested. It was allegedly a ‘metal contaminated’/‘rust contaminated’ not sure which, rear passenger axle….$2500 bucks…Toyotas response was pretty much ‘derp, screw you we’re worried about our new garbage Tundras.’ I’ll never buy another Toyota. Good luck. Obviously I kept the ‘diagnosis/bill’ if anyone would like to see it….side note, 2023 rams have a better reliability rating than the 2023 Tundras…sad.

Did you even read? Or do you just expect to be making major repairs on your vehicles at 70,000 miles? You say ‘7 year old truck’ like that’s supposed to be old or something. You do realize that there’s several 40+ year old beater pick-ups on the road right? Lol. “Something going wrong” on a “7 year old truck” should be more along the lines of MAYBE a bad starter/alternator/water pump…not sure how long you’ve been around, but I’ve been around long enough to know that this shouldn’t be a thing for a tundra that’s spent 99% of its life going down a dry highway.

Just had this fixed on my 2017 at about 87k miles. It's a rear axle seal that also ends up affecting a speed sensor. You can usually see the seep on whichever side it is. Thankfully, my truck was under warranty, however, the dealer said the cost to fix was about $1,600. I think my mechanic was under $1500 and they only use OEM parts. I keep hearing of guys getting quotes for $2500-$3500. That's insane

Any Maintenance to prevent this? Is the seep close to the wheel? This only affects rear axle?

There’s no preventative maintenance for this that I’m aware of besides for taking yours in and having them specifically look at this issue and maybe catch it early. I had no warning signs before it happened to me, as a matter of fact, about a month prior it had gone in to a Toyota dealership for a tire rotation and oil change where they said everything looked good. Toyotas just not what they used to be.

A contaminated/rusted rear axle shaft? 2500.00! Holy crap.

Or did they just replace the whole exile assembly?
