Ok Tundra members this one is going to end in a solved mystery and a full on update 100% to the end. I own a shop and I decided to buy myself something nice for now until I get my dream truck next year. I bought this from the pre owned side of Maus Nissan in New Port Richie FL. I could see it had some issues but nothing I couldnt fix. I bought the truck with 74,080 miles and drove it to my girlfriends house 45 north. Then drove it an hour and a half east to the shop consuming half a tank and the MPG monitor was not even at 10MPG. I was a bit alarmed considering its a bone stock truck.

I hide it in the shop and go to town on it ordering everything from Toyota, Denso, OEM, and TRD I could get my hands on. I changed the plugs yes OEM, cleaned the airbox and put in a TRD filter, cleaned the hell out of the throttle body, changed Diff fluid, did Klotz Fuel system cleaner, tire pressure, checked all the wheels in the air to ensure a brake caliper wasnt stuck, transmission fluid and so on. I drove it 3 more times within a 3 mile radius of my shop and was at 1/4 tank in no time. Then I said well let me leave it idling to burn off the 87 octane in the tank. Ive always felt a hesitation at take off. Much to my shock after 2.5 hrs at idle the E light came on and I was almost on empty.

I drove it around here some more to burn off as much of the last of that fuel as I could and went to Chevron for 93 and filled it to the gills. Ive driven it 2 more times close by and im already past the full line on the decline.

I finally called Keith at Dirty Deeds and his exact words when I said Im getting 6-7 MPG in my 2012 Tundra 5.7 bone stock were (((WHATTTTT???)))). He couldnt believe what I had just explained above. Well he is now involved and pointed out a few things to look for. The real shocker is when I just went to take a few pictures of the dash and realized my actual mileage from 74,080 when I left the dealership slap full of fuel a month ago to now was only 74,284!!!!

How the hell did I blow a tank and an 1/8 in 204 miles? So I am headed to Toyota tomorrow at 9:30 and I want answers. To my knowledge it is not an FFV, no CEL at all, verified CEL does in fact work, shifter is not stuck in S mode, changed diff fluid, did the ECU reset and exhaust is stock as well.

Thank you all for all of your posts that Ive been able to read for the last month and all the love ive gotten from all the menbers as a newbie! Hopefully Im in the right forum.

OK, did you hand calculate it?

Idling burns off a lot of fuel believe it or not. I typically get about 200 miles to the tank with my short trips to work I’ll city driving. And calculated I get between 9.5 and 10.5 MPG average. Out on the highway it’s a different story. Get between 15 and 18 depending on how fast, how much gear I have, Road conditions etc.

I did not hand calculate it. Im too busy watching the needle plunge just starting it. I have to definitely get a larger aftermarket tank. I got better gas mileage on my 1983 Dodge Ram Prospector 4x4 all hopped up...lol

Full tank for 200 miles does seem high. Anything else in that truck that isn't stock?

    Vacuum leak?

Valid point! I am going to start looking for a vacuum leak because I think there was something living in the engine bay. I found the windsheild wiper hose chewed 4 inches long under the passenger side hood hinge. I suspect this truck sat for a long time with a bad battery after Hurricane Irma or something.

She weighs 10,000 loaded down. My Tundra is a 2WD and no way in hell would I trust it at a deep incline ramp at low tide. I am doing the Auburn Pro LSD on it for my other boating fun.

Had the same issue with a H2. Found out it was from rusted out fuel lines and fuel leaking no from them. The lines would only leak when the vehicle was running due to the pressure however. My thought would be fuel line leak.

In one of your pictures, it looks like the tranny temp is up close to normal, but the engine temp looks cold. Check the 'stat?

Still, picture was taken with tranny still warm. Seems engine would still be near normal operating temp. Does the engine temp gauge read below center needle when warmed up?

And on second look the engine WAS running. Idle RPM on the tach.

Is it a Flexible Fuel model?

If so, there is a known problem (and fix) where it burns richer on gasoline, thinking its E85. Usually manifests itself being hard to start, cranking for a long time before finally starting. Do a search on: tundra flex fuel cold start problems
