Being a huge fan of RCSB (Regular Cab Short Bed) Tundras, I have been thinking for a while of a way to determine a close estimate at actual production numbers from Toyota. Everyone always wants to have the rarest of the rare when it comes to vehicles but how can it be "rare" if you don't know how many exist in the world. After several weeks and a lot of thinking I have come up with a clever solution.

We all know each vehicle has a VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to uniquely mark and identify each. I knew that if I could get a list of Tundra VINs I could sort them to see specifics for each year, body style, ect and a total count of valid VINs would give production numbers. However no such database of VINs just on the internet exist.

So I reverse engineered all the VINs for RCSB Tundra's both 4X2 and 4X4. I only focused on 2007-2013 trucks with the 5.7L V8. The image below is a quick overview of the format and decoding of a VIN.
    upload_2022-8-19_20-43-1.jpg

Knowing the last 6 of the VIN are the unique serial number, I just assumed every serial number 000000-999999 was a RCSB Tundra and created a VIN to represent each if it was a 4X2 and 4X4. Now I had a huge list of engineered VINs that contained all real existing trucks and then some. To validate the data and remove "fake" VINs, I ran the entire database through an API to check each VINs record history. (Think running a CarFax only every VIN).

I quickly found out serial numbers increment up uniformly which really helped (I had assumed this but you never know). This means I just had to establish the first and last valid serial number for each year model. Almost every valid serial number returned between 10-60 records associated with that VIN. These are records of oil changes, inspections, title changes, IE proof this is a real vehicle being driven in the world. VINs that returned 0 records are not valid and don't represent an actual truck that exist. I did find a handful of VINs with only 1 records which I assume is Toyota issuing a title and never selling them or something.

Anyway here are the results. You will see in 2010 Toyota quit making 4X2 5.7L trucks. Overall many more 4x4 trucks made than 4X2. Still a pretty limited amount compared to all Tundra body's/styles.

Just some cool info I thought I would share for those interested. I am not 100% guaranteeing these numbers are exact, but they are close and will give a good idea. All you regular cab 5.7 guys post your VIN here or at least check to make sure it falls in the right range. I have checked several trucks posted online for sale and every VIN lines up with my table so far.

My truck is #001246 4X4 so I think that makes it the 113th one produced of the 5,063

Side note: this was not easy to pull off, I don't think it would be possible to create and filter a database for double cab or crewmax Tundra's as it would be much much larger.

    That is really cool.

In addition to my Tundra, I also own a Tacoma X-Runner. It is another limited production truck that Toyota is pretty tight lipped about in terms of sales numbers.
The common thought is that they made 3000 a year from 05 to 12 with limited (unknown amount) production in 12-13 for Hawaii and Puerto Rico. I have access to consumer auto data (wife's business is data) and found a total of only 3,100 unique records for the model designation.

Is there any way to confirm how many of the 5063 2007-13 RCSB 4x4’s were ordered with the TRD Off Road package ?

Unfortunately no, the Vin only declares the trim level of which all regular cabs are basically the same. It doesn’t go into depth listing which packages were installed.

The only way to check that it to run each vin through the Toyota Vin decoder to see add on packages. Last I checked Toyota doesn’t allow batch decoding so it would have to be done one Vin at a time.

#1178 here with a 4X2, I guess that makes it the 56th RCSB.

Thanks for doing this. Thought my 07 RCSB 2wd 5.7 was rare.
