The 05-06 tundra vvti kinda has that feel to it. It makes nuts power in the high rpm, but low end feels a little sluggish. I remember it was horrendous once i put heavy tall tires on my 05.

did your 03 v6 have a real throttle cable? If so, that will feel way more responsive than the drive by wire with the vvti.

heck, even the pre-vvti 4.7 trucks felt more responsive

The early gen (with throttle cable) in optimized condition with the 12 holes injectors:

    1) Solid low/mid end torque.

    2) Transmission and engine feel as one (Sync’d) with the pedal push at low/mid speed. No lazy shifts/downshifts.

    3) Jumpy off the line. Been dusting other trucks especially goofy Bearded Roof Tent Truck Guys, but thats easy.

    * Truck used to be lazy and larded out before bring her back in suspension (tired front end) and new OEM engine parts (air, fuel, spark). Only engine part that is not exact spec (but is still Denso) are the 12 holes.

    * Throttle Cable is tight as it can get without a effecting idle. It is also shimmed/clamped so it doesn’t slip in the manifold bracket.

I’m ready to dust any vvti now.

1 of these days I will troll the streets of St Barts and my vvti is gonna put your grandma mobile to shame

    @Hbjeff
I had an 01 lifted on 35's and 4.56 gears and I presently have the 05. I can tell you that neither version of this engine is a slouch by any stretch. Pre-vvti had a more linear power delivery and can haul ass. Once I got the vvti engine running back up to par, it jumps off the line and lights up the tires and I'm on 275/55 20, if I had the stock tires she would go sideways. It's no high hp sports car but the torque is very evident off the line.

Just make sure your tank is close to empty so you can break off the line enough to stay out of the dust... and turn your engine off on the prior fill up to keep the ‘bogg’ away.

I'll be sure to do that and I'll pick up a sofa just to make it fair

A few random thoughts and questions PHM.
Have you done the coolant bypass mod?

The stock airbox is pretty solid, can't say that any of the aftermarket units make any power increase. So I have been looking at it and I'm thinking about replacing the plastic tube between the airbox and throttle body with something similar to the K&N intake. Next would be to get some dryer hose and ram air the box as best I can. What you think?

Thats all new territory to me on the Ram Air, so I have no idea.

I have not done the TB coolant by-pass. I don’t think its worth the .0124% gain in hot weather yet still risk cold weather poor performance. Toyota designed that TB to be heated for a reason is how I look at it.

Extremely serious that its in the manual. Its also bad for the environment as you are burning unnecessary gas while getting gas which is another violation. The Nutter Patrol is another organization to which you’ll be reported.[/QUOTE]

If a person was truly worried about damaging the environment, I don't think they would drive a 1st gen that averages 12-13mpg.

I actually tried to fill up with the engine running today just to see if I died. I got out of the truck and remembered I needed the key to unlock the fuel door.

I live to die another day.

It was a joke and I agree with you. On a side note, Its actually better to maintain an older vehicle than continually buy new ones regardless of mpg.

My Sister was a 'House Supervisor' at a hospital in Alaska . . . they paid an employee to re-fill some of the cars/trucks 24/7 to keep them running for 3 months in the dead of winter . . . true story.
