My 2002 Tundra has over 244,000 miles on it; I've replaced all spark plugs, all ignition coils, timing belt and water pump, cam sensor, but it runs fine, then all of a sudden it will start skipping like it's running on 7 cylinders. If I pull over and shut it off, wait 30 seconds, start it and it will run fine for a short time, then do it again. Sometimes I can run 10-15 miles before it does it again. It's driving me crazy, what is it? Help!

Try new fuel filter and new injectors and/or new fuel pump?

Only time my truck felt like it was running on 7 cylinders was when a coil pack went bad. Looks like you’ve done all 8 with new. Now maybe its fuel related?

If it was fuel filter, this would happen all the time. Don't think it's fuel related. Thanks tho.

Did you replace all of the ignition coils at one time? Also if you did not use OEM coils that may be the problem as well. Had the same issue on my daughters 99 Maxima. Found out that if you replace a coil that you should replace them all and only use OEM coils. So after I replaced the other five coils it ran perfect even though I only showed a code for the one I replaced....

    Ron,

Thanks for the information. What are OEM coils? Why would that matter?

    Erik,

If it were the ignition coils, it would happen all the time. So what do you think?

Brian I'm honestly not sure. Some things are best left diagnosed by actual mechanics. I'm just saying that from what I've read the inexpensive coils are not a good idea. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Fuel system related? My guess again.

244k miles is a long time on the fuel pump. When was last time fuel filter was replaced? Injectors probs have some gunk if filter is old.

Honestly I have no idea. That’s what my mechanic told me. I was having the same sort of issues. This was on my daughters 99 Maxima. Went to autozone ran a diagnostic and found a faulty coil. So I replaced the coil with the cheapest coil Autozone had. Still had issues so took it to my trusted mechanic and he advised that whenever you replace a coil that you should replace them all and to use ONLY OEM. I trust this guy because he knew I was going to do the work myself before telling me this. So I purchased 6 new OEM coils and it solved the problem. It’s amazing how much better it runs. Good Luck and let us know what you find is the solution.
