I have a 2000 4x4 that isn’t engaging. One theory was transfer case. Another was, simply a bad switch (push button) in dash. It does have 426k on it! Haven’t dug into it yet, just looking to see what everyone else has run into. Would like to get it working to eventually sell to be someone’s project vehicle. Needs some tlc. Thanks in. Advance for any suggestions!

Shifty pointed you towards some good resources. Most common issue is corroded actuators. One on the TC and one on the FD. They get moisture in them over time and the contact runs corrode and fail to actuate the motors. Some can be salvaged with cleaning, some need replacement.

Oooh and replacement is a burden on the wallet, man...

Especially if that's the 1st place you go to, throwing parts at the problem without digging, only to find ... the one actuator you spent an arm on, and the other actuator you spent a leg on ... neither was the problem. (Seen it here plenty)

And a finicky procedure. Gotta match the actuator mode to the transfer case or differential position.
