Major life altering decision to make here  I am looking at nerf bars with side hoops, and the question is would you go for the odd 3rd hoop for better bed access or are you vain like me and cant stand how they look?

I might not be able to sleep tonight pondering this, so input is needed.

Why would you buy nerf bars to begin with?

Rust magnets with 50% less usable step than a typical running boards with the side benefit of bending into your body on the slightest impact.

I laugh when I see trucks with them. Faux-sliders.

Well.... rust was a concern, but I think I found a company that makes a tough enough finish. Running boards are a no way Jose', so the faux sliders (and that is what they will be as this truck will not see that kind of wheeling) it is. And the wife needs to be able to climb in our new truck, and she is old hat at driving trucks and vans. But thanks for your insight.

that is the underlying decision to make as of yet, even so with a toolbox the 3 stepper is maybe too fugly. I am pondering a recessed toolbox with a removable tonneau cover, which would render the 3 hooper useless.

Go with 2. If you're reaching into the bed over the bed rail, you have a chance of scratching the paint. Whether it's you or a friend with a belt buckle. Depends on how much you like your paint versus how much you reach into the bed that much IMO.

I always liked the 6-hoops, but this is by far the best argument I've read that goes against the 6-hoops.

I liked 3. Made it easier to access the bed or climb on the rear tire for even more access to the bed. You do lose some clearance with steps vs boards, but not an issue if you don’t wheel high rated trails. And they don’t look bad. Good luck.

This truck will never see rough stuff. I was actually thinking about getting a first gen Tundra to build into a wheeler.
