I can get 21 mpg on the highway, I did it for years, just set the cruise control to 65 and go. Of course you are going to get run over these days in So Cal. Now I get about 19 because I run 10/30 oil now, I have 288k on my motor and need the added lubrication.

Yeah! It's hard not to get into a road rage situation when obeying speed limits here.

I have my Tundra figured out, if you really want to get better at saving gas buy a Scangauge 2 and start watching it. That's how I did it. Now I'm trying to figure out how to save gas in my wifes Honda Element. I spend some time in their forums and see claims of easy 28mpg, my beat to date is 23mpg. So to avoid wind defeat when your car is shaped like a shoebox.

I ran the 5/30 as Toyota recommends for 200k, however now with the age of my engine, the 5 weight oil can get past the worn seals and rings and burn away.

Darkness, I have 2 thoughts to help improve your mileage.

1 Keep the Element clean and waxed, it will improve how the vehicle cuts drag.
2 Draft the vehicle in front of you on the highway, lol.

I hate doing this because it wears the tires out in the middle to soon, but keep the tire pressure at the max recommended pressure, it really reduces road friction and will increase your mileage.

I prefer better ride characteristics, so I keep my tire pressure 32 psi front and 28 psi rear.

I drove my dad's tundra for a few days while my car was at the body shop and I averaged 15 MPG with mostly highway miles. O2 sensors are bad though.

To be fair, it was in below 0 temps, with bad upper ball joints, flat spotted tires, bad o2 sensors, a bad APPS, and the first tank of gas after not being driven for 3 months while the frame was being sent.
And it was predominant city driving.

This time of year with the shitty winter blend fuels and long idle times for warming up, I'm averaging anywhere between 12 and 13 mpg. In the summer I was getting 13-15 mpg.

    Like modifications?

I haven’t done anything. Previous owner put a grille guard, cab visor, and a 2 inch lift on it.

No sorry. I meant have you done anything to the truck yet that may help. Plugs, PCV, air filter, MAF cleaning etc.

9-12 city here. 16-18 on highway. No worries here. Those are close to the original posted on the sticker when bought new (14/17). I think about all the money I saved by NOT HAVING A POS TRUCK that breaks down all the time. This truck has never let me down.

Well with it being from -2 to -8 this week every morning and idling for 5 minutes or so I’ve calculated a gagging 11 mpg

Trucks currently parked with about a 5’ snow drift against it in a blizzard so tomorrow’s idle time will probably hurt even more.

I voted 17 hwy, as thats what I can manage on a flat highway with the cruise set at 110km/h in warm weather.

Right now I'm probaby averaging about 12mpg combined thanks to -30C and colder temps, remote starting, running in 4wd etc.

I'm honestly past the point where I really pay attention. Now I just throw gas in when she's thirsty. We drive The Woman's car for economy and my Tundra for more important stuff like camping and fishing.

My truck is 4x4 with 275/70/17, and with 89 octane, combining city & hwy, it takes 12 mpg. And with 91, it takes 13 mpg. For a full tank, I save $3 with 91 octane.

I have a 2003 4x4 TRD, 265/70R17, BFG KO2s, a shell and roof rack, and am getting about 13MPG HWY. I even replaced 1 cat and all O2 sensors in the thought that the ECU was having a hard time adjusting the mixture because my O2 sensors were not working efficiently. Briefly, the efficiency went up to about 15 MPG, but now back down to 13 last few tanks. :(

Well, a few more tanks of gas in and I’m still getting 11.5 mpg. What the heck... brand new tires and a fresh alignment too...

Looking at your other post it seems the PCV is still on your "to do" list. That was my suggestion. After I replaced mine last month I've seen nearly a full MPG difference. 15.6 on a mix of city/highway today when I filled up.
11.5 seems really low honestly. Sorry if I already asked but have you already done the spark plugs?

I have not done spark plugs yet. I’ll add that to the list along with the PCV valve.

Yes, but just for O2 sensors. That alone won’t cause me to get 11 though.

Clocked 15.5 on half a tank 'country road' driving with a new set of stiffer tires, just did a big tune-up since that calc with new plugs, fuel filter, air filter, MAF clean, timing belt and an exhaust fix so we'll see where that puts me on the next run here. Didn't realize PCV could be a big factor--that's the one thing I didn't swap yet :\
