I wish I could remember which it was, but pretty sure with one of my early 90s Civics, to change one of the belts I had to pop off one of the front engine mounts. I'm pretty sure it was one of my Civics and not on the VR6. I've had a lot of cars, wrenched on a lot of cars and that was too many decades ago.

My Mountain MTNRM6 wrench set would've probably been ideal for that situation. I also prefer using sockets that have a box-wrench provision on them, as many of my deep wells do. Like this:

    upload_2022-3-21_9-54-32.jpg

I have a stack of 256GB SSD (2.5") if that's what your laptop takes.
If you ping me your laptop model # I can look up max RAM and what speed of DDR3 it takes, I may have an 8GB or 16GB kit on-hand, spare.

I'm not shitting you. I have a shitload of technology at-hand.

Depending on age, it's highly possible the chipset on his mainboard only accepts max of 8GB. That wasn't an uncommon config 4-6 years ago for consumer-grade, as stupid as it sounds. I'd be shocked if his laptop supports 32GB.

Windows may suck, but it's cheap and easy to use and widely supported. Google Chrome is more of a hog than Windows, honestly.

This reminds me, the big motorcycle helmet manufacturers will have new models that they release every year(?). Some of our motorcycle parts/ apparel shops will mark down their existing inventory heavily to make room for the next year's model. My dad got a Bell helmet close to cost that way.

Back in the day I owned an aerostitch suit. Used to use it for my commute and to get home from track practice (running). It was super comfortable and versatile, well insulated but also breathable and forced full body protection. I haven’t crashed yet so not sure how good it is for that.

The dumb thing was I stopped wearing boots because that meant two sets of shoes. So I was in my lightweight racing shoes for the track workout. Meanwhile all the rest of me was well protected. I’d probably suck up the extra weight now that I’m older and less dumb.

A magnetic tank bag is a great thing to have. Medium sized to fit all your regular stuff. Nice to have it off your back.

Don’t commute with a laptop without multiple layers of water protection. I blew up one laptop getting caught in the rain. Oops.

Won't be an option for him since he's getting a dual sport. Much more plastic than metal on these bikes including the tanks. He can get a tool bag that wraps around his front fender, or a rack that goes on his rear fender.

Plastic tank sounds cheaper to replace if damaged. I’ve only ever ridden metal tank bikes. Guess I need to get dirty more.

I imagine a steel gas tank would dent super easy when you lay down the bike, especially on a rock. I haven't experienced any failures on my plastic tanks yet even after dropping them, so it's not something I really think about.

A lot of guys change the stock tanks out for even bigger tanks that can hold closer to 5 gallons. Those are heavier and cause your knees to stick out further. The stock tank on my bike will easily do over 100 miles if I'm not constantly running high RPMs, so I've never considered one.

I ran out of gas on my old 450 on the highway once, that was a fun time.

Before the split, my bro in law’s gf ran out on the way to town. Hitched back. So the two of them got on the little “pit bike” to get a gallon of gas to it, that thing barely moves one person. Like a clown show. And the best part is she took the big bike to town and back and didn’t fill the tank. I drove it next and I was so scared about running out myself. Trying to find gas on a motorcycle in an unfamiliar town can be a bit stressful.

I'm still learning towards the Honda CRF300L Rally or the Kawasaki KLX300. Both are difficult to find right now from what everyone says. The Kawasaki is supposedly better in most metrics but I much prefer the styling of the Honda.

    https://powersports.honda.com/off-road/dual-sport/crf300l-rally-crf250l-rally

    https://www.kawasaki.com/en-us/motorcycle/klx/dual-sport/klx300

@des2mtn you mentioned loving KTM. Why can't I find many street legal dual sport bikes on their website? The only one around 300cc I see is a whopping $12k MSRP for the 350 EXC-F. Hard for me to justify spending that much.

The 390 Adventure looks interesting though.

Have you looked into a 10-25 year old Husq TE310 or FE350, maybe a Suzuki DR-Z400SE or DR-350SE?

Those were on my list when I was looking, just before the kids got here. Even back then they were under $5k (some at half that today) and were just as rideable as the ones you listed. Besides, chances are you'll drop the bike at least once or twice in your first couple of years, might as well get something capable but not too-too nice first.

It depends, they make bikes for markets all over the world. For example they don't have a street legal 250 or street legal 2-strokes in the states. They're a Euro manufacturer.

But the 350 and 500 EXC-F are pretty much their two dual sport bikes in the states, it's better to think of these as dirt bikes with license plates that have some street capability.

They also have Enduro/ adventure bikes (390, 690, 1190) that are street legal, it's better to think of these as street bikes with dirt capability. Don't mistake this at all for me saying they have no place in the dirt though.

If you're open to KTM though, don't be afraid of the used market. The 350 EXC-F model with fuel injection goes back to 2012 if I remember right.

Yep, Huskys are good bikes too. The old school Huskys (70's and 80's) are different from the modern ones. I'm not as up-to-date on Husky's ownership now, but they were owned by BMW motorcycles for awhile and then KTM.

The TE310 is the EXC350's sibling and the TE510 is the EXC500's sibling kinda.

1.8t requires the removal of the offside engine mount to change the tbelt.
Once you've done a few, you can knock it out in under 90 minutes with the water pump change. Tstat adds another 1/2 hour.

Ive been running iMacs for years. I got a free one recently because Best Buy broke a screen to replace the fusion drive and the screen was no longer available. That worked out nicely. But it's good to note that the the smaller ones (at the time anyway) could only go to 16G, the 27 inch ibe user expandable to 128G. I run 64G aftermarket memory.

My friend just drove his GX470 to OK to see family and while they were there his wife took it out to run around town. She called to say it wouldn't run. He got there and the radiator cap had blown off and shot coolant everywhere. It would start but not move and sounded horrible apparently.

He had it towed to the Toyota dealership. They called him back and said the engine was toast. It had no compression.

He and I have been trying to figure out what may have happened. He said it still had coolant in the overflow res. I was thinking maybe the cap failed, it dumped most of the coolant and then overheated until it seized up? It had less than 200k miles I think. Pretty sure he had just paid a Toyota dealer in TN to do the timing belt job also. Edit- wrong about this, it was last year when he did the timing belt.

He ended up selling it on Facebook for $2k since he was 12 hours from home.

Thats what happened to moms sequoia back in 2010 or so. Cracked the radiator bottom tank and drove it until the engine seized. Engine swap ended up being about $8k i think.

That's what I was thinking, 90s era TE310. Thats what I was hunting for at least, two different dudes in my n'hood are former moto guys who ride dual-sport. Knowing my budget, that was their under-$5k "look out for one of these" suggestion. I can only assume prices are half now what they were then, but who knows.

Only thing I'll say, and this is from someone that has been using Linux professionally since '98 when Redhat 5 was their high-end and Slackware was king (IMO), dabbled in AIX and Tru64 for IBM & Compaq, and spent 15 years supporting enterprise users trying to use their Macs in a Windows workplace alongside a fleet of Windows boxes ... MacOS isn't for everyone, and neither is Linux.

I've learned the hard way you can't take a lifelong PC user and pull the Windows out from under them. Migrating to MacOS is usually confusing as hell, the process to do simple tasks are wildly different (via simplicity, though, which can be nice). If they're iPhone users, at least there's some familiarity that carries over, but it's not nearly the same.

Dumping them into some alternate BSD-based OS doesn't work either, same way blindly into Linux or similar won't. While the look and feel is similar to Windows, all the shit that tends to break when doing updates in Linux -- like, how fluid releases can be with adding/removing apps, and the need for occasional CLI repair, and the lack of abundant official support for apps, instead relying on open-source or flea-market-quality cobbled software -- I've seen it drive people to reinstall Windows. It takes determination and willingness to change.

Deepin tried to bridge that gap when it came out, but most folks I know wouldn't trust it because it came out of China, no doubt PRC definitely has their hands deep in it. (Deep... In...)

A friend of ours her 20's just took $25k out of her 401k to help her fiance buy a truck because the market is down. So not only is she robbing her future self, she will have to pay a $2,500 penalty and she will have to pay around $5,000 in taxes next year when she files. What a horrible decision.

I've come to the conclusion (especially in my area) that cars are a disposal item. If I can get 7-10 years out of them without spending a huge amount at inspection every year I'm happy.

Durango is on year 7, Tundra is on year 5. I don't think I've spent more than $1k each year on either.

2020 was real shitty for a lot of people but we came through in great shape and the only debt we currently have is our mortgage and her student loans. I'm looking at a new car but I'm not in any hurry to but and I'm not spending more than $35k, preferably $30k.

My only vices are restaurants and travel, but those are budgeted for.

For what I'm looking for it doesn't make any sense to shop used in this market when it's like $3k more for brand new.

If I wasn't driving 50 miles round trip a day I'd be fine with older also, hell if it was closer I'd bike
