@FirstGenVol does that count for a DMV license too or do you have to do that separately?

DMV test here consists of driving to dunkin donuts and getting the instructor a coffee. Should be easy peasy. Like how can you fail at parallel parking when you're using your feet?

For fun I was looking at offroad camp trailers today. Saw a couple pretty cool ones - including one for 30K :tumbleweed:

Yeah - that is pretty serious. Craigslist has some interesting stuff. This place seems to have great value trailers.

This is all I need. I'll take the certificate to the DMV and they will add the motorcycle endorsement to my license. I'll upgrade to the "real ID" while I'm there.

This also gets me a discount on motorcycle insurance per state law.

Yes but I need some time. I don't even own a helmet yet or any gear.

Helmet suggestions? Apparently my certificate gets me a one time 10% discount at the local Cycle Gear so I may go get fitted for a helmet there.

I see they make dual sport helmets but I'm not clear what makes them different than any other. @des2mtn probably knows.

Go in and try a few on. You gotta get your head shape figured out to get the right kind. I'd look to spend around $300 or so on a decent helmet. The $100 on gloves, $200 on a jacket, $200 on boots.

You can also look at revzilla for a bigger selection and maybe better prices. We don't have a cycle world here so that's where I got all my stuff.

Since you have a cycle world, I'm assuming you have bigger motorcycle dealerships there too. You can go and sit on a few different kinds and see what fits you best.

You have anything in particular you like?

Just don’t cheap out on a helmet. It’s worth the money to get a good one, arai, shoei…because they fit better and are lighter which equals less head fatigue when riding on the freeway or windy days or at speed. and it depends on your head shape. So some brands will fit better just cause they use an oval shape va a round shape. You’ll see but try a few on in all prices

My main helmet I use is a 6D which is like an $800 helmet. Sometimes Cycle Gear runs deals where if you buy a helmet you can get a riding jersey or something similar free.

I agree with the other two, don't cheap out on a helmet and try many different ones on. One brand's large may be another brand's medium. Bell, Shoei and 6D are good brands. Double check the helmet has a DOT sticker on the back, most all of them should.

There's a couple different types of helmets - this is a full face which I would only recommend if you're doing street riding. If you use this to dual sport, you will have dust getting in your eyes if you have the shield open. There are some riding glasses that have rubber to seat against your eyes which can help. If you have the shield closed while riding on the dirt, your head will start to get hot and sweat.

This is a modified motocross with a shield. I haven't experimented with this type but it looks like it allows better airflow. One thing about a shield vs goggles - goggle lenses are cheap and disposable if they get scratched when you clean them. Helm I can imagine in my case the shield would cause my head to cook from lack of airflow.

Here's a full motocross helmet which I use. Since you're talking about wanting to take your bike on trails like you do your truck, I'd probably look at these if I were you to be honest. I have a few different pairs of goggles I use with this type of helmet - dark lens, amber lens, and clear lens. If I want to ride a long time on the street, I also have a pair of riding glasses with the rubber that seats against your eyes. Even with this type of helmet your head will likely get warm and sweat, some helmets have vents on the top you can open to let more air in.

Lastly, if you're an idiot and want to make it easier for them to clean up your brain when you crash and die, you can get one of these.

Yeah, a good helmet won't be cheap. I have a modular, and it's OK. It was discontinued so I got a decent price on it. I have found a Shoei modular I wanna get. Modulars will have more wind noise than a full helmet.

The size thing is true in all gear. I wear a 2xl on my Alpinestars jacket, and it fits snug. And don't forget your armor inserts for your jacket!

Now that you're sufficiently overwhelmed with info, take a minute, digest, and try shit out. Look online to see what you like then go see if cycle place has it to try on.

As for beginner bikes: start small. Don't go out and buy a $10k-$15k bike just to drop it your 1st day out. I picked up that 16 ninja 650 for $5k last year, but never dropped it or layer it down. If I had, no big loss. It's a beginner bike.

My bro in law bought a desert sled last night mid horse haul. I’m not with him. So I am also shopping for another helmet now. We would use it for transportation to/from the horse venues and I might even take it from Palm Desert back home if I were helping haul. Or from the show near their sister’s house back to hers.

I do have a white Shoei which fits great as my OG helmet from 30 years ago. That one stays in the desert. It might be nice to have a mc helmet for airflow. I was thinking of maybe getting new goggles for snowboarding anyway after this last trip.

But I think I do mostly prefer the fully enclosed street helmet. Then again it’s been a long time since I’ve ridden in heat for a longer trip.
