Let’s be honest…all you ‘non DC’ guys are just jealous.
    It’s ok.
You are welcome and accepted as the 80% trucks you are.
Admitting it is the first step towards recovery. :D

You best watch your mouth. Gotta be a little wild to love the AC for what it is. Those marshmallow truck guys are a little easier. More compliant. We might not have a whole 8’, but we werent robbed of 6”.

Mine does the same. What filter do you use @Tundra2 ? Also, that steering rack I was going to give you is a no go. The tube is too corroded and thin in a couple of spots. Now might also be a good time to admit I had to take a cutoff wheel to the steering shaft to get it apart. Still couldn't get It out of the joint, so had to weld a bolt to it and run a nut up on some pipe to pull it out. Insanity.

Clock in. 5:15pm. Clock out. 7:07am

Had an outside transformer literally melt itself yesterday. Work contracted out the job to replace it. Company hooked the legs up backwards so 1/3 of the plants motors were spinning backwards.

They finished up about an hour before I clocked in, and dayshift maintenance was just getting everything going on my arrival. They figured out that erry-thang was plum ass backwards .

I got to help the lead electrical engineer swap the big legs around. Even though we had everything locked out... you still couldn't drive a brad nail in my ass with a 10lb sledge.

Working on something that steps 13,000VAC down to 3 phase 480 is not something I'm 100% confident doing. Lol

Private as far as I know. Hell naw they didn't check it. The fucking manager couldn't figure out why the hydraulic pumps weren't building pressure.

Simple enough ti check. Stick a small zip tie tail in the fan and see which way it goes.

Early trip to drop the kids at practice this am. That noise was killing me. So before work I pulled the middle skid plate. Noise gone. At least I'm 100% sure what I'm dealing with.

I wouldn't mind having an old cruising bike with ape hangers. Nothing outrageous though. Just something comfortable for a weekend cruise that doesn't look retarded.

Once upon a time in a former life (Pre-City living) I was a motorcycle FANATIC (planning on getting back into them this spring with a DS myself now that we are out of the city)...my general motorcycle knowledge is great, my specific motorcycle knowledge on models 10 years old or newer is iffy....what are you hoping to do with the bike and what do you realistically expect you will do with it? :D

    Dad has a ‘93 xr650l. Carb’d goodness.
My brother has a new crf450l.
    AB319E95-4F73-4DFD-BAE0-AB81113F6CCD.jpg

The 650 is a real thumper, the 450 is more like a sewing machine. 650 is good for 70, but happiest under 60 (but its almost 30 years old), the 450 is good for 85, but its buzzing over 60.

if you’ve gotta get up to highway speeds i wouldnt go smaller than a 450, but the 650 has the low end to make trail riding more fun. Kinda gotta keep the 450 spinning, its NOT like a 450cc race bike, kinda a dog under 5krpm.

niether one of em have a kick starter, and thats a requirement for me. I’d have a kickstart on the buells if one would fit.

Dual sport is pretty much a street legal dirt bike. Not all dual sports are street legal dual sports from the factory, however. Not all dual sports can be registered in other states. What bikes are you looking and have you ridden dirt before? If you're newer to riding you can find a street legal WR250F (NOT 250R) or CRF250 that would be a good one to learn and get comfortable on before moving up to bigger bikes. I road a 250 in the dirt before moving up to a 450.

Where you are, you might have more choices on what bikes can become dual sports. There are companies that retrofit kits for dirt bikes to add blinkers, horns, etc. In California, it's quite difficult to retrofit a dirt bike into a dual sport unless it's a pre-2002.

I'm very biased towards KTM since I've owned two over the last 8 years. They're expensive to maintain, but in terms of dual sports they're in their own class since they're more of a race bike. In California they're one of the only true street legal dirt bike - the competitors are street bikes with off road capability.

My 500 currently has 7000 miles on it and less than 1,000 is on pavement. Never been on a freeway, just highway. This sucker weighs only 250 pounds so it's scary with wind drafts from oncoming traffic.

What I would like to do is take it on the same roads I take my truck. I've seen other guys riding dual-sports on those roads and it looks way more fun than my truck. I'd have to get a trailer becuase I wouldn't want to ride there. Or I'd ditch my camper shell occasionally unless the bike could be laid on it's side(I'm guessing not). I'm sure I would also ride it some around the backroads close to my house.

    upload_2022-2-10_14-38-39.jpg

I know almost nothing about bikes and just started looking. I've only been on a dirt bike once and it didn't have a clutch. I would probably take a motorcycle class at the local community college. I grew up on ATV's but I know that's not the same. I have no brand prefernce. I would be cool if I could find an old one for $1,500-2000. I wouldn't mind having to work on one either.

This one caught my eye but it's more than I want to spend right now.

So given this information I would rule out a 450 off the bat personally, some may disagree but it might help you stay out of trouble as you learn. There's nothing wrong with a 250 or smaller for what you're trying to do. Another piece of advice I have is to have the mentality that it's not "if" you are going to fall/ crash, but "when" you are going to.

Highly recommend. I already knew how to ride but I did this anyways. There was a course at my local community college that exempted you from having to do a riding test at the DMV for your full license. At the end they gave us a 20% off parts coupon at the local bike shop (pro-tip, buy a fancy helmet with that and the course pays for itself). I think it's called the Motorcycle Safety Foundation that runs those courses.

Big no-no especially if the bike is carbeurated which most older bikes are. You never want a keep a bike on it's side longer than it needs to be. You can get a rack (joe hauler) that goes in the hitch receiver.

My favorite bike of all time was an early 90’s xr100 i had in my early 20’s bought it for $100 and just needed fresh gas. Kinda like the pitbikes they have now, but it had a clutch. Rode that little basterd everywhere. Wasnt street legal, didnt care.

    Get a motorcycle hitch carrier...

    https://www.motorcycle.com/products/best-motorcycle-hitch-carriers

Based on you being a beginner here are my thoughts.

    1. If you like it, you will want to upgrade...so planning on going cheap for your first DS is a great idea...:)

    2. Look for a250, nothing bigger than a 450. Smaller = lighter = better to learn on. Very easy to learn on and plenty of power for those roads you take your truck on.

    3. DEFINITELY take the motorcycle course.

    4. Buy the right gear. I'd look for used stuff on FB or Craigslist until you decide it's really for you...then you will want to spend several $K on quality gear.

That is the basics covered. :)

Growing up my friend had a honda 80 and even for a "underpowered" bike it was amazing what we did with that thing. 150-200 is still a very powerful bike and if you're cruising trails, it's probably more than enough. Depending on the bike 250+ can be pretty tall.

My friend had a Yamaha TW200 which is basically a fat tired hunting bike and a wr250, both were awesome in their own way.
