I suppose a little bit of both.
As often as this group is a bunch of retrievers and a squirrel runs by, we can latch onto something and really beat it to death.

Just as likely as you are to convince us that 3 = 4.
    Facts aren't subject to opinion.

I feel like either your life is super interesting or I keep missing major segues.
IDK how I missed that you're involved in horses. (my mom and baby sister show Arabians)

I've been saying this for years and people think I'm out of my fucking mind.
I may be out of my mind, but not for this reason.
Lane assist should be called 'text assist' or 'facebook assist'. All of the forward-driving aids just make it easier to do anything except drive the 2-3 tons of metal and plastic you're flying down the freeway.
Unpopular opinion: Driving should be more dangerous. Then people would respect it more. Higher speedlimits, fewer nannies built into cars. If you question the safety of the freeway before you get on it, you'll respect it more while you're on it.
If you want an example, consider a classic sports car or a motorcycle. Everytime they get on the road, they're taking their lives into their own hands. Heads on swivels, speed kept in check by their own assessment of risk. There is no ABS, no traction control, no collision avoidance, etc. You're responsible for surviving the trip, not the engineers that designed your car to be idiot-proof.
    [/rant]

    Good morning!
Glad to have you back, Bubba and Speedtre.

I was looking at motorcycles on Sunday. Many seem to have ABS? I think my VFR 750 had it too, back in 2000? But maybe it was just a front to rear link? I forget.

I will not disagree with the sentiment but when it comes to rear facing aids I’m big on them. Reversing is f’ing hard with a semi truck and long trailer. I very much want to improve my skills. But I don’t want to hurt anyone or damage property while gaining those skills. To me it’s a matter of how best to learn, not unlike a bicycle. In my childhood we used training wheels. My kids both learned on striders.

For the Tundra and Tacoma, the backup cam is so helpful for me to avoid hurting a small child or animal. I don’t want to run over anyone’s pet. That would be horrible.

I also like lane assist. If done right it’s an aid. And I like BSM. I don’t think they are excessively nanny ish. The one I dislike is collision detection. It falses on the minivan and stresses me out.

As to the horse thing, my wife’s brother has a farm, he is a damn good rider, dressage I believe? The one where you race the clock and jump over shoulder high obstacles in numbered order. Anyway, he hauls his own horses to the shows. One big show is in Thermal, CA which is 30 minutes from the dad’s vacation home in Palm Desert so he goes there a lot. His farm is in Snohomish near Seattle. Another trainer is in Kirkland and he hauls for her to offset his costs and sometimes just to make supplemental cash off his CDL.

His gf used to be the second driver but they recently split and she never had a CDL anyway because she is a Canadian citizen so she can’t get one? Not sure on the details.

I got my CLP (cdl permit) about 6 months ago and I’ve tried to help with as many of the hauls as my wife will let me (she is stuck with both kids while I’m gone). I am not sure why I enjoy it so much. Perhaps the clarity of purpose and the excellent odds of success coupled to some legitimate risk and a ~28h clock all combine. Perhaps it’s just an excuse to do guy stuff without whining and crying from little kids. And some of it is a true desire to learn more about driving and auto mechanics because I’m finding that stuff very interesting at this stage of life.

The 10 speed was intimidating at first and learning how to not use the clutch was another challenge. I’m not anywhere near smooth yet but I’m past the freak out in traffic stage.

Trailer off tracking is still a work in progress but I’m more comfortable there now too. I’ve jumped a few curbs along the way from not knowing how far I have to swing out.

Reversing is a TBD. I’d like to start small there but when horses are loaded and it’s 1am, wasting an hour to learn isn’t a great plan.

Anyway, I’m hoping for more hauls in the future, the long hauls with two of us are great, and I think I could possibly solo down the road with the 6 horse trailer and the ram, his second truck. I’m not sure how far I want to go with the CDL, it’d be a nice thing to have but getting the inspection and driving tests done will take some significant time. I’d probably just go through a 160h class to get it done because shoot, I might even learn something, so if I get to a point where I have a free month I might be tempted.

Oh and tie in to the motorcycle thing, palm desert to our SD house is 2.5 ish hours of a drive and has some traffic. I have been leaving my Tacoma in the garage there when I haul and retrieving it on our next visit. A better option would be a motorcycle, less space in the garage and easier getting through traffic. I’d imagine my wife will be a hard no on it, though I’ve had several in the past before her. But if I’m borrowing her brothers bike, I might be able to get away with it.

Nothing on Snopes to dispute it, and the bt.ly link does go to a news article that's been pulled (but page title still intact). Turns out there are several news stories on it, including major outlets like Washington Post. Here's one from a local ABC affiliate: https://abc7news.com/smart-cars-flipped-san-francisco-vandalism/24366/

The crime in San Fran is insane right now. I've read countless stories of how the homeless people will just shit on the sidewalks. A lot.

On sidewalks, stoops, wherever. There's a reason everyone's stairs are gated, if you don't make your doorstep inhospitable, it's assumed it's safe to camp there.
Company I work for has a building in the financial district, every time I've gone there to do LV or infra work, it's not uncommon to see junkies shooting up on the street within a couple of blocks.

I guess it's a walking argument of why having access to affordable housing is important, it's pretty much impossible to live in the city unless you're rich af or cool with renting a room. NIMBYs, wage stagnation combined with inflation have pushed out the working class out completely, homelessness is off the charts especially since early 2020.

Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to own a place there. I'm down to my last friend in Castro at this point, and he's been talking about moving back to ATL for the last couple of years. The only people staying are those who landed in the hills, or further south toward San Jose, or east to Oakland, even those places are priced out. AND you have a 1-2 hour commute to go 15-30 miles each way in traffic.

No thanks. We may have homeless encampments under our bridges in ATL, and horrible traffic for those unfortunate enough to require using an interstate to get around, but ... nowhere near what I see over there the last 10 years.

Oh, and the Karen/Ken factor is off the friggin charts with all the richie entitlement that's moved in. Incredible.

On the flip side, my sister’s house which is in need of all sorts of work is priced at 3x purchase off 10 years of growth. Tough to beat that kind of equity. It’s the best move her husband made, he nailed it on the location.

Been figuring on this for a while...

there are two types of "Headlight Fillers"

    Two piece:
    Screenshot 2022-02-08 101840.jpg

    and one piece:
    Screenshot 2022-02-08 101924.jpg

I've got the two piece style and I'm missing both of them. they're impossible to find and only made by Toyota. replacing them would cost $300 + paint. absolutely not happening. the two piece style are available aftermarket and much cheaper. what are the chances that I could buy a two piece and trim to fit? any intel?

In 2003 when they went to the plastic bumper I think they also went away from the one long piece. Maybe it was 2004. Can't remember what it's called now off hand.

The one piece style goes with the earlier grille and bumper combo found on 2000-2002 or so Tundras. The two piece style goes with the 2003 and up. A junkyard would be your best bet. Also variation from AC to DC headlights, not sure if that affects the trim piece.

I mean, my house has tripled just the same. It's bad enough now I actually couldn't afford to buy in my neighborhood if I had to - good problem to have, I guess? Only 12 more years to pay off the place.

But dammit man. I want my kids to be able to afford a place 10-15 years from now, but at current trajectory, we'll be in the same debacle Switzerland was in 15-20 years ago. When work started sending me over there in '03-'05 I was surprised to hear banks wanted folks to cough up 30-40% of the mortgage (minimum) up front if you wanted to buy. More than 70% of folks in the major city our building is located couldn't afford the down payment - forced to rent - and rent was only 150% of a monthly mortgage. When they heard I bought my place with an 85/15 ARM and basically only paid closing costs and for hardwoods throughout, jaws hit the floor.

Maybe I'm shortsighted on your bro's sitch, but sounds like the perfect time to sell, before the bubble pops. I have a close friend in Sunnyvale who successfully played that card twice since 2001. When things looked pop-imminent, he sold and rented. I'm no gambler, but he got it right 2x, bought a bigger place for way less after the downturn. His last purchase in Sunnyvale he pulled around 450k in '08ish, I just checked, Redfin & Zillow average it ~1.4m now. Totally nuts.

Big picture, looks a hell of a lot like craps.

Squaw Valley ski resort had to change their name cuz apparently it’s a derogatory word for a woman in Native American. Or some bs like that. Carry on though!
