Guess what, Everybody. With the launch of the 3rd gen Tundras, the 2nd gen (including my glorious Turd Gen) now have something in common with the 1st gens. We are the "Old Tundras" now. That means that some of you hold outs can now get into a 2nd gen and still maintain your street cred as driving an old truck. :boink:

Seriously though, I can't wait for some of you guys to get into the 5.7s and share your mad mechanicin' skills!

Nothing after 2014 for me. Too many screens for my taste. Shame you can't get rid of the orange interior lights without spending lotto-monies.

I think I'm set with my catalogue of vehicles for a while, but a 5.7 would be cool one day in 10 years. (Life plans)

Besides, I have to get through this current episode I'm in with a timing belt on a V8, and then a frame appointment. Body shop appointment, and then probably another timing belt job on the V6. That damn tent of pain is well worth its weight in gold for me at the moment. LOL

It does. Keeping focused on "simple" problems that have a definite solution keeps us from spinning our wheels on the complex (read as bullshit) problems that can really just mess us up. Keeps us from biting off more than we can handle.

Any tips for torquing the crankshaft pulley?

OEM costs like $1500-2k if you can still get. Member on here was recently looking for and supposedly it's unobtanium to find under $800 used. Looks like an easy opp for $500 quick turnaround that could be reinvested into wheels/tires or suspension updates...

    Torque wrench.

Yes, but how to keep the crank from turning while torquing?

Easiest way to torque down HB is to stop engine from turning by locking up rotation with whatever mechanical means necessary. If the unit has holes through it, you can use a tool like a steering wheel puller or pulley tool to insert two bolts and gain leverage. But easiest low-tech way is to hit with the mamba with 1sec tap, then check with torque wrench until you click out.

I've never had to replace on any UZ engine, so I'm probably a bad person to ask.

That's the only one out of the lot I could actually fit in my garage and still close the door.

I think that's what pisses me off about most modern trucks. They're like giant sedans with beds, and all are minimum 6-12" too long overall to fit in a standard garage.

Maybe truck companies are targeting people without closed garages to buy their vehicles?

I honestly think the issue is that most Americans are getting larger therefore they need more room. That's the only thing I can come up with. I don't understand the need for a giant truck either.

I think that fits a larger narrative, but I suspect it's more about perceptions. "Bigger is better", "Larger body = larger ability", "Bigger = more power" etc.

In my mind, that started with the 3rd gen Dodge Ram, didn't take long before the other manuf'ers caught on.

Not on a crank pulley but I've had luck reinstalling the belt, or a strap wrench.

Because gas prices are so low right now. Hard pass. I get bad enough gas mileage as it is. It would have to be a smoking deal because I don't see gas going anywhere but up unless we have a big economic crash.

How many kids do you have? That might have something to do with your lack of understanding. I drove a ranger until I had kids. Car seats don't fit well in extended cab the trucks. Get two kids in the back seat and you and another person up front now add a diaper bag, your wife's purse, your backpack with daily essentials, the dish of food you had to make for the family dinner you are going to, and somewhere try to stuff a truck gun.

Reverse repo usage skyrocketed to 1.3 trillion in, like, the last month. It just keeps getting higher every day, climbing by billions daily. If you went by this number alone, based on previous crashes and how much the market could be in turmoil over failed short closeouts ... crash could happen before EOY. But I'm not smart enough to understand any of that stuff.

I know this reply wasn't aimed at me, but dad of 2, median age 9y, youngest still needs booster in some vehicles, owner of Gen1 access cab.

I've managed to get by fine on all kinds of travel. Rangers are tiny, but my Gen1 was actually well-equipped for booster seats. I couldn't imagine installing our old infant seat where you install the base to the seat, and have the carrier that snaps into it, and also snaps into your stroller, it might be a tight squeeze. But generally speaking, we've had no issues to date, and the rear seat is high and supportive enough our son hasn't needed a booster for almost 2 years now, whereas he needed it in the 2nd row of our Highlander up until 6mos ago. Extra storage is easy accomplished with a bed-mount lockbox.

Mind you, I wouldn't want to go on a 6-8hr road trip with the kids 5 years from now when both are hovering around mid-teens, that would be a tight fit! But for middle year ages 3-14ish, definitely very doable. We go camping, hiking, etc. often and they never complain. Swear the rear seat is super comfy.

They lied to you!! Rear seat is like a bench booster seat. Bolt upright with no seat cushion angle to relieve pressure. My kids dreaded taking my truck on trips compared to mom's comfy cruiser. But they fit just fine all the way through the teen years. Didn't have any 250# lineman though.

I dunno, they like their vertical-back boosters, so maybe that's why they're cool with it. Longest road trip we've ever been on in the Gen1 is ~3hrs. But no linebackers here either.

when I was a teenager, we'd road trip to my grandparents house in my dad's FGT. 2.5 Hours, 6 people, in an Access cab.

Mind you I was the oldest, so 3 of the people were under 13.

With modern monetary theory it might not even come to a sudden crash, but that won't mean the dollars in my pocket will be worth much. I'm not smart enough to get it all, but I'm not banking in dollars being worth much in the future. I don't think the time before now and then is looking good for $2/gal gasoline.
Booster seats for nicely in smaller vehicles like my XJ. Infant seats are a squeeze even in my truck unless I really watch where I put my seat. Fits and fits well enough to use every day and for twice monthly 2+ hour trips are two different things. I would have a hard time making a first gen tundra access cab fit for me. I could and have considered making an access cab f150 work though. Those things have similar room in the back to what my double cab has. And the under seat storage is actually useable.

The cruise control, the door checks, and the under seat storage make no sense to me on my double cab. In an f150 or a titan you just mount your rifle or shotgun under the rear seat. In my tundra I don't even know what's under my seats because the car seats have to come out. I could probably fit a couple sandwiches down there lol.
