I know it doesn't get very cold where you are but how low can they survive? Does he live in your yard year round? I've thought about putting a turtle in our pond but I guess he would eat all our fish.

@Darkness What does Tuco think of his new roommate?

He barked at him a lot when he first saw him. Why the hell does that rock have legs???

Today when I got him unstuck from the corner Tuco came to check him out. Sniffed and watched for a few seconds and moved on. He layed around 15 feet away watching and went to sniff again when the turtle walked into the jungle.

Yes, in my backyard year round, it does disappear and hibernate a few months in winter. According to a quick Google search, they live 50-80 years. Tortoises are herbivores, which is why mine's cat food habit was very bad for it, but many turtles (as opposed to tortoises) do eat meat, including fish.

I actually never intended to keep ours as they are a protected species in AZ. One weekend I walked out into my garage and it was sitting between the truck and car looking up at me. I put it in the back yard so it wouldn't get run over on the street with the intention of calling Game and Fish Monday morning. But the damn thing disappeared and I couldn't find it for a while, so I assumed it got out. In retrospect though, considering all the effort we had to put forth to break it of it's bad habits from what I assume was previous captivity, I doubt it would have survived otherwise.

Turtles for ponds are also very messy and will sort of destroy the habitat if it’s not set up for a turtle like that.
My mom has a desert tortoise, Steve, that we’ve had in our backyard for 36 some years. She’s got a grass lawn so he nibbles on that, but she feeds him cantaloupe and watermelon and we pick prickly pear fruit for him, he loves those!
Sometimes he’s weird about hibernating, so she will do it for him; she puts him in a box in the garage and puts a towel over him, sometimes he wakes up on his own, other years we slowly wake him up.

Turtles love eating live stuff. I had red ear sliders when I was young and they loved insects and small goldfish. After the initial bite they hold the fish with a claw and eat it like a turkey leg.

@FrenchToasty Steve sounds like a lazy ass. :D

Did she get him as a baby or is he actually older than 36? That's neat to have a pet that long. I'm learning a lot here. I thought tortoise was the proper name for turtles and didn't realize they were different. Now it makes sense though. Around here we mainly have box turtles and the terrifying looking Alligator Snappers but I've never seen one of those in person.

So we have box turtles here as well, we had one when we had Steve as a little turtle, he was the size of a silver dollar or so, we had to separate them years later after we found out they shouldn’t be together. But he’s somewhere between 35-40 we’re thinking.
Also @Azblue i think sometimes fish n game and maybe the desert museum have desert tortoises up for adoption, if your ever looking for a companion for speedy.

Box turtles have always confused me. I think of them as tortoises. I had one of them when I was young as well, he didn't like water at all.

I saw an ornate box turtle on my dog walk this morning. He fattens up on all my strawberries. If I had known it was turtle day I would have snapped a photo. We have snappers too. I saw a good 1ft diameter guy crossing the road last week. Those things are nuts.

Yes, much like shark week on tv, it is now turtle week on Tundras. As such, we should all change our avatars to a turtle much like the recent change to pigeons.

Few years ago I witnessed a gentleman attempting to persuade a large snapping turtle across a local roadway with a length of 2x4.

I nearly peed myself when the turtle grabbed ahold of it and started fighting him for it.

Guy finally decided the board was a lost cause and just drug the turtle across the road and left him with the spoils of war.

Enjoyed reading about turtles. Found a fitting one. I once argued with a man that was higher than a kite on Payday 2 online lobby about whether or not turtles, alligators, snakes, and the like were reptiles. Interesting times.

    Enjoy.
