Interesting. They're punk rockers that don't do drugs. Like the pirates that don't do anything on Veggietales. Apparently they are also likely to be vegans and won't have caffeine or use prescription drugs or have promiscuous sex.

lol. I'm in the same boat but I feel if we ask more questions, we will just have more questions...

Reminds me of the captain off Wall-E movie....
    "Define earth"
Computer: "Earth" - the surface of the world as
distinct from the sky or sea.
    "Define Sea"

Tee-totalers of sorts. More like a self control sub-culture. Never heard of it. Sure haven't been practicing it o_O

People that actually live by the X are now doing okay in life and in their 30's-40's and do nothing but watch hockey. The edge kids of my generation only cared about Instagram.

I'd assume based on location. Probably not much of a punk rock or edge culture in Tennessee :notsure:

Individuals who find self care in certain ways, just as all humans do. Again, I have respect for those that keep edge. Some may not find drinking or drugs to be a problem, but for many it is.

It is a sub-culture within punk, hardcore, DIY and stuff. Abstain from drugs/ alcohol/ tobacco etc. Animal rights and human rights can be intertwined in the beliefs. Some even go as far as abstaining from prescription drugs, sedatives, etc. Some edgers abstain from sex outside of committed relationships. It's a scale. If you want to go extreme, there's hardliners who will beat the shit out of non-edge people.

@chrisb can explain much more about sXe, I've been around the lifestyle but have never claimed myself. Part of where the X originates from is bars/ clubs would put Xs on the hands of minors so they couldn't be served alcohol. Since sXe kids are sober, they've adopted the X on the hand as a symbol of their own. I've been to straight edge shows where there's clearly no alcohol or drugs allowed and they'll still X your hands.

They're not Q people in any way. As @alee891 said, they are individuals that have their own way of self care.

Perhaps I wouldn't fit into that group. I mean, sure, I don't drink or do any drugs, but I'm not doing it as a badge of honor/to be in any crowd. Not afraid of prescribed medication, either.

I don't know. I don't have an attraction to smoking anything because inhaling burnt particles into my lungs has always seemed like a bad idea.

Booze I have avoided for multiple reasons. It killed my Dad, step-douche was a drunk, the only time I was around my older brother while he drank he got shittier and more violent than usual, and I've never met anybody who is the same person drunk that they are sober. I don't care if other people want to drink as long as I don't have to be around it, or clean up the wreckage that it leaves behind.

The sex thing I guess I fall into their group for. Can't separate the physical side from the emotional, so I have to know and care about somebody first.

Punk music is not for me.

So, in conclusion, screw an organized group. I'll just be me. :notsure:

I'm just happy we're talking about music I like in this thread for once, even if others can't get along with it. I'm more in line with modern hardcore, but regardless, it all gets lumped into the same categorization. Further complicating things - some bands have members that are, and some that aren't. They still associate with the same community.

That reminds me, in my home town there was a band called "Free Beer". They always had a packed show to play at because people saw flyers mentioning "Free Beer" and showed up, only to be disappointed. Some of those shows had no beer at all.

    I thought it was brilliant.

You guys went hard before I had a chance to respond. Give me a sec and I'll get through all these.

@AzureNightmare @KNABORES This has been an ongoing discussion for several years now. It's not new and she knows how I feel about it. It's not as fully bottled up as it may have appeared in 'print'.

    Mostly joking.
I've been edge since I was 15. I'm damn close to 30 years edge and I'm big on streaks. Not likely to actually break edge.
And I have at least two (one fairly large) tattoos I'd need to do something about. I don't understand how anyone can rock an edge tattoo after breaking edge. TF.

    Someone nailed this answer.
Shows used to be at bars with all-ages in attendance. The method of separating the 'kids' from the adults was a big black X on the back of their hands. Bartenders would see it and immediately know to not serve.
The edge kids adopted this symbolism as a means of differentiating themselves from the other punk kids. It's not really any kind of club. More of a loose affiliation.

    We've been several times.
    The discussion isn't dead.

    Agreed.

Varying degrees of truth in here.
Straightedge lends itself to an activist mentality, so there is rampant vegetarianism and veganism, but it's not requisite.
Caffeine and prescription drugs vary person to person.
Promiscuity is generally frowned upon by all but the most libertine lifestyles. sXe is no different.

    Generally speaking, yes.
But hockey is just ice-soccer to me, so meh.
I have a friend in Philly who went to a show in 2019 where Slapshot headlined Sunday night. A comment was made about the size of the crowd and my friend later told me that he figured most of the kids old enough to be into Slapshot were likely at home tucking their kids in and checking their 401ks. :D

sXe was born from punk and adopted by hardcore. Hardcore is derivative of punk, but different. Punk is oft associated with anarchy and nihilism. Hardcore took that same energy and put a lot of heart and politics into it. sXe fits more with the life of an activist than a nihilist, but I've met sXe kids that were pretty fucking out there.

    Ha!
I feel the same about country and mumble rap.
I could recite from memory every word of that Minor Thread record.

Violence is a vastly underrated methodology.

Yeah, tough guys only thrive where they're allowed to.
The scene in my hometown self-policed. The shows I attended in Chicago self-policed. We had tough MFers at all shows, but they didn't get too far from what was acceptable without being asked once and then 'told' to calm TF down. ;)

sXe is a loose affiliation more than an organized group. As an elder statesman of the scene, I can tell you the kids these days use the same symbols we did/do, but they're doing some pretty different shit.
The whole point of sXe (and really punk & HxC) is to be true to your self and what you think is right...to question authority...to challenge the wrongs in the world you come across.
Radical sobriety (sXe) is a way to quietly give the finger to intoxication culture and to established societal norms. I don't need to drink to have fun or relax. I can be as big an asshole as the next guy totally sober.

You don't need to drink to survive.
    Question everything.
If you're not mad, you're not paying attention.
That's the HxC I grew up in. The kids these days all live and die by IG & FB & MSM. They're soft and coddled and all could stand some of those hardliners we used to play with 'back in my day'.
