He knows enough to keep us wondering about the possibilities

That kind of power can be dangerous for just one man, woman, lgbtq (hopefully I didn’t miss anyone) to hold.

Back in the day, friend spent great money on his Saab to make it go fast, stop fast. Got great #'s but i always asked along the way - why not buy a porsche, it starts where you'll end up & will cost less. he spent a lot of money to have perhaps the best Saab. Not sure what that was worth? Another friend started along same route with a Maxima, but listened to me. Now owns fast Porsche & can always sell it for what he's got in it - unlike the Saab.

I like optimize what you have. If you want something different - buy that. I'm the same with houses. Why buy a colonial & then spend money turning it into a mid-century modern? Makes no sense to me.

    Yep. Same philosophy here.

If you have and want to spend the money, then by all means its your money so go for it. Otherwise, optimization is the key if budget is critical. If you have to spend the money on maintenance, then spend it optimally.

Anybody willing to bet that he has all the parts to make this happen hidden in his garage?

I would agree on most of this, the optimize what you have is where it gets hairy. Some final tweaks to fit your needs and likes can still cost quite a bit. But when you start spending enough money to compete with something like a Raptor...... yeah maybe buying the Raptor would make more sense especially when you consider the resale value.

Alas i do not, i cannot find a aftermarket computer to control the trans though.

But if someone would make a bellhousing I would totally put a 6 speed fj manual trans with the AWD transfer case... now that would be fun

Hello folks. It's been a while since I checked in here. I'm pretty much just someone who briefly toured this site a year or so ago, and partook of your collective wisdom and experience to "refresh" my 2002. I am glad to see this community is still going strong.

Anyway, in early 2019, I did 12 hole injectors, 4.88 gears, and the Helwig rear swaybar - along with Bilstein 5100's, Helwig helper springs and a BAMmufller/Dirty Deeds catback system.

Re-gearing is expensive. Don't know what you mean by opening up a can of worms, though PHM. I've had zero problems, and with Darkness' help, my speedo even reads correctly courtesy of the Yell'r Box he installed for me.

I do notice the Hellwig rear sway as well. The catback system was purely candy. But I love the sound, and even my elderly/retired neighbors have made positive comments on the deep, but mellow and sweet exhaust note. It gets my seal of approval.

I did a lot of stuff all at once, but I think I can honestly say that the gears by far made the most difference, and at least for me were well worth the expense given my truck is used almost exclusively for towing.

Can of worms=lots of work (for me). I’ve never done a gearing job (me doing the work) and don’t plan on it. I could spend the money and have others do it like you have (assumption). I’ve read others who have done the regear and even mention they would be nice to do based on positive feedback (if I wanted to spend the money which is a lot and not worth it for me). I might/maybe tackle regear if my truck was just 2wd. 4wd fuggetabouitit!

Ah, got it. That's right you're a DIY kind of guy. I totally respect that. I DIY lots of other stuff, but not my truck. I was told that it was best to have someone very experienced set up the gears, and Keith at Dirty Deeds was kind enough to refer me to someone who has done tons of re-gear jobs. I think that's pretty much all this guy does, and he goes from shop to shop here in SoCal doing them nonstop. It worked for me.

From my experience and understanding, rebuilding a diff is a dirty job but not all that complicated...... dialing it in with the shims on the other hand that takes actual knowledge and experience. I paid $1,800 to regear the 01 tundra 4x4 and when I finally get back to work I will end up spending around $1,200 to get this truck done, bang for the buck cannot be beat. I have 275/55 20 tires so I’m thinking around 4.56 should still net me decent highway mpg

Yeah the shim part is the critical part it seems. I could swap all the other stuff in most likely, but the money is in the shimming. I suppose stuff could go real bad if the shims aren’t proper.

Setting up gears isn't too difficult, once you know what to do. Time consuming though. It's just knowing what to look for when setting up the gear pattern, which is dependant on both backlash (easier) and shims for pinion depth (harder).

If it's off, it'll be noisy and once noisy if driven on, it will never be quiet again.

For normal light duty driving and basically no fun truck stuff those will hold up. But I think most here do truck stuff so quality gears would be more reliable, quieter and just performs better

Bought a Black Dorman (regular duty) about 8 years ago and its holding nicely after much use. Lubed all the inners, latches, and rods. I painted/color matched mine which made my truck slower.

Mine haven't broken yet, but after almost 19 years of harsh weather extremes they can't last much longer - can they? I no longer have a tailgate, so that's one less I have to worry about.

Having never done the side handles before, but having been in the door way too many times I remember thinking how big a pain in the butt the door handles would be to change.

Yes it does look like the job would be a PITA... I am going to replace the Belt Molding Window Weatherstrip on this truck soon, I hope that job is fairly easy.

I know it’s a different kind of handle, but our 2010 4runner handles were pretty easy to swap out, I don’t remember breaking anything or getting in a panic; just the typical door card alignment pain in the butt.
I went from chrome handles to black:)
But with the newer vehicle trims, it was easy to find black
