Thats the only rear sticker that's reflective too.

It shines super nice with lowlight in a parking lot.

 

I don't know why, and can't explain it but for some reason I am scared of a head unit upgrade.

I can't decide if I can live without a volume knob. I don't have steering wheel controls, so probably not.

There isn't any stores that have head units on display like the days of old. If I can't feel it I probably won't buy it.

I'm not against changing the radio bezel to a 2003+ to accommodate a Toyota 86 radio.
Edit: as long as it would be plug and play with the existing wire harnesses.

I just feel like there is a lot of room for goof ups on my end on this.

Today I cleaned their ice machine, and got it running tip top. And also checked out the walk-in coola



the bar tender was saying The cooler freezes stuff; the t stat was set wrong, so it’s never shut off since that stat was installed/adjusted. But also even after the stat was satisfied; the liquid solenoid was letting a whisp leak by and causing the condensing unit to run non stop and ice start to form. When I removed all power, the condenser shut off properly on low pressure pump down switch. So I’ll go back tomorrow and rewire the entire control circuit and/or replace the t stat.

 

I was scared too. Mostly cause I wanted to keep it all oem but also for your reasons. But I decided to swap in a new head unit and it was an amazing decision. Really makes the truck look nice too

 

Hmm.. ls430 had thena761e transmission. 6 speed auto... I wonder if the bellhousing from one of those can be used to put a a760f from a 5.7 behind the 4.7...

I’d really love a 6 speed manual trans for the 2uz though. Fj manual would be neat... and the manual t case is AWD In those..

Have you heard anything about the ipt transmission valve body upgrade? Allegedly it makes the truck feel more aggressive

 

Ive looked at those 1KD swaps that diesel toys does, as well as the 4BT. There’s also a 4cyl diesel that Navistar International makes.

Ive also considered a DT360, but they’re a bit too big and heavy for the Tundras I’m thinking.

 

I started looking into it for the 01 tundra I had, ultimately I decided it wasn’t worth it for me since I really don’t tow or haul. Are parts readily available for these engines?

 

Yes for the 4BT and DT360, as they plate from a family of different engines. The Toyota KDs I’m not sure about.
My problem is, if I’m going diesel, I’m going old-school mechanical injection does I can work on it. Then, the small engines don’t have the output to even match a stock 4.7, so Then I have to mod it. And then, a small engine like a 4BT is still 250lbs heavier than the 4.7.

so basically, it isn’t worth it unless you’re wanting a ginormous project.

 

That’s other part of equation, no matter how you look at it your gonna have to modify the engine to fully realize the benefits. $10k and yet there is more to go. I have been doing a lot of research and trying to squeeze out what was available in the v8 but there is not much to be had safely. So I’ve shifted my thinking to getting the maintenance done with minor upgrades with proven track records and once I feel good there I’m going for a lsd and gears. That is really the only thing that can boost performance safely IMO

 

Hell, I can't even pull off a brake upgrade without surprises. I think I'm leaving my truck alone for a while.

 

Your Maintenance Plus Minor Upgrades strategy is what I’ve been doing. My entire goal is Optimization of the truck with minor improvements. Fuel, Spark, and Air are the big 3 from readings.

Fuel (12 Holes Injectors) and Spark (New Ig Coils) are Optimized. Air (New o2Sensors) is going to be left OEM which is best. No goofy air filters here.


Gears are just opening a can of worms and great expense, IMO. If I wanted to blow the money on gears they would be nice I’m sure. LSD is nice as its already on the truck.

Not much left to do on my truck at this point.

 

Whats your plan on fixing the brakes?

 

That’s any torque converter type transmission, modify valve body for higher line pressure? Harder shifts, and longer lasting clutches.

Spoke with a local transmission guy with a small shop about these. He says he put a ‘hard shift kit by Sonnax’ in for a Turd Gen guy and Turd Guy couldn’t stand it. Brought it back and put the old style back in.

Not much performance benefits either he said. You’ll just feel the shift harder. Kinda like a goofy loud muffler makes you sound faster/cooler, but the reality is no gain.

 

Only thing to do is live with it, replace MC, or buy 13WL calipers.

Can I use 13WL calipers with these same rotors or do I need to replace the rotors too?

Edit to add, I'm not even sure if there is anything wrong with the MC. That could be a big waste of money.

 

I keep my newer rotors that were replaced just a year earlier from the OEM warped originals.

Not sure of your age on the rotors, but if they are still good you can use them.

Did you do that MC Test I posted from the FSM?

 

A shift kit alone can get old and annoying. A full valve body mod and the shift kit, 12 hole injectors and a 2wd lsd 4.30 then add sway bars. I don’t know but that sounds pretty solid

 

I’ll take your word on the fully valve mod. The 2wd re-Gear is easy compared to the 4wd and you can do the LSD at same time. The Hellwig Rear Sway Bar will blow yer mind. Assuming you’ve got the front sway still?

 

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I didn't really understand that test. The way they word things in the service manual is a little wonky. I'll read it again when I'm sitting in the truck so I can try to test it.

I was reluctant to post any positive review yet but I will say the brakes do bite hard now. Even the owner of the shop said it brakes well. I've given them about 80% hard stop and the these 33's start to lock up on dry pavement which isn't something I could do before.

I did read in the FSM that mushy pedal can be a sign of a bad MC.

 

As you know, the injectors really improved the tranny shifting. The valve body mod would continue on that but with more performance by holding gears longer in turns and the normal up & down shifts under load. If different springs are available you can dial in how aggressive it all performs. I just don’t anyone that has tried it on there tundra, not many shops do these upgrades anymore. I have no experience with that shop either.

 

Yeah. After the 12 Holes, I felt like the transmission was much better shifting. I’ve even referenced that it was like a gear upgrade (even though I’ve never experienced new gears). That lazy 1-2 gear shift wondering went away with the 12 Holes.

My A340 and your A750 transmissions differ in 4 versus 5 speeds, but its interesting in that the injectors give the transmission a new feel on both.

You should give the rear Hellwig Sway a go right away if $ permits. Even with LSD, I would have the inside tire break slightly on stop to 90° turns. The Rear Sway stopped it.

 

Oh you gain in 0-60 just simply due to a quicker shift, but for 90% of people they’re too harsh to put in a daily.

 

I’ll look into the hellwig, I was surprised by the injectors and to see both of us noticed it means we are both crazy

Yeah I was shocked with the results. Having never done this type thing before I just wanted to have new cleaner injectors as my goal. These 12 Holes were the same price as having the old ones cleaned locally.

The promise was added horse power/better mpg (can’t claim or deny this), better fuel atomization (it must be), and a more modern shifting engine (definitely for sure!).
