If one of my techs gets it wrong, he is backflagged his diag and then he eats his labor on the correct repair. That's why my shop's Fixed Right the First Time score is 98.7%

 

A lot of the problem is the training in dealerships. Toyota does a good job to send the guys out for training annually, but the Icar stuff is a bit of a joke. Its a powerpoint / video training session for the majority of the time with a quiz at the end that can be retaken pretty quickly.

I think that most of the shops "training" come from disgruntled mechanics that see the new guys as a problem instead of the future and extra help.

 

I’ve already called it, i dont touch things with screens. Anything newer than 2002 is officially above my pay grade, and the main reason dad bought a 2002 q45. I said i’d work on it, so ive had to work on it.

 

This is why it’s so crucial to help out when possible with this stuff. Take time with people. And pay it forward when it’s been given to you.

I don’t just talk the talk, I walk the walk. It’s why I was willing to throw out a morning to swing by, walk through it, and help out, share that knowledge. We all should be so willing, and it starts with an example. A little inspiration of confidence in someone goes a helluva long way.

I fondly remember when I was in my early teens, and my stereo tuner stopped working. I had that damn thing down to pieces, lid off, boards out, etc. while dad was at work. It made me realize how basic everything was under that lid. But then, when I found the problem (swollen capacitor), Dad was, like, "Oh. Now you expect me to teach you how to solder?"

He did, though. And I learned. And I went on to fix several amps/tuners for friends after that, though two-thirds of them were usually a blown glass fuse on the board, because they were being stupid.

 

I grew up helping my dad and then progressed to working on my own stuff. But now that I am past 50, I am starting to have mobility issues in my finger joints. I have already had surgery on 3 of them and just jammed my middle finger that was showing signs of it too along with another. Getting into tight spaces wrenching on things is terribly painful, especially if it slips and I bang that knuckle on something. I can't bend it for about an hour after. So, I try to do what I can and pay for the rest for now. I can't wait to see the look on my daughter's face when she officially gets to drive my dad's truck for the first time. She's been helping when she could and I plan to show her how to work on things as well now that she is driving.

 

Yeah, the fact retirement age is considered to be 65, and there are some who are determined to up that to 70 in the near future ... is a joke. By then, those of us who actually put in the work, our bodies are too damn beat up to enjoy it. Unless you're a billionaire, or executive, or whatever. Which is super messed up.

I think we might within a year or three of each other's age. I've got an autoimmune condition that'll be with me forever, and it's starting to cause arthritis. It started in my big toe and secondary toe on one foot, then moved to the other. Now it's firmly in one of my arches, and started showing signs in the other arch. I'm dreading when it finally makes it to my hands. I already have enough issues with these damn ganglion cysts that keep popping up at the base of my fingers, I had surgery to remove one (permanently, thankfully), but the rehab part after surgery, and the temporary nerve damage SUCKED, so I really don't want to do it on the other two.

I realized i was too good for hard work after my motorcycle wreck. I’ll do hard work, but i do it on my time.

 

I grew up on a farm. If it broke, we fixed it. If we needed a barn, we built it. I was taught by " come on boy.." Bought my first pickup truck at 15. I'll be 62 this year. I have retired in part because I can see myself getting older and my parts not working as well as they once did.. I have things that I wanna do still.

Well shit, I finally got the email I had been dreading from bodykits.com. The candy cane tails are not actually in stock, and as I already knew, were discontinued. Damn, they were the only site online that still has them listed as in stock. I guess I need to find someone to 3D print some. But the KBD valence should ship soon.

 

Beau was letting people take a ride in his truck to experience the 15's, at T2S. They were insanely loud. On Broken Arrow trail, my driver side latch for my cap got stuck, and no matter how much I man handled it, I couldn't turn it. I thought I was going to have to break it... Beau pulls up next to me and cranks up the bass. True story, on my life, the bass vibrated the latch free and worked fine ever since.

 

@des2mtn I might've missed it, but did you swap the MC or brake booster for your rear disc swap?

Went ahead and ordered another Amazon cheapo for now just to get it here. Idk why I'm so irritated about having to manually unlock my doors. Probably cause it's hot and muggy outside.

 

This is the same reason I always do my research and have at least a working theory before stepping into a doctor's office.

I suppose I'll search "brakes" by Dez and endlessly scroll through all those results. Truth is I have little to nothing better to do for the next 3 hours anyways.

I didn't know what Casey was talking about when he said 13/16 and 1" earlier. Now it makes a little more sense. Brakes are very new to me.
