    ^ this.

Unless you like a softer pedal. Preference does play a part.

I've heard the T100 master cylinder is an upgrade for our trucks. I can't help but wonder why Toyota would have used a better MC on an older, lighter truck with smaller brakes though.

As long as the trucks stop better than they do now, I'll be happy. I don't care about the pedal's feelings :D

On a side note, did you ever install the 4.30 gears? The lack of low end power in my 03 is starting to bug me. 4.10's wasn't enough.

Theres a bunch of variables, pedal stroke & leverage…mine is 13/16, for some reason i feel like the t100 might be 1”. I think the t100 also had a dual diapham booster, so you get a certain amount of boost at the top of pedal travel, and a different amount of boost at the lower half of pedal travel.

Its all so touchy feely, like i hate the brakes on grandpas tacoma, way too touchy at low speed. But theyre fine on the highway.

I was one of the late bloomers to doing my own more in-depth car repairs as a millennial (as you saw first hand with the VC job). Both grandpas died when I was real young and my dad lived in TN for the majority of my young life. I did see him every other weekend or so but the majority of my life experience was living in a house with my mom, grandma, aunt and 2 sisters. My mom learned from her dad and taught me the basics of car maintenance like checking fluids, oil change, spark plugs and so on. I then moved in with my dad when I was in 10th grade who then had time to teach me a bit more.

I "graduated" to be the man of the house at a young age for a long while and had to learn a lot from Youtube university or by just fucking up and learning in all avenues from car repair to home repair. Being on the poorer side of the tracks we just had to make things work or fix it ourselves.

I guess my point is that I think everyone can learn to do their own repairs, but they either weren't taught and don't care to learn now or they lack the confidence in themselves to do it.

one of my favorite things to argue with my grandpa about. He claims mechanics are in my genes, that i come from a long line of folks that fix their own stuff, and my brother somehow got the recessive ‘take your shit to a mechanic’ genes. I dont buy it, i was interested in cars before i could pay people to work on em, and had to learn, my brother preferred video games, and his truck is only an appliance. He knows how to hook things up to a home network, but i have to look up instructions almost every time. Its not that he cant learn, its just not in his interests.

I was gonna say what Des said. My pedal still takes a bit to bite, but once it bites it doesn't take much.

With that being said, I have to add that my rear brakes have never worked before from what I can tell. They've always been covered in diff juice. My fronts are due for replacement after about 18k miles.

I was always interested to learn about cars, but both grandpas died before I was born and Dad was an engineer. So I learned how to use tools to build some stuff, but didn't even know how to change oil til I was like 22. It wasn't until I got offered a job at the lube shop in Conroe, that people started to teach me a little about cars. I'm definitely a late bloomer and still blooming.

A lot of it has to do with interests and a lot of it has to do with how you are / were raised. When I was a kid, we never went to daycare, we went to work. From as early as I can remember through high school, summertime was worktime. My dad would put all three of us in his work van (no car seats, we sat on wooden wire spools) and we were electricians from morning until evening. He used us to run wires. Climbing in attics in the morning and crawling under houses in the afternoon. As a result, I knew how to wire an entire house at like 10 years old. Also spending the day on job sites with plumbers, carpenters, framers, masons, we picked up other skills too. And then there was Charlie, my dad‘s helper. Charlie schooled us in street knowledge. Street knowledge was an education within itself.

I worked on cars a little with my dad when I was younger. Then we bought a clapped out piece of shit Dodge as my first real car. The clutch promptly exploded and the suspension fell apart and the brakes almost failed. Got the crash course in many areas of automotive repair. Everything short of pulling the engine. My dad was a methodical, by the book, use your shade tree ingenuity as the last resort type of mechanic. Parts got labled when they came off. Parts got washed before they went back on. New seals when re-installing parts. Follow the steps in the manual, make your own short cuts as you see fit when doing the repairs. Make your own tools as needed when you didn't have the right one or the specialty tool. And we worked on everything. Cars, trucks, dishwashers, mowers, AC system, dryers, whatever the fuck ended up breaking that we couldn't afford, or didn't want to afford to pay someone else to fix for us.

Dad was pretty good with teaching the easy stuff, but he moved out when i was 13, so i took the ase class, and hung out at racetracks, and tinkered mainly with minibikes & dirtbikes until i got my comanche & HAD to learn troubleshooting. And i’ve always had junk that needed work until this truck. Its needed a few things, but hasnt ever left me stranded.

My step dad on the other hand had the opposite approach. He told me that the ability to work on stuff yourself was a great skill to have. But he chose to make money so he could pay someone else to do it. Fair, until there's no one available to work on your stuff. Or you can no longer afford to pay them. I'm at a point where I can afford to pay someone else to fix stuff for me. I just refuse to pay the exorbitant cost coupled with the subpar at best work that you receive. And I like to work with my hands. And I like to fix things. Very satisfying.

I still want to be able to drive the speed limit on i10 West of Houston (70-85mph).
I think the 4.10's are going to be perfect if I ever get around to refurbishing and installing the Powerdyne I scooped up.

The costs today solidify my willingness to learn to do more on my own. In all areas, too.

Hell, I was quoted $900.00 to repipe my kitchen sink. The baskets were leaking so I replaced those and wanted more space under my sink due to the PO adding a second Ptrap for the dishwasher for whatever reason. I did not pay that haha.

I’ve let contractors onto my property & was disappointed both times. Once for the shop, and once for the roof/canopies. I’d have hated doing it, and it woulda doubled my costs, cause i’d need tools, but i’d be happier.

Me and Dad built our shop with his work buddy and his son. It fucking sucked. Luckily Dad's work buddy had some scaffolding and a John Deere with a bucket, to help us get the main I-beam lifted up high. We just had to build it in the summer. What a fucking miserable summer that was.

ran out of tape, but its spray glued. Guess its doing something since i’ve spread the load across the joints. Meh, its too windy to try to glue on the bubblewrap. But it fits perfect.

Gonna go get some oak 2x3’s to make my own slats to hold it up. Need to find a stick on solar panel to run a couple 12v fans across the airgap during the day. Guess i’ll need a pair of switches, one to blow out the driver side, the other to blow out the passenger side. How many real world watts do those stick-on hood mounted solar panels produce? I dont wanna have to tie it to either of my batteries.

I've got a small section of fabric separating from the headliner on the driver side right where it meets the windshield. What are you guys using to repair small areas like that? I've got a spray can of 3M automotive adhesive, but it'll get all over everything in such close quarters and the VOCs in that stuff are off the chart! I test sprayed a little and the smell filled my workshop for the rest of the day.

I havent used it on a headliner, but i’d bet you could wipe on some E6000 rubber style glue that’ll hold. My caps insulation got too hot for 3m super77. I got some super90 to try this time.

Sounds a hell of a lot like my childhood, frankly.

    And also really similar here.

Only difference (maybe) being that, if something broke, and it was my stuff (like a vehicle), Dad would explain how it works to me, if I didn’t already know the problem, and quiz me on what the most likely culprit was. If I guessed it right; he’d pay for the part. If I guessed it wrong, I paid for the part. I had to install it with his instructions either way, which is where the hands on training came into the picture, but his goal was, I learned how these things work one problem at a time, I did the repair with my own hands, and I got rewarded for recognizing the problem’s source. Oh, and I guess a fourth thing, we weren’t spending money we didn’t have letting a shop diagnose and fix it for us. These days you can’t even do that, I swear half these jokers parts-cannon stuff without doing diagnostics these days.
