Probably doesn't put enough amps out for what y'all may be doing, but I've been using this Elenco XP-752A (PDF) for most of my DC testing on misc DC-based stuff.

Fairly sure it's China-made, and I think the max output is like 5A on either this one or its sibling model. But it's plenty to see if, say, a car radio fires up. Which reminds me, I got an OEM harness for this 86 radio, I need to hook it up and test with some speakers to make sure it works.

A used Sorenson power supply will last you forever however it weighs a fuck ton. We still use dual 24V, 30A ones made from the 80s which are super quiet for noise. This is before switching supplies became commonplace. U.S.A. made of course.

I mean, I've got a PC PSU I could use if I needed extra. I got rid of all the CCTV PSUs I had.

I wouldn't mind having a Sorensen HPD 15-20, they're nice and compact. Pretty sure once you get over the 20A/30A output DC units, they all switch to 19" rack-mount chassis. While the Elenco one isn't graceful or anything, I know it's rated for 3A max, but I've really never had a problem with working with any of the small electronics I've touched on over the years of having it. I'd need to look at the manufacture date, I'm pretty sure it's late '90s/early '00s

I've got an odd one I can't figure out. It's a squeaking sound on the passenger side that only occurs whenever the truck has been driven a while. It is not constant. It only happens right before I come to a stop and whenever I take off from a stop. It only happens around 2-3mph and it does sound rotational. The truck was recently on the lift and everything checks out. UCA's were greased about 6 months ago? LBJ, LCA, Steering rack, inner tie rod was 2 years ago. CV axle was warrantied out a few months ago when the wheel bearing and hub was replaced and they check out as well. I'm super paranoid about LBJ failure, but the rotational creaking makes me believe that it's not that culprit. Shoot some ideas at me because with the baby I only have limited pockets of time I can really dig into the truck. 12 + 6 and 9 +3 feel solid.

Probably next Friday depending on the weather. I need another bottle of 5.1 so I can drain the line and fill it again. I've got the heat shields coming to. Gotta remember to grab the bailing wire from work. And a ball-peen hammer to smack the header in a bit. Custom cars suck.

Correct. It does it if I ride the brake or let completely off. Always under 5mph coming to and from a stop. Very audible in a drive thru. A buddy helped confirm it is the passenger side. At first I thought it was the carrier bearing or u joints since it sounded like it, but I greased the shit out of them and swapped the carrier bearing and the noise persisted.

Yesterday I noticed a low grumbling growl emanating fron the truck when I turned the AC on full blast. On 3rd setting the growl is quieter but still barely audible. When shutting off the AC it's quiet. The growl persists even when engine is off. Here are some imgur clips showing what I mean. It's kind of hard to discern the growling but hard to un-hear it.

Is this a sign of an AC compressor going bad?

Stick your head under the glovebox when you turn it on. Is the sound louder?

If yea, it’s either debris in your blower motor, debris in your evap housing, or the blower motor is going out.

Pop out the blower motor, 3 x 10mm screws and look for crap. Maybe run it outside the housing.

Mine didn’t. Only when I backed out of the garage cold, and only for a couple seconds. And it was baaaaarely touching the rotor. Drove me absolutely fucking nuts trying to find that shit. There’s a video of it on here somewhere.

Welp, all this talk of DC power supplies and car stereo install led me to finally pull out the GT86 radio I have on-hand, fire it up, and make sure it works. The cheap OEM-replacement harness I got on fleaBay worked like a champ to feed in power and speaker outputs.

    Things I learned.
    • This radio supposedly came out of a GT86 owned by "Ari"
    • Its last recorded location was Rockville MD, based on the last loc, looks like it was pulled at Absolute Electronix, I guess they then donated it to Goodwill after, and I appreciate that, it's a good radio ... awesome they don't just toss things in the garbage, and offer radios a second life
    • It woulda been super cool if the "Ari" in question was Ari Katz, frontman for the punk band Beach Rats and Lifetime, but I highly doubt it
    • There were two phones stored, both iPhones, one was Ari's, I deleted both phones and their content for privacy, reset to factory after, then paired my own, and ...
    • The radio works like a champ, at least on the internally-amplified outputs, but pushing the volume anything over 50%, my power supply couldn't keep up and started clipping
    • Strangely, and I didn't know this was a thing, but the OEM radio apparently lets you tell it what it was installed in? For whatever reason, it was set to a Corolla iM?!
    • Now I just need a vehicle to install it in, maybe it'll go in one of the kids' first Toyotas, just need to get a compatible mic and backup cam
    • Will be curious if there are any fun ways to tap low-level outputs from the other plugs at the rear of the radio to hook up an external amp
    Some pics, just because.
