Not if you’re getting showered in brine driving down the highway.

What would be nice is if the new Tundra used optional plastic panels to shield the undercarriage that were easily removable. All the new vehicles seem to have them now. Not so removable though but definitely helpful in the winter.

Finally found a cheap self-clean car wash on my way home from NH. Only tree-fiddy for 5 minutes. Not as powerful as the wands here but acceptable to clean off the undercarriage periodically.

"According to NHTSA documents, Tacomas equipped with 16-inch brake systems positioned inside 17-inch wheels have a tight tolerance, and if mud and dirt build up on the interior of the wheels when off-roading, eventually contact can be made with the components and the intruding mud, which could lead to damage and wear through the brake lines"

I guess it makes sense, but now I want to see pics of this happening.

Whats the recall fix going to be 18" wheels? or Mesh style 17's?

Toyota sure is having a rough time lately. Just don’t make ‘em like they used to.

I think the American side of Toyota has been mostly a disaster from the start, when we started designing "Toyotas" instead of Japan. Americans hyper focus on BS like nannies and tech instead of Toyota reliability. I say bring back the old lineups with modern engines. I know somewhere they were making brand new old design land cruisers with brand new interiors and modern engines

Yeah, Toyota used to always lag behind in features for reliability. Now that they are catching up seems to be more quality problems. My wife drives a ‘15 Lexus which has a lot of nice features but is old school compared to today’s vehicles. It has been the most reliable car we have had in 30 years.

    Weight reduction, mostly rust.
If that's the actual routing... someone needs to be slapped, in the face, with a chair.

That's correct. I think a lot of the quality issues are to do with how many features/options/accessories that modern vehicle manufacturers are pumping into each car now. The more things you have, the more things can break. GM even has a seat vibrator that pairs with their parking sensor to give you a sort of haptic feedback instead of an audible notification.

Toyota has always followed Kaizen (continuous improvement), and this is the reason Toyota has had such great reliability. They were never very flashy, until the newer generations. The recalls and issues seem to be far more common on these more aggressive looking models with high technology packages.

I think it's more simple than that. Capitalism. Corporations sole focus is maximizing shareholder value. That means cutting costs as much as possible and sacrificing quality where they can. Toyota is no longer immune to this. Even our 2012 RAV4 doesn't have the same level of quality as my Tundra.

I think it's both and more. Like everything, not a black & white issue, it's medium grey.

    i.e.
    • Capitalism influencing production at lower cost to maximize profit and value for the shareholder
    • Capitalism influencing producing a product with more market appeal and more bang vs. buck, featurewise, i.e. more features, more shit to break, more potential conflict between features, more convoluted manufacturing and manufacture processes
    • Moving to new drivetrain technologies and status, diverting from the original (i.e. no more V8 in full size trucks, more turbo-based engines, etc. which don't have decades of precedent behind them like prior generations)
    • Unstable availability of silicon-based products in the market, and global inflation on those products driving up costs while companies are trying to do the 1st item in this list
    • Failure of production to recover fully, returning to its pre-2020 status and stability after the global pandemic
    • Change in workforce production and attitudes after the global pandemic
    • Add in greeflation from the manufacturers and dealership and maintained hyperinflation of the used and new car market by places selling them and it's a shitshow
It seems to me you didn't start hearing about a lot of these reliability problems & major failures until around early/mid-2021, when we saw the drop in component availability for damn near anything electronic that goes into cars. I won't buy 2021/2022/2023 vehicles because I've seen too many cases of lemons and massive failures for cars produced in that timeframe, when factories were trying to continue churning out vehicles while they were on short supply of components.

Has anyone here had any experience with 1A auto parts? They post a ton of helpful DIY videos on Youtube but I'm not sure about the part quality.

Not sure I would order parts from them as I mostly go OEM for known quality, but I bet they are middle of the road stuff. Sue is great though and her how to videos rock.

1A is basically a parts vendor like any other auto parts store. It's going to be like RockAuto, in that it's a smaller family-owned operation, but you'll see fewer brands of parts. They sell a ton of TRQ stuff just like your run of the mill local stores.

I have. I bought their coils instead of Densos to fix my immediate misfire issue. They’re still going for 3-4 years straight but I’ve had to replace 3 already which can temporarily fail or fail permanently without warning. I keep an extra coil on hand and a 10mm socket wrench just in case. Thankfully they sent me an extra 8 coil set for free for what was thought to be initially defective in the first shipment. I can’t really complain when I got all 8 coils for $150.

What's the consensus on antiseize for o2 sensors? I'm in an area where exhaust bolts come off with an impact and LCA cam bolts don't seize. This is for the Vic, btw.

I could never get away with that here. A coworker removed his O2 sensors after 200k miles and he broke off the bung hole on the pipe since the sensor was rust infused into it. He had to get that fixed to pass inspection.
