The fire didn’t reach our block. The evac got lifted 2 days ago. We went back last night to clean all the ash that made it into the house and start tackling the smoke smell. The water is still unsafe to anything with so won’t be going back till the end of the week. We have been staying with my parents and that has been a blessing.

While driving around yesterday, it looks like something out of a movie. So much disaster and people living at other cars. So many armed troops on ever corner

Sounds devastating. And to think (A) a considerable amount was apparently intentional/arson while (B) billionaire talking heads are trying to politicize it. The whole situation sucks.

Glad you and yours are safe. Talk about close calls...

Had a nearly fatal incident after my roof repairs......

The roofer replaced my vent covers for preventative maintenance as they were rusting and pulling up from the roof. This was completed a few weeks ago and all seemed well. Friday my wife decided to go ahead and get the Christmas items put up in the attic since I had the day off. She goes up and I start handing things up to her. Near the end I look up and see some steam rolling around the florescent tubes, which I though was odd. Then I noticed that the roof was extremely saturated around the vents. I automatically assume that there is a water leak now. I then get on my roof to clear the melting snow off the area to prevent any further issues and went back into the attic to put down a tarp and dry off the wood on the roof as much as possible. This is where it gets funky....

Upon closer inspection the water soaking was more to do with condensation than with a central leak. There wasn't a water line and the water was dripping from multiple spots on the plywood. I start looking further and notice that my gas vent isn't venting at all anymore and the gas/hot vapors are rolling into my attic essentially pumping CO into my living space and has been since they installed the vent. If my attic wasn't vented in the front and back then I'm not sure that I'd still be here to tell the tale. The condensation was from the hot gas interacting with the cold attic.......

I quickly made my way out of the attic and called the roofers. After 3 days of not having my heat turned on they came out and fixed everything, but not before I had to argue with the CEO of the company that its not HVAC related. The roofer came back out and removed the vent to see if it was vent related and low and behold it vented out of the roof as designed. After this they agreed to cover it all under warranty and now we are back in action.

    That was a close call.

Don’t you have a fire/carbon monoxide alarm like most households? You may want to buy one per your wake up call.

I have a fire alarm and it's right next to the entrance to my attic door. It must not be dual purpose. It was installed in the house when we purchased it. I'm getting one on my next day off.

Make sure to get a dual smoke/CO detector with a built in 10yr battery so you don't have to worry about changing the battery so often.

I need to order the dual units too. My house has a hardwire for them. I have NOT been able to find this info online, but if one of them goes off, do they ALL go off?

They are powered together and wired together

Sorry about that. The cause was the gas vent pipe that leads out of the attic. The new cover they installed didn't allow the gas to vent out upwards and was venting down back into the attic instead.

Here's a picture of it. The only way I was able to notice it was because of the hot gas pumping into the cold attic causing the condensation.

If they have a 12/3 running to them, they're interconnected. Just a 12/2 and they're only powered.

Yeah, I think they ultimately sold out. They have a flaw where they eventually burn out/melt down on the back of the LED square is.

I personally don't like fanned bulbs, that's just me.

Something else that annoys me about combo detectors is do BOTH sensors have to be made for the alarm to go off or just one or the other?

Mine don't have fans, just heat sinks. At least that's what it looks like. I guess I'll know once I power em on. I had "Life Time LEDs" with fans in my Tacoma, years ago. They would die every 6-9 months, but were always warranteed. On the third or fourth set, they upgraded me to the latest, more expensive model for free, and I immediately sold them to a forum member on TW. I was so over changing em out all the time. I hope these last longer.
