I’ve never found naval jelly to work as well as muriatic acid. Only downside with acid is you need it fully submerged. #VatOfAcidBro

Although it wasn't bagged, I had a friend from Tyler who owned the sickest '77(?) C10 that was tubbed and had a 454 w/ alot of other well-done mods. You could feel that truck just sitting under your ass swaying at idle from the amount of power it had. Smiles per gallon.

    Do it.

Muriatic acid is like bringing a nuke to a knife fight though. It will absolutely murder metals, taking good metal with it. Naval Jelly isn't as abrasive, and is military grade (in power and safety). I use it a fuckall of a lot.

I have a few pictures and whatnot about tackling the project. Thinking of creating my own little thread about the project since it was VERY hard finding relevant info online. Hence, not gonna double up on info at the lunch table.

Lol. I get it, but someone from a different part of TX would probably disagree. That's TX and Texans for you. It's so damn big and diverse depending on where you're from. But, roses, man

I lived in the DFW area for 10 yrs BITD. Long before it blew up. I know TX and native Texans and their mentality very well, and I mean that most respectfully. If I didn't live here, I probably would be back there.

Meh. Perfectly fine for non-critical fitment. I use it on machine screws and other small items and the amount of good metal removed is minimal so long as you don’t keep it in the acid for way too long. Besides, it does remove every spec of rust.

Saw a similar Salsa DC listed for a while up here, $14.5K, picture Clearly showed a gayping F-hole in the frame looking into a front wheel well! Tired to find it again... it's gone.
Thing about up here in Michigan, ANYTHING other than a dealership sale is considered AS-IS period. I had the same thoughts, some poor person is gonna learn an expensive lesson.

Yep. On the road and working great. Just a huge pain in the ass getting your hands in there to remove bolts and nuts. I may just drain the radiator and change the coolant next time to get the hose in my way off and make it 10x easier.

Then you're aware of the animosity some SE Texans, like myself, have for DFW. :p:rofl:

Lots of Texans hate Austin. I love everything about central Texas, though. Even Austin and San Antonio.

Glad to hear. Just FYI, I spent my formative years in the Boston area (Beacon Hill, Lowell, Billerica, Dracut, Everett) and still have family and friends up that way. Haven't been in New England area for ~ 45 yrs, though. Too effin cold for me, but I'm an Irish kid that grew up in an Irish and Italian neighborhood. Great memories.

Of course! I still love Texas and native Texans. You sort that stuff out amongst yourselves.

Noticed a clunk today when going over speed bumps and larger pot holes. I'm about due for another oil change, and that was the last time I greased the drive line. Single clunk if I hit the speed bump doing 20, and I'd get a second clunk on the rebound if I hit it closer to thirty. Any suggestions on what to check under there, maybe sway bar bushings or steering rack bushings? Also feels closer to the front through the floor, but hard to tell where. Mainly noticed it cause I had the window down.

@455h0le_dachshund , as someone who has been around, I can state unequivocally that native Texans (natives, mind you), are some of, if not the most, hospitable people I've ever had the pleasure of being around, no matter what region I was in. I think I was always welcomed wherever I was because I didn't impose my own viewpoint. I simply lived as those I was around did without judgement. Some of my best memories and always a pleasure to visit no matter where it is.

Easy way to check? I might have an hour later today where I can look at it, then it looks like we'll have rain for the next week and I'd rather not crawl under there while it's wet.

Just look if they’re loose or broken. Last time that happened to me, one of my links was broke.

Cut the wheel left and right and check behind the wheel.

I can appreciate this. Having bought a truck that was neglected due to the fact that it was probably a farm truck, I simply had to replace literally every component, from driveline to suspension. You name it, it's been done. The truck is now smooth and vibe-free. Not the answer you're looking for, but I can say that it can become a tail-chasing experience. When one thing is taken care of, something shows up somewhere else. It gets old. I believe that oftentimes too much time passes between getting things squared away. The problem is, the older components then wear-out the newer ones that much faster. It was all designed to work as a system, so all of it has to be addressed pretty much simultaneously, or else...tail-chasing.

In short, what you're hearing and experiencing could be a number of things, you simply have to check it all.

When I last crawled under it to grease the drive line, I was happily surprised that everything was pretty full and it had been getting greased on a regular basis. Mine was owned by an older couple that used it to tow a trailer around the PNW, frame is pretty damn clean and they were pretty good about servicing it, but it does have about 260K miles. LBJs and timing belt are next on the list of maintenance items. New springs and shocks I'm hoping to put off until the spring, and I figure I'll be replacing a lot of the bushings at the same time.
Gonna check behind the wheels and see if I can see or feel anything that doesn't look right. If I do find anything, hopefully it's something I can do as the same time as the LBJs.

So this is what I found. Sway bar bushing look fine, but the rubber on the sway bar links looks pretty beat up, and the tie rods look kinda worn to me as well. If I have time later or the next time it's not raining, I'll throw a jack under it and lift it up and see if there's any play in anything. Thanks

The link bushings may be worn but that’s not enough to cause the clunk. Definitely take a look at the tie rods though. That’s a potential cause.

 I'm willing to bet that if you and I met, we'd get along very well.

Yes, there's lots of obvious degradation, but I guarantee there is more that is unseen (e.g. lower control arm bushings) that's having an effect. I can appreciate having to piece-meal it, but be aware the next job is waiting. Not cheap, but I bit the bullet and did it all and have no regrets. What you're experiencing could be a number of things. If you plan on keeping the truck, I would just get in there and replace it all in as short a time frame as possible to keep it functioning as a system. Like I said, I went through this, so I get it.
