I wanted to give a shout out to some new things I've been using lately.

American made bungee cords from the Perfect Bungee. They have a lot of different sizes. Seem to be a lot better than the old ones I've used. They advertise them as "Not your Dad's bungee cord".

    0712201338_HDR.jpg

And Adams's Waterless Wash. We've been parking outside since moving and the birds shit on our vehicles every day. Bird Shit can be really bad on paint, even eating the clear coat at times. This allows you to clean it off without scratching the paint.

Those are great! I picked up 4 of them at a local UTV show last winter and they've come in handy to keep different things in place while off-roading. Being able to adjust their size makes them very versatile and they don't seem like they'll dry out like regular bungee cords will.

the silo is solid. thats where old equipment was. The plan as of now is restore the barn (1910) and theres a good chance the barn will become a machine shop. and build a pol barn on the other side for automotive stuff.

inside the barn first time in it looked super rough. but after looking at everything, theres only a small section that is in Bad shape. the rest of the barn is super solid. it was built in 1910 and in 1956 it was moved 2 miles to where it resides now. we now know the full history of the family who owned the farm (they won the irish lottery when they bought it in 1908 from the original farmer who built the first house and the original barn (the original barn was lost to a fire 10 years ago and was where theres a garden now) at the farms peak they had well over 500 acres. but between the 70s and 90s they lost almost everything to gambling till they ended up with the 7.5 acres that my uncle now owns.

the family was directly related to General Joseph Wheeler of the confederate army

I will plan on doing the trans cooler, and drain/fill this coming weekend.

Depending on how much fluid I have left how have you all been draining power steering reservoir?

I haven’t because when I took over maintenance the full drain and fill had recently been done. I’ve just been doing suck and fills to keep it fresher. Having the transmission and PS being the same fluid makes this easy and cheap to do.

Suck and fill from the reservoir? I may need some coaching on the PHM method if no drain method is available. I will peruse the FSM when I return to Loongie 1.

Yes. I use a baster to suck out the fluid from the rez and then refill it. Not as messy and time consuming as disconnecting the lines and turning the wheels back and forth to pump out the fluid technique which is the superior method if your fluid is in bad shape.

Odds are my fluid has never been touched.

What color should it be if its not burnt, or scorched? Or however the hell PS fluid should look.

I’ve seen mine look almost like coffee with a purple red tint in the past. The Power Steering Pump was letting me know the fluid needed changing with a slight whine when turning sharply.

Fresh Fluid looks Ruby Red. Clear. Test in a clear glass or on white paper. Relying on the Rez Color is deceiving as they tend to distort the color due to age fade/staining.

So can't really get a good gauge until after a few "bastings." A full drain/fill on the first go round still seems like a winner. Even if it is a little more work.

Yeah. If yours hasn’t been done in a long time then do the full deal drain and fill. I’ve never seen pics of anyones technique here, so I look forward to yours.

Well, I'll have to figure it out. So far on FSM it states 1.1 US quarts for power steering fluid.

Minimum specc'd pressure on system is 1,209 psi

Keeping in mind that I've never done this on a Tundra. I disconnected the return line, extended it and ran it into a container. Used a kinked piece of hose to plug the reservoir return, removed the serpentine belt, then used a drill to spin the steering pump while a helper added more PS fluid.

You cold do similar with a helper if you pulled the fuel pump relay and just cranked the engine.

Ok. I just buy it in the gallon jugs for $14 versus a quart for $7?

Seems like you can disconnect one of your Lines at the Rez and drop it in a bucket. Plug that rez hole. Turn the wheels jacket off the ground with engine off:D. Fill rez and repeat until clear.

Dex/Merc Valvoline. Use the extra on your transmission.

Having never done this full drain and fill I wonder if substituting the wheel turning for your drill turning does the same thing. I like your drill idea as it seems like the full system would be flooded better.

I have the gallon. I was going to do drain/fill of transmission first. No need to drop the pan because I do not want to snap those pan bolts. Although I am curious of internals.

Question I have. When I remove my redneck transmission cooler, and install the OEM cooler from @lsaami will I need to add more than 4 to account for the cooler?

Hmmm. This will require thinking, and planning.

My usual helper just likes to look at the trees. Which is fine because it keeps him from playing video games all the time.

Not sure, but you’ll figure it out based on the dipstick. My OEM cooler is not that big. Don’t see it holding a lot of fluid.

The OEM cooler is the one going on. I didn't figure it held much either. I did think it was a good question to ask though.

You'll still need to work the run the steering wheel back and forth to get all the fluid out of the rack but the pump needs to be spinning to move the fluid through the system.

I pull the return line, hook a longer line to it and purge all the old fluid by turning
The wheel with the truck off. Then fill back up and bleed
