Red is normal for lots of movement in two situations:
    • You have both front wheels jacked up at the same time
    • Your rack bushings are worn, soft, or shot
Like, currenty, with my truck on a roll-on alignment rack I can grab the wheel with the full weight of the truck on it at red and move it and see the whole rack move. And I feel that out on the street also, things are a bit drifty, although part of that is purely the shit caster choices the shop I went to chooses.

when they do 'break' you'll have stripped the threads and need a rack.

Ah. That's probably my issue then. Let me try one at a time tomorrow.

FWIW though, it doesn't explain the popping. That's the larger concern IMO. You really need to isolate that...

The sort of movement when you have both front wheels off the ground (yes, I’ve made that stupid mistake years ago in the past). :D

With the steering wheel locked because it was in park with the key off, i also wedge a funny shaped stick under a steering wheel spoke to the floor.

You may want to consider jacking up under the LCA also, so there's load on the suspension while doing it. Or maybe not. I've seen people jack at the frame and at the LCA.

I do the LCA for simplicity. Only problem is you don’t see play in the LCA bushings that way.

I thought he said pops while not turning though.

His LCA are relatively new though, so I figured it's worthwhile for him.

The CV axles look fine. Boots are still looking new. I suspected them initially. I agree the noise is a concern. I'm stumped. It could be the SPC upper ball joints right? I suspect those won't last as long as OEM but I've greased them at proper intervals.

I also don't get why the noise seems to go away after a few minutes of driving.

I get a lot of play from the rubber coupler in the steering shaft I’m pretty sure, after a new rack it still did the same and sounded the same, it seems weird for it to be that noisy if it’s rubber?

If it's happening only when turning at low speed, it's the CV axles. Maybe you slung all the grease out. But the joint is failing either way.

Mine still look good, but definitely have play in them.

Slow turn in a parking lot, turning after a full stop are typically when popping happens with failing CVs, IME.

I'm going to go against the grain here, I would just swap out the inners. Steering rack replacement is a PITA. Get the lifetime alignment, so if or when the time comes you aren't out any extra.

ETA- got caught up. Guess it's not against the grain
