Fail how? I’m still using my original OEM skid plate and bolts after 21 years in the same bolt holes. Only requires used oil or WD-40 to keep them from seizing after time. Or is it a different type of fail?

The welds that hold the nuts inside the frame really aren't that great. For me, it's not the bolts seizing that seems to cause the problems, hard driving over time caused the welds to go. The skid plates made noise for me when they went.

In the front cross member, there is no way to get a wrench inside there to hold the nut when the welds go, so it's a pain getting it out unless you cut the bolt head and push the thread inside the cross member.

Yeah I should have clarified. I only have the front and oil pan skid right now. I would like to cover the transmission next and also add the cat guards.

The logical next step would be to order those from Skid Row.

Yeah, maybe, rather than replace. I bought the Skid Row add-ons from DJenerated, but haven't installed and may not. More weight to deal with when removing plates. Still considering.

Among my considerations is, the likelihood that thieves would target a veh as old as ours. When newer vehicles are generally available, with more of what they want.

Will try. Had just enough time to get them unloaded out of my pickup and put into my shed and start to mentally inventory. Got called out of town on a work trip that will last a few days. Will go through them later and upload photos. Was thinking of a kind of "mystery tool" photo sort, of like a trivia game, or just photos of the old tools. I don't know what some of this stuff does.

Not particularly, had most of what I needed, but not the organizational space and definitely not complete sets. And there's all the "little stuff" in here that I've always wanted but have always done without. Oil filter wrenches, u-joint socket adapters, ALL kinds of extensions, socket adapters that size up and down, picks, puller tools, seal presses, a remote starter, tiny little-ass files, dental mirror, telescoping magnetic rods, like all that kind of stuff. Like it filled in a lot of the gaps in my tool kit if that makes sense.

These Craftsman cabinets don't appear to have the ball bearing drawers--seem to be the lubricated rails that slide--but I will check, it was dark when I put them in my shed.

And on the torque wrench, it turns out there was only one torque wrench, I must have been overly excited and confused it with some socket wrenches and breaker bars it was mixed in with. Will get some pics taken when I'm back at it this weekend. Overall I'm very jazzed about figuring out what some of this crap is and how I can use it to suck less at wrenching.

Also! Good news on the 1999 Ranger front. Removed the whole freakin' dash to check the ignition switch--that's good but is getting replaced anyway. The issue seems to be that, in the positive battery cable loom, about a foot down from the battery, there is a short--if you shake the wires there, power comes on. Thank God the wipers were set to on and the wiggle and squeeze every wire-looking thing test made them kick on. Just need to unwrap that area and hopefully it's nothing too crazy like a full harness replacement.

Nice! Now lift the front. And update your damn 'Vehicle one line description' in your profile to include the year, cab type (RC/DC/AC), 4WD/2WD, and V8 or V6, MT or AT if it's a V6 :D

Hahaha I meant to update that last night

It has icons on the front and rear. Ironically I think the front is already cranked all the way up. I’ll check and mess with that more in a week or so

Sounds like corrosion inside the cable. Happy to see Ferds aren't immune to that one either. Mark the spot, I'd be curious to see what it looks like when the sheath comes off later.

Meh, nobody respectable uses oil filter wrenches. Unless it's a vehicle that uses a filter element vs. a can-style filter. /s

On passenger vehicles you should never need more than a little dab of oil on the seal and firmly hand tight.

Breaker bars are super bonus though! I don't even have one. I use a cheater pipe, 2-3ft section of copper pipe, slides over most of my ratchets perfectly.

It may just be the terrain. I'm seeing now, it looks like the ground is higher at the psgr front wheel versus driver.

I have a simple strap wrench for stubborn filters.

everyone should have a 2’ long 1/2” drive breaker bar in their arsenal. Game changer. A set of 6 sided sockets is a plus too.

When you run into difficulties with a job, having the right tool makes all the difference. Saves time and money from whatever shade tree fix you’ll likely come up with. Every new job is an excuse to buy a new tool that’s needed. Even if it’s just a specific socket size, or funny connector wrench.
