Can any of you network guys school me on fiber internet? I have TDS but pay $10/mo for their fiber to Ethernet converter box. Having a hard time finding what I need. Bought a Ubiquiti Ufiber box but it doesn’t work. I’m told I don’t need TDS to authorize my box but I may call them anyways. Can’t find the box that tds uses either. Apparently I need a single mode GPON connection and obviously an RJ45 Jack??

Not a network guy but I understand some of the lingo. Two types of fiber transmission, single mode and multi-mode. Single mode typically uses a 1310 nm wavelength and multi-mode uses a 850 nm wavelength, so you need the right type of optical transceiver to handle it. GPON (gigabit passive optical network) I haven't used but it allows you to use a passive splitter for a multi-point destination instead of a more expensive active device.

I'm not sure of the type of optical connectors used here since it's not stated unless GPON requires a specific type per it's standard. I'm only familiar with LC and SC myself. Just my two cents.

Ok, that all makes sense with what I've read. Here is what the TDS box looks like if that helps at all.

Got a link to the spec on the Ubiquiti Ufiber box? That might help in understanding the problem why it isn’t working for you unless you already know why it’s not compatible.

I don't know why it's not compatible. Here is the link and how to change it's settings: https://dl.ubnt.com/guides/ufiber/UF-LOCO_QSG.pdf

The neighbor down the street, after the kids were gone, the wife passed, & he'd gotten old - he took to walking. At 2:30/3:00am he'd wake up, put on his bathrobe & slippers & walk around the neighborhood, or down into town... Po Po learned to keep an eye out & bring him home. Not senile, just bored.

It’s not obvious. It supposedly meets the G.984 standard for GPON. I don’t know much about the OLT profiles. Is there one listed for what TDS uses?

The one TDS uses is Calix GigaPoint 803G. When I called their support he told me they don't have a specific list of 'modems' to use but I should buy one 'that's similar to theirs' lol. Stupid. I'm gonna call them and see if they could be of any help but I'm doubting it.

You can always buy the Calix GigaPoint 803G on eBay for under $100 if you have no other solutions. Looks like there’s a seller that sells them new.

EDIT: So after calling, they show that I've had a rented ROUTER on my account. They don't charge for the ONT (converter box) but at least my bill going forward will be $10 cheaper.

you can stop trying to help me know lol, but I appreciate the info and effort!

    Boat update-

I haven’t had much time to work on it, I’ve been in Oregon on college visits for the past four days. Really cool place.

Back to the boat motor… I had to “rebuild” most of the engine-side wiring harness, as it was super corroded and would crumble to nothing if you touched it at all. Got that reinstalled.

I am also switching to a modern coil, rectifier, and CDI box, as the ones from 1968 are $500+ and have no guarantee that they work. Because of this, I have to fabricate new mounts for almost all of the ignition components. Not difficult but time consuming.

Still have to make a mount for the starter solenoid. Also- most of the hardware I’m using are single-use aircraft grade nuts and bolts from the late 60s, when my grandpa was an Air Force mechanic. I’ve got hundreds of 1/4-20 stainless bolts.

I’m also swapping the distributor driveshaft for a different one, as this will allow me to use slightly less rare and expensive parts. This is a terribly time consuming project and of course, it isn’t going smoothly. I’ll spare you all the explanation but the distributor shaft bearings should slide right on… and of course they don’t. Not even after I put the shaft in the freezer for the afternoon. We’ll see what happens.

So yeah, that’s where we are. Engine cranks, but no spark because there’s no distributor. Still not close, but closer. 14 days to go.

Nothing better than owning a boat in college. I’ve only owned one with an outboard motor. Sold that one in 2015 or so for more than I paid for it a decade before. Embarrassed to say I never worked on it, as I had a friend that worked at a marine repair shop. I know I had to buy a new power pack for it and it was spendy. Is that what you are getting rid of on yours?

Here’s a picture, it was a 75 Glastron I bought from the original owner. Thing was pretty mint when I bought it. Wish I would have kept the motor, as it ran like a scalded ape:

Yup. Power pack, switch box, CDI, they're all pretty much the same thing: a super simple computer that tells the plugs when to fire. None of them are cheap, and they're the biggest pain to diagnose, as internal problems can be intermittent based on temperature, run time, a variety of things. I dealt with lots of power pack issues with the engine I had previously, which coincidentally was almost identical to the motor you had. I don't want to deal with those things on this engine, and it's significantly cheaper to buy the modern equivalents.

The engine I had before was a Johnson 85 horse, which used the same block as your 135, but with different carbs, heads, and exhaust. Hated that thing. Never ran right no matter how hard I tried. "Accidentally" overheated it and wore out two cylinders pretty fast. Sold it for $250.

Well damn, I missed out here :D

I've been running around like a chicken with its head cutoff since about 12:25 today. Went to the store to pick up a handful of 12TB drives at the store, only to come back to a global meltdown because someone (as we found 4 hours later) let a damn PKI certificate expire

Sounds like you got it squared away. I don't need to go into a schpeel about how the provider should have a fiber to copper conversion box, or in the super rare case they expect you to use fiber, there are a bajillion diff't types of SFPs and cables you can get, and even more adapters, and you need to give more info :D
