Nice! Question for you: How'd you get your holes so clean in the gussets you center-punched for drill out? They look perfect, deburred, clean-beveled, and no sign of how it was done.

Never had Chevy in my Garage before. Helping my friend replace both CV axles, front brakes, and all diff/TCase fluids. His 05 Silverado is nearly mint with 80k miles.

His axles are a different design so they are extremely easy to swap.

Are you actually measuring and moving your mill per measurement or just centering the bit on your scribe marks?

I’m centering on the little punch marks. With the power off I drop the chuck and turn the chuck backwards by hand holding some down pressure. Makes a new mark/pocket onsite or at the punch mark. When I raise it I look carefully to see if the bit moves in any direction. I’ll clock the bit and check from the front and side as I pull down with gentle pressure and raise again. Let me know if that doesn’t make sense, I can better illustrate it.

Makes sense to me! Wish I had some more precision tools like that!

at work usually I’ll set it with a punch, then hand drill a 1/8” pilot, go to the drill press, get it close in a similar fashion as you, and then just send it and let it self center hahaha

I do the freehand punch, 1/8” pilot, drill usually with oil all the time if it’s getting a bolt or grommet or something. The power tools I use all the time for making stuff are that 2x72 belt sander you saw, the mini mill, 9” disc grinder, porta band in a vice.

Hopefully you have some mediocre drill bits;)

9” disc grinder? Like bench mounted or a actual hand grinder? That’s a big boy!

When I was making knives, I got the ultimate mounted disc grinder.. and I was lucky enough to know a crazy good machinist who made me two steel discs that are perfectly true and balanced. You can’t find those off the shelf

Apparently GM doesn't put a drain plug on the rear differential. You have to remove the entire cover.

yeah that's standard practice for the big 3. Fords are the same way, so are Dodge. Most of the axles are made by Dana anyways.

You need to upgrade to an aftermarket cover to “add” the drain plug.

Or maybe drill your own? :notsure:

Hey! I have those same Wilton vise clamp pads.

Meanwhile though, I sorted through the next batch of stuff to re-org in the basement and came across these fun finds. These all have to be at least 20 years old, probably more like 30. EDIT: OK, so Future Primitive is clearly more like 40. FUCK I'm getting old.

Junkyard visit for a hood, fenders, if you feel like welding the core support isn’t terrible to replace. Pull the aprons back… or just pull it all and toss new panels on. Damage is all high so the frame rails should be straight still my 06 rails were straight as an arrow after it’s nasty wreck.

Well damn brotha, color me impressed. You ever hook a bottle up to your machine? I mean, not sayin anything is wrong with what you're doin, but if you're doin that well with flux-core, you'd really make some pretty stuff with a gas shield.
