He seems to be doing good. He's replacing most of his brake components on the Tundra and driving his Golf a lot.

More sh*t to tinker with for $100. Two 90% working; one for parts. Really should’ve bargained for a foot pedal and light. Oh well.

    ^^ Nice!

Did Darkness get the boot? No line in his username. I thought he faded away maybe? but how can black fade? :)

My approach to getting tasks done is maybe best called the "kook" method. Jump in the water and yell really loud then paddle around till you're tired trying to find the peak. Eventually you'll get tired and settle in and catch some waves. You'll also get a good workout and each day will feel totally different than the last b/c there's no method to repeat.

In the garage that basically means starting whatever first comes to mind based on visual cues or just pick a random something. Then, while doing that work, you'll see 2 or 3 other things related to it or inspired by it. Start some of those, maybe not all. As time allows, extend outward in this tangled web of projects and complete an arm or a series of arms on a tentacle. As the end of the day approaches, attempt to finish the first task for ultimate satisfaction. Sometimes it may require buttoning things up for tomorrow and sometimes the act of buttoning may lead to other projects. Always expect an extra 1-2h after you're "done" to go back and improve.

That's pretty much how my last full day of truck mods went. Extremely satisfying really. This type of intellectual freedom might be seen as undisciplined by many/most and that's OK with me. I consider it true freedom, like an artist painting (only my stuff is far from art.)

@daveeasa @Darkness decided he wasn’t going to return. Now he just pops up from time to time on TS to talk about his latest guitar acquisition and upgrade.

Unfortunately the activity on TS is super low. Just not the resource this place is. Was a member there from way back before I found this forum.

The UI is really crappy on TS and the ads are nonstop but there’s little to no moderation.

I really tried to TS another shot during the great migration, for old times sake. Was the go to back in the day. It’s a ghost town these days. Glad this forum exists. Great peeps with great knowledge and advice here.

I’m just surprised the 1st gen trucks have been popular for over 20 years now and people still get excited about owning one.

Had I bought that 99 2-door Chevy Tahoe I was originally seeking, it’s popularity would have died off 10 years ago.

Before grandpa bought the tundra we went to the new car show in downtown houston, sat in all the junk, and i had him convinced grandma NEEDED a biturbo 2.7 audi, and was trying to talk him into the redesigned dodge that i think was still available with the 5.9 magnum. Luckily, he was a wiser man than I, and ordered the tundra and a lexus rx300 for grandma.

Pics or I don't believe it.

I mean, it doesn't get any easier than swapping a genIII engine into another GM truck/van. There's almost always a compatible mounting solution, and a lot of times, the engine ends up being situated right where it needs to be... I haven't participated in an GenIII swap since 2017-2018 around the time I was offloading my last Sierra, I'm probably overdue at this point... definitely feeling the itch...

Depends on the year. Starting in the late 70s/early 80s, the first few iterations of mostly-plastic interiors went pretty poorly for GM. Problem is, the dashes are usually intact if you buy from up north but the chassis are rusty af. If you buy a clean chassis from down south, the summer heat has destroyed all the interior plastics. And dash-swapping sucks ass, finding uncracked dashes is a bitch. Good example below, from my old truck I just mentioned, a '98 Sierra - they didn't get a handle on this problem until a few years into the GMT800 platforms (roughly mid-2000s)

Other problem is, GM was having a shitload of problems with their seam sealers and foams throughout all the 1990s and into the 2000s too. Cowl leaks and cab leaks galore, windshield rot, mildew, it was pretty bad. I had to re-seal so much stuff along the cowl and firewall in that '98, I couldn't keep water out of it. Turns out a foam seal you can't get to, inside the cowl, around the fresh air intake box, went to shit. No reasonable way to replace it correctly, either, without taking the dash out. But it's already caused mildew to set in, and started rusting up the passenger floorboard.

Here's a shining example of plastics for 80s/90s GM trucks after being in the south their whole life - and this is after I replaced all the smaller plastics:

Worst part is, trying to find a replacement dash is virtually impossible. There's nothing you can buy NOS or even new-aftermarket except dash caps, which you glue on. It does nothing to hold the dash together though, so then you end up with rattles as pieces break off and fall inside the dash, or if you're lucky, onto the floorboard.

A lot of this is due to UV exposure and failure to protect the dash. That truck (pictured) had previously been a lakeside boat hauler which sat in the sun all day every day, and rarely got washed/waxed much less any protectant on the dash. Then a guy who built waterscapes and in-ground garden ponds got it, and used it strictly for hauling supplies to occasional jobs. If you look closely, only 90k miles on the clock. Not like that's road wear on the dash. It's just shitty plastics formulas and/or poor structural design combined with southern sun, heat, and UV.

Dodge had it bad too, but Ford isn't exactly free and clear either. I don't think I've ever seen anything like this in a Toyota, and I've only seen similar in the old Honda CVCCs, but Honda was doing that weird steel-base-with-vinyl-topped-foam dash thing through the 80s. My '87 Civic had that. Worst that usually happened with those, the foam would lift up at the vents with age.

A carbon fiber dash replacement would fix that problem. UV proof, but very expensive.

Lots of peripheral stress fractures throughout.

At least it's not like the dash I showed. I got a dash mat to cover it and tried not to think about it. Then it cracked up to the cluster, and there's only so much a dash mat can cover.

    Stone cold stock
@Jack McCarthy Planning on pulling the Bedliner and bed off my truck here pretty soon. How many bolts do you think I should buy? There's 8 total, but a hundred bucks on bolts doesn't get my motor running. My trucks Frame is in good shape, but has some sneaky rust on bolts here and there. Guess what I'm saying, is worse case scenario?
