People wrote lots of funny notes in mine. Main reason I kept it.

That, and if you went to high school where I did, you knew at least 50% of your graduating class would be in prison or in the ground within 10yrs.

The other 50% who didn't manage to make it out of town would be on their 2nd or 3rd spouse with multiple kids between both, or no spouse and multiple kids.

I managed to get out, but not before getting dragged into some shit that left me realizing if I didn't flee, I'd definitely land in one of those two.

I miss my home town. Half my friends made it back. I haven’t. Yet. If I skipped kids I’d have a chance but even then I’d be in trouble on the housing front.

Oh, college, hah, those people aren't typically worth caring about for me. I'm talking about my 7-12th grade friends. We're still a decently tight group but those who are home are tighter than those who only visit once a year or two.

Damn, are you sure we didn't grow up in the same place?

I got out. Scathed. But I got out. And honestly, I sure as hell hope 99.9% of the people from back then never manage to find me.

I've slowly watched shit unravel back there over the decades. I finally threw my hands up in the air, giving up, when the teenage son of a cringey dude (nowadays aka "incel") I briefly hung out with back in the day killed my ex-g/f. Still no clue why, though I'm sure if I asked around I could probably find the story, just don't want to get sucked back in. She was the sweetest person on the planet, not even sure how she ended up with such a POS, but it's a small pool to fish in back there. I suspect she was about to go to the police about how he was likely diddling his kids, then told the son she was going to help try to get him away, and the son "took care of the problem".

That's just a drop in the bucket. I'd write a book about the countless other shit I saw, but seriously doubt anyone would believe it. Rough ass adolescent/late teen life.

Not far from where the vampire murders happened. Her details are unrelated to that case, but the fact both happened within single-digit miles of one another is just proof positive morbid shit is endemic for middle-Floridistan.

I lived there long enough, hung out within 1-degree, 2-degrees separation from a lot of the worst you'll read about in the news. I don't believe in dark voodoo type shit, but if I did, I'd swear the middle of that damn state is cursed. Built on a burial ground or something.

Yeah, screw that, I don't want to be 26 again.

I dunno how many others would tell you this, but, like, 28-35 were probably the best years of my life. I'd go back and relive them again in a heartbeat. By the time you top out your 30s and hit the 40s, life gets pretty pedestrian (grind). By the time you're in your 50s, you're basically working out how quickly you can get to retirement, fuck off and do all the stuff you always wanted to do but haven't. I dunno about the 60s yet. But my parents are finally both in their 70s and all they do is that, fuck off and do all the stuff they always wanted to do, with shitloads of doctor visits in between.

    I got there too.

There was this weird lull post-college-years for me too. I had a damn blast from 21-24, once I got far enough out of shitville to have a normal life. but by 24, everyone was graduating, moving abroad, starting families, and the disconnections started.

That's what forced me to focus on me, my life, my career, and take some risks that ultimately paid off, and put me in place to have a wild ass ride all over the world on my employer's dime from roughly 28-35. That pretty much stopped with kid #1, and life kicked into a new gear or stage.

The cool part about 21-24 is that me and most of my friends had jobs, and enough money to piss away on wild adventures, but lax enough jobs that we could stay out til 3-4am every night and still function at 80-90% the next day.

The cool part about 28-35 is jobs were way better, paid more, so there was more money to go on crazy adventures abroad, with new people I'd met, building new friendships on those adventures. Sad to lose some old friends though.

I can't think of much cool that happened after 35. Finding someone awesome enough to marry was cool. Having kids was pretty incredible, and watching them evolve into humans I'd actually enjoy hanging out with has been pretty cool too.

But I'd still love to go back and relive 28-35 again. I'd do it harder the 2nd go-round.

It is interesting how you develop pre-conceived ideas about people's ages from how they act/type on a forum like this, as well as looks/gender etc if they don't list it on their profiles. A couple of u are definitely younger than I thought lol

I hope you never stop buying shitboxes, @empty_lord ! I wish I had your family background. I’m a guy who wanted to be where you are now when I was that age but I had no mentors to learn from.

Ironically, I got shot down trying to mentor my 7 year old on grating cheese this morning. Wife wants to praise him for helping (OK, cool, I get that) and he doesn't want any help figuring it out. I dunno, parenting, it's strange.
