Are these people using a specific brand that's failing?

Could just be the shit design a lot of aftermarkets are using isn't engineered for the LCA angles Toyota uses on these trucks. It could also be the ones that are failing are all coming from warehouses in China using pot metal (or other inferior steel) to cast their parts. Or a combination of both.

Yea the ones will last 200k miles unless lifted. Aftermarket’s your lucky to get 50k stock height, less lifted

Factory at 212k? Damn, my OEMs only last 80-90k on average. I’m on my third set and my truck is bone stock.

I’ve yet to replace my original UBJs at 240k.

The V6s lasted like 270K or something like that. Crackies had been changed to some bastard brand that had a nylock nut on the ball joint stud instead of a castle with a cotterpin.

Rust belt of course. Not sure how that would be an issue though.

I must be the unlucky one here although my first set was replaced under the recall around 90k, the next set at 175k because one was leaking grease. Third set seems to be okay so far.

I think we can probably just agree, at the time Toyota was making these trucks, they were over-engineering just about everything. Hence the reliability.

There's a myriad of reasons Toyota is a household name, while most aftermarket parts manufacturers aren't. I'm sure this is just one.

    Hmmn.

I always assume it’s the bolts, all these failures we see— because that’s what failed on mine… at about ~218k.

So I, uh, got all new OEM hardware… and … um… put the OEM LBJ’s back on. So… yeah. :anonymous:

I'm not sure how well this will work as a screenshot from mobile, but his is definitely NOT a bolt failure.

Mine were replaced under the warranty at 43k then I did them and the studs at 150k, 170k currently.

This post does a good job of covering how the LBJs and the studs are weak point on our vehicles:

Bolts are an issue. I don’t reuse them 04 and older. 05-06 have beefier bolts. Way less of a risk of failure

But will those fit the older LBJ’s?

Don’t get me wrong: I won’t do another bolt swap; next time, I’ll swap out the LBJ’s. But I… and internet searchers in future… want to know.

I thought Toyota had a recall on the ball joints? I also thought the later first gens had an improved ball joint design.

fast. Only caught a glance. Looked like an attractive small / medium truck. Properly beefy. Jacked up just right.
Was early rush hour, so traffic was tight, by the time I saw the tailgate, check it out time was pretty much over. ;-\

Sounds like a good upgrade for older 1GT to me!

Hell, if I had unlimited budget, I'd have everything custom fabricated. If only... buy me lottery ticket, G.
