PS - on those measures, you'll find AC is maybe a tad diff't between 2WD/4WD.

    Here's a ballpark on my stock 4WD:

Hub center to fender (passenger side): 22.25" rear, 20.5" front
Floor to fender: 36" rear, 34.25" front

Add ~0.25" for driver side and note my gas tank was 80% empty when measuring.

Moving this non-specific/rando topic over to Lunch thread to keep the What Have You Done thread a bit more pure.

Black Uhuru. Specifically, listen to True Democracy.

Honestly, sounds like a 14yo Jack Black. After inhaling a little helium. Dead-on.

I'm sad and maybe a little disappointed y'all had to look this one up. :D Roland's 303, 808, and 909 were crucial to music, especially electronica and hip hop. Countless references to the 808 in songs, I'm sure. One that pops right to mind is Sir Mix-a-lot's 'My Posse's on Broadway', "... the 808 kick drum makes the girlies get dumb". Run DMC, LL, Beastie Boys, and plenty of of others were using it back in the day but not before Herbie Hancock and even Marvin Gaye.

The 303, 808, and 909 were the basis of Propellerheads' ReBirth software we used to use for video tracks back in the day until Roland sued a few years ago. Lots of history there if you want a rabbithole over coffee or beer. And more than that, here's a small playlist of classic 808 tracks to accompany your reading.

FWIW, if you have at least some basic understanding of networking, and you're a solid spatial thinker, Fortinet offers free training online, and passing their first 4 certs (I finished all 4 over a 3-day weekend) and tossing yourself on LinkedIn is enough to get you in entry-level with how hot the cybersec world is these days. Palo Alto and Fortinet are two focus areas I'd aim for if I were coming green into the industry, and note jobs there aren't limited to network stuff, but there's a lot of focused interest on intrusion prevention, detection, and forensics right now.

Security is crazy hot. Our guy who came and left had the credentials and surely got tons of cash to talk and make documents and PowerPoints. Think he had a C level title even, kid was younger than me by a lot, green to cycling. It was funny.

Personally I’d be miserable doing that kind of bs. Pushing paper around and filling out vendor surveys.

But I’m pretty miserable doing anything in IT I’d say. It’s just a miserable place to be. An endless stream of other peoples problems feeding an ocean of wealth, entitlement and incompetence. The few who can solve problems are pulling on the oars but all the boats are sinking, some faster than others.

That's such a small subset of it, though. Like 0.00001% of people will ever hit C-level. Anything middle-mgmt and downward is too busy doing the real work so those other guys can push paper and show face.

Not gonna lie, I think you nailed every industry there. The trick to IT industry as a whole is to find the niche where you fit and jump in.

Like to fix stuff for people? Aim for a role in IT Support.
Like to architect things, design solutions? Aim for a role in Cloud Engineering or IT Business Analyst.
Great with spatial thinking and traffic design/architecture? Aim for a role in Network Engineering.
Like to focus on one product or suite of tools and help people adapt and use it in their environment? Aim for Customer Success Engineer.
Geek out on security and incident response? You'll probably want to look into the cybersec world.
Geek out on finding holes? Keep eyes out for Pentesting jobs, etc. etc.

There's just so much damn stuff to do, it's almost impossible not to find something you can enjoy.

I found my niche as a "System engineer", but I basically do almost every job in the list above in my daily 9-5 (and far more)

Yeah to some degree but all those spots have uselessness combined with the one guy who solves problems. Or maybe there is a woman who does 250% of the work of most of the dudes and you wonder why she is willing to do all that.

I dunno, so many people just passing notes in class "client says X is broken" without adding any value and saying "I'm not a technical resource". That's what gets me down. Lots of people aren't really trainable. The few that are, it's a big effort to get them learned and once they learn, they find something better comp-wise.

I think you may be in the glass-half-empty camp. I tend to hang out in the the-glass-is-a-lie camp.

But I definitely hear you, and I'll be the first to say: You're definitely not wrong!

What you describe is the reality at a lot of places. In some places, it's that way by design, everyone under-working so when multiple people go on overlapping vacation, there's plenty left to carry the weight. Other places, it's poor management that fails to bother with KPI, or maybe even it's poor management combined with crappy HR failing to create cultural balance, or allowing toxic environments where everything is lopsided.

We used to have a kickass work environment. As cybersecurity has sort of enveloped everything, and even taken over a large segment of our business portfolio, what you've just laid out is the norm within multiple companies in our group. Some of the weirdest damn people I've met in my 25yr stint in technology, and some of the most misogynistic, bro-culture, crony BS too.

I don't want to be that older dude who is, like, "back in my day...!" but things were definitely better when I was entering the tech industry in my mid-ish 20s.

Yeah, there are moments in startup culture where that olden day feeling can be had. Before all the people who worked for it get screwed over by the suits who come in once the money flows. I’ve done 5 or 6 such rounds of that cycle. I dig the early days. Like a puppy though, it can’t last. And once it turns, so does my stomach.

I have the next gig planned but hoping there is some sort of finish line here. Almost everyone else has left by now. Just a few old timers and a lot of green who don’t know things. Longest I’ve ever stayed put, I think kids do that to you.

Yep on the startup front. That's what happened to me. We, as a startup of less than 30 people got snatched up by a European that was making acquisitions to more-rapidly grow out of their startup phase. Seen both sides of the fence. Watched peers go through the same.

And on that bold/italic part. Hits close to home. Yes, having a family does that. Providing that stable platform though, it's what allowed my wife to get out and crush her way up the corporate ladder, which has provided a huge windfall. I don't mind. Just a few more years ... and I can sit on here all day long when I'm not wrenching on something elsewhere...

Do you guys really want us to celebrate your birthdays? If you do, we can make it a Thing here in the 1st gen forum. :bananadead:
I mean, there are currently, like, 8 of us participating regularly, with about 15 that post occasionally. We could potentially do real world meet ups with actual cake. Say, and we’ll make it so.

Edit: cake dancers. Whatever. You tell us what you need to feel celebrated as you get old on your birthday.

I love that you lay it out. And, I am impressed. I think the sad truth is that we don't want to celebrate our birthdays, we just childishly notice when our birthdays aren't noticed. Ironically, I'm sure at our/my age we missed every other birthday on here. I did get a Gen2 once or twice, lol. So, happy year to me, I'm throwing a party. It's private. :monocle:

As for today today - I had to go to some mind numbing training in Pasadena. I also farmed it and had to swing by my work location at Santa Monica first to get my uniform shit. Buddy is like, "you're not taking the work truck?" Naw, I'd rather drive my own. Gas prices be damned.

Alright. Let’s figure out what you’d like us to do, using this example:
Ideally, this would have been 2 posts*. Because it’s not, let’s break it down.
Great ^ post. Apropos of nothing, you mention positive attributes about yourself, and make it ok by reminding us we are part of the small group of you. You also stick to irrefutable facts. No one could argue. I mean…, in this thread, we might all argue just to argue… but if we did we’d be wrong. Plus… if another gen type wandered in here… it’s a well-laid trap… ‘cause they might think you were boasting, and imply that, then the rest of us could jump all over it and chase ‘em out. So again, playing to your in-group (that’s us).

    But. what is this-?

I can’t figure it out. And I get that the earlier bit was the set up for this bit, which makes this the point of the post. But what does it mean?
