Sweet. Just in case and to be more specific than I was before. Black wires to gold screws. White wires to silver screws. Bare wire to green screw. And turning off the breaker is a good idea :)

Is it best to break the tabs on the new box or just bend them? Or does it not matter?

I'm trying to improve my mangler tendencies.

The tabs are to remain. When you tighten the screws, the top and bottom flappers pop up and along with the outside tabs help compress and hold box in place.
Too bad the original install did not be on one piece of siding. Proper water proofing is going to be difficult to say the least. Something like the below would have been better for weather proofing.

edit....they either used 1/2 blackboard, plywood or insulation board behind siding. The siding is roughly 1/2 where tabs, so you need to make sure the flapper screws are backed as far as possible so that when they reposition vertical instead of horizantal there is a space wide enough for siding and material behind siding. Also make sure to push insulation upwards/downwards so it does not interfere with flappers going vertical.

It’s normal for ground wires to be twisted together. Untwist to remove the box.

bend new tabs but leave them, they secure wire from pulling out the back.

use a GFCI if you can or a waterproof cover if not able to, best to have both if you are nuts and enjoy wasting money like me.

ideal is white to white x 3 and black to black x 3 then the 3rd white and black feed then outlet. Vs pushing into the back and using the outlet to daisy chain. Pigtails make the install a little easier. I like using side screws more than push in but both are fine.

yellow wire nuts should handle 3x14 but if it’s 12 gauge you might need red for 3. That’s one extra complication with the pigtail approach.

ideally try to remove the ground crimp without cutting the long wire since it’s easier to do the same way if you have new crimps. That can be hard though. You can always cut and crimp the end back on as a triple.

I probably did not explain this well. Wish I had an after picture for you to look at. You can also use tin snips to cut the yellow box out without messing with the wire so you have more space to work with before installing the blue.

Just pop the breaker and don't kill yourself.
This being an outdoor circuit you should be either using a GFCI outlet, or the supply breaker should be a GFCI breaker.

    Good luck!

Yeah this is definitely not ideal. It is a GFCI receptacle and a waterproof cover but it could have been done better. I'm just glad the whole box doesn't pull out of the wall now. I may throw some caulk around the edges of the hardie siding.

Thanks everyone for the help! Love this place.

Looks nice. Silicone caulk would finish it off. I like clear for this situation. You can also find color matched at specialty stores.

Okay I’ll be the guy.. Its crooked.
    Not important.
Seriously tho, you do not have that set correctly. You should not be able to see the metal tabs on the receptacle. The inner cover plate should be tight around the receptacle, with a foam seal as well. Definitely caulk around the box with a sealant, after you re-set the receptacle.

It is crooked but I can't do anything about how they cut the siding. I tried straightening it but don't see how I can fix it. The whole thing could have been done better.

I'm missing that inner cover completely. I just need to buy a new bubble cover and start over. I don't think it's ever going to hug it like it should though since they have it splitting two pieces of siding.

Please do. I'll have cold beer waiting.

Various ways to do it differently but this is how I did ours on the deck. You could put your carpenter mangler skills to a test or have a rib rack and a few cold ones ready and I could be there in 5 hrs from west Tn

Make sure and seal it up well if you make the hole bigger. Don't want any rats getting in the house

Fortunate and blessed to be raised by a Dad in construction. Had to learn all the skills, from the ridge row to the footings. I had my painter, carpenter and electrician hat on that day :hattip:

Okay, the receptacle goes in against the box before the cover. You have the receptacle outside of it. Anyways, The quick and easy fix for the siding is to add a piece of siding, 6-8” long, and ripped to the height of your siding overlap, notch it out for the bottom half of the box, and butt it up against the bottom of the upper siding.
In other words, install a small piece of siding under the bottom half of the box, then it will lay flat against the house, and be easier to achieve a good seal.
    Just tryin to help.

Need to rename it to "Yeetenwood" with how badly packages get yeeted around the place. I got the package today, and I think I understand why it got held back. When the package got here, had a huge gash down the side of it where it looks like it got stuck in something for a while. Contents undamaged, thankfully, it was super-overpacked.

Ditto here, for the most part, but if you were like me, I reckon you didn't feel that way once or twice along the way.

My Dad grew up building houses b/c family was too poor to pay anyone to do it, and that ended up being all he did after school for money. When he graduated HS, USN 20yrs (airplane hydraulics, P3, E2). Worked as a machinist after making control cabinets for military contractor for a decade, then became a GC.

I cursed the hell out of him more times than I can tell you along the way, and his dad too for all the welding and labor he made me do starting around age 5, but both made sure I knew firsthand how to frame, wire, and plumb an entire house, plus wrench on my own stuff, and weld from an early age.

I hated it. But I love how much money it saves me these days, and if I'm being brutally honest, probably a significant part of the reason my wife wanted to marry me.

I'm guessing they bounced power to another outlet after and you had two pieces of Romex coming into the box, one being a supply line, the other going to the next box?

Looks like you got it anyway, everyone had good input to share. I was always taught as long as you have a GFCI at the first outlet in the circuit (from the panel), all subsequent outlets should technically be protected. I always use one for anything in moisture-prone areas, but I had one case not long ago where multiple in one chain had a downstream outlet constantly tripping the 1st one upstream.

Still haunted by that. At least it kept me out of the military. I would have written it with the guy on the stairs shooting him afterwards to make it all a circle of hopelessness.
