You can search the whole country on craigslist? What part of the south are you in?

Also which gen Montero do you recommend?

Recently momma bears 4Runner sunroof won’t slide back(not that we ever really use it) but it was also starting to get a lil gym sock smell inside(I have no idea why I’m the only one who smells the wretched stank) so i was pretty sure a drain was clogged. I was still able to tilt it up luckily and get to the T25 bolts and lift the glass. Lots of debris and shmetzle up in there and in the track. Front driver drain was definitely clogged so I put some weed wacking wire on a drill and sent it down, cleared it and chased the other side to be sure, also located the rears and pulled the breather plug and sprayed water to the back of the assembly to make sure they were clear, good to go. Without the glass, the track slides back fine, I’m sure it’s binding in the weird track that the glass perch travels thru when it tilts and slides back, I couldn’t find my Taylor Lube(bad ass food grade lube I used to use at MCDoodles on the ice cream machines) to grease the track, hopefully I can find it before groceries tomorrow and button it all back up

    Searchtempest.com. I'm in Atlanta.

You want a Gen 2 SR model...gets you the rear locker and 3.5 V6 instead of 3.0 V6 or a 1998/9 Gen 2.5 with the winter package. All Gen 2.5s have the 3.5 V6, but the 2000 was not available with the rear locker.

Awesome tip on the weed wacker string on drill combo. Works nicely in that application it looks like.

I use a barbed flexible plastic plumbers drain cleaner ($3) to clean out the debris that wedges into Tundras front door/quarter panel pockets.

Oooo I was wondering about that, do you just go at it from the bottom where you see all the “friends” waving at you? Where does it all come from, the cowl?

Most likely the cowl. Stuff falls through and around the screen and then washes down to the quarter panels and gets trapped.

I fold that hard plastic flap back and start pulling crap out with the drain cleaner.

I doesn’t get too bad now, as I shoot the hose in there when doing a wash which flushes it.

A couple years ago it was real bad. Could have mulched a garden!

    2nd gen 4Runner used the 2.2 4banger or 3.0 v6

3rd gen used the 2.7 4 banger and the 3.4 v6 (same as T100 and 1st gen tundra).

    What is a Gen 2.5???

    E locker went thru 2000.

More info here (see post #3): If anyone gets a 3rd Gem 4runner, must have new radiator and LBJs if you know whats good for you...

I had no idea they offered a manual. Just how rare are they?

Around here I've noticed that the 3rd gens are still so expensive you can almost buy a 4th gen for the same price.

Recently I saw a 4th Gen 4Runner 4x4 with the V8(which is what I want in that gen) in good condition, with around 225k, for $4,500.

The 4th gens had full time 4x4 and no standard locker right? I know the 4th gens are less popular but I like them.

Nice day today. Going to close the final chapter on these doors. Think this is the 5th time of removing/re-inserting these panels without breaking anything. Gotta start treading lightly. Less is more.

3rd Gen 4Runners with manual are not rare but quite uncommon and in good condition are pulling $10k+...which is crazy. Not all 4x4 4th Gens are Full time 4wd, V6 were not, but V8s were is my understanding. No rear locker, but you could get a CDL. That is a decent price on that 4th Gen..V8 4x4s are the most sought after 4th Gen, but if I was going that route I'd go o for a 2005+ GX470 (VVTi and 5sp) w/3rd row.

Is there a YouTube how-to tutorial covering the removal of the door panel on a 1st gen? I found one for the 2nd gen, but not the 1st.

There is for the rear panel. I watched it last year. No link, but its a 8 year old video of a guy in his driveway doing his drivers side rear panel to do a speaker swap.

The front I figured out on my own. Best tool to use is a brake star adjuster lever and use it to wedge/lever at the bottoms of the panels. Once you have it opened enough to fit your fingers in then start working your way up the sides as each snap in plug pulls from the doors clips.

You’ll need to remove one screw from the rear door hand cup and 4 screws from the front panel (two at pillar and two at door handle) before doing the above.

Make sure all your plugs are all lined up in their mounts before reinstall. Start at the top and work down pushing lightly and then hammer fisting to lock. It helps to roll your front window down when reinstalling so that the metal guide lines up.

Before removal tips: There are electrical connectors on the front doors. Best to do the door lock/window switches first. Use the brake wedge on the north/south ends of cover trim and wedge up slowly. Its a wedge style clip. Disconnect the wires and proceed with panel removal. I like to leave the door courtesy light in place and disconnect wire after panel removal as its safer to not damage.

I can walk you through it if need be.

Am I the only one that has trouble putting the panel back on? The top has to be lined up a certain way that I've not mastered. I can do the Rav4's door panel in seconds but the Tundra is different.

I’ve found its easier to reinstall front panel with the glass down. It is a bit tricky.

Key tip: Make sure your plugs are all lined up still once the top is ‘hooked on’. Reason I say this is because the wrestling match makes them jar loose. You need to pry the panel back and inspect or you loose/break a plug.

If I bought a 4Runner it would either be a manual v6 3rd gen (hopefully one with an elocker... Fucking unicorn) or a 4th gen v8 for sure. The solid axle 1st gens are cool but under powered and only the first few years of that gen were solid axle. The 2 door version of the 2nd gen are cool but the engine options suck. The 5th gen is fugly and if I wanted a suv that big I'd rather it be a v8 4th gen or a 1st gen Sequoia or a Land Cruiser.

Im not sure if it was the 4th or 5th gen that first got the full time 4wd. I believe the elocker was still an option on 4th and 5th gens, but I know the manual transmission was not

I love those gx470s. I just wish they had an optional elocker. I've seen people swap em in from FJC

I’m pretty sure our 5th gen 4runner has the same if not goofier way of getting the door cards back in(I replaced chrome handles for Mathew black handles) and you had to hold your tounge just right to get the top in. I feel like I struggled the most in the tundra, trying to keep/get the door opener handle in the right spot

It needs some new hoses both cooling & power steering as well as new tires. It’s burgundy like the one Sarah Conner drove in the latest Terminator movie. I don’t actually have pics right now, but they were available from the factory with front & rear e-lockers, solid axles f&r. They were All Wheel Drive so they have a viscous center diff that was available overseas with a center locker. The US versions didn’t have the switch, but you can order the switch, the wiring is already there. 33 inch tires fit with no lift. I have taken it through the rock garden at Hungry Valley OHV in stock trim. When I have some spare cash I’ll be putting it back on the trail.
