Let this be a lesson as to why tops for our trucks are the only tops that will fit our trucks.

 

That thread is still a bit of an embarrassment for me, but it's still a good guide. I plan to update before long, but going in a different direction than planned...Either way, it's a how-to, should-you, other-options, cautionary-tale, this-is-why-the-topper-thread-advice-is-to-wait-and-find-an-intact-topper thread.

My topper is going to be good in the end, and if I knew then what I know now, would have been ~$1,000 total. Taking into account the learning process, it's a bit more expensive.

The rear glass is one thing. But I also need a rack. And I'm impatient. So I ended up buying a new Yakima rack, rather than constantly scouring Marketplace for used racks that would fit a naked roof (less and less common these days). Not cheap.

Topper - $340

Ideally, if you know you want a rack, you wait till a topper with a rack comes up. I was in scarcity mindset and when I saw the type of topper I wanted in the color I wanted for a price I could afford, I jumped. I still haven't seen anything come up nearby with a rack, for an AC, in black/grey. So maybe I made the right call. But definitely got more expensive than planned.

Currently running a plywood rear window. Some warping because I wasn't going to use a ton of adhesive tape for a temporary fix. So much work to scrape that crap off. But it secures my gear, locks, and keeps the majority of the weather and dust out.

 

I feel like maybe a Leer 100XL back window or something would fit, or something from SnugTop. Surely they can't be THAT one-off, right? What manufacturer in their right mind would make a decision that pigeonholes them into sticking with a one-off product?

The one thing that really, truly pisses me off about camper shells is, I KNOW without a fact, someone has a compatibility sheet out there for windows and doors. I KNOW there's a system or a list floating around out there for the seals and other shit. There's a reason you can call Leer, call SnugTop, call ARE and others and give your serial number and they can figure out what model you've got and know if windows are in stock and how much they'll cost. It irks the shit outta me that nobody has managed to (to my knowledge) leak that data. And it's unacceptable to me that, for the companies who've folded over the years, that data isn't out in the public at this point.

As a consumer, I should have access to information that would enable me to have purchase options on shit like this. It's unnerving to me.

 

I completely agree. I've run into the same thing with camper trailers.

You're probably right, and for a little while I was searching rear windows, looking at dimensions, seeing if something would fit. Went with custom cut glass. When it shows up, I'll report the results, good or bad.

Looks like it might be a match to my Thunder Grey but it's way out of my budget and too far to fetch.

 

Here's a high rise in SC that would match your truck maybe (or maybe @beemerphile) also for a very reasonable $300.

Not for $500. It can be done but will cost a bit. That's now a $200 top at best as is. I'd bring up the cost and hit him real low. If he won't budge, walk away.
