My thoughts for a while have been that this (dropping the trans cooler) was not a cost saving measure now, but an experiment for the future.

I think the reason it defaults into S4 is that, as several have written, you should be in D with heavy load and in tow/haul mode, unless going downhill. When you switch to S-mode when towing, it is primarily to downshift going down hill and utilize engine braking to help decelerate. No engine braking is available in S4 or S5. So if your in 6th and suddenly hit a 15% downhill grade, you don't want to immediately jump to S3, you want to be coasting one gear above above engine braking before you make that downshift. If you need to switch to S-mode going downhill, D to S5 and you're two shifts from where you want to be braking and that isn't very efficient either.

S-mode is not for protecting you transmission temps, that is what the cooler is for...sorry '19-'21 guys. I would be soooo pissed. Toyota is smart, and this was a great design AI system. Unfortunately, I think the disappearing trans cooler was a corporate experiment leading into the new model. Toyota wanted a real estimate of how many like sgtfluffy 16 and 327Tundra and myself are actually out using their tundras the way Toyota originally marketed and built them. Now that they are going to this B.S TTV6 +/- hybrid powertrain, they want an estimate of how many will fail in the warranty period, and will the cost be worth it. Toyota may be mimicking more than Ford's powertrain, they may also be mimicking Ford's business model.

Got it. That makes more sense. I think I remember you sharing that info before. Thanks.

Just noticed my transmission on my 2020 start shifting "differently" I have the cooler installed too. I am going to take it to the dealer to see what's going on. It could be I don't know how to drive.

I'd check fluid level before letting a dealer look at it, especially since you modified it.

I will. I would be surprised if it was off, but who knows. Hopefully it's something simple.

Thanks for posting this. I have noticed the same things with my transmission but thought it must be normal. I'll have it checked when I take it in for my fuel pump recall fix probably next week.

I assume you're not going to the trouble to remove the cooler retrofit before taking it in? (Best course if you leave it, is don't mention it imo.) Don't forget to let us know how dealership service guys react to your cooler install. That's been another ongoing discussion here.

I am dropping it off tomorrow for them to check. I told them I added the cooler and just need to make sure its at the appropriate level. We will see what they come back with. Luckily, the Service manager and the master mechanic are Tundra owners. So they understand the passion.

    Heard back from the dealership....

Transmission was over filled. It appears the transmission had enough fluid in there for the cooler already. The guy I had install didn't check correctly and just added the 1.5 quarts.

The master mechanic set everything to the correct level, then drove it for about 50 miles and said its shifting normal now. He doesn't think there is any long term damage, but they made a note that it was overfilled. I asked if the trans cooler is an issue and they said not a problem they just have to note that there is an aftermarket part.

They only charged me for an hour of labor due to it having an aftermarket part.

I pick it up in a couple of hours so we will see how it drives. I trust thing mechanic as he did my Cam tower seals on my 2018. Kept the truck an extra two days to make sure everything went back together smoothly. He also drives a Rock Warrior so I have to trust his judgment.

Genuinely curious how the tech that installed the cooler ended up overfilling it based solely off the procedure for checking/filling the gearbox.

No idea. I should have just done it myself but I don't have a garage and it was in the middle of winter. He probably just unscrewed the fill plug and pushed the whole bottle in there.

2005. Why? Only Toyota knows for sure. The rest of us can speculate, apply common sense, logic, etc.

Oil dip sticks are going away as well - my wife's car doesn't have one. You look on the little computer to see the oil level. Apparently people never checked even with the stick.

I'm sorry, but your theory is utterly absurd! You really think Toyota is purposefully willing to ruin its reputation as an incredibly reliable truck and alienate 3 years worth of Tundra customers from future Tundra purchases, all for some data? There are a hell of a lot easier ways to gain data on how Tundra users are using their trucks.

It appears they have proven to themselves that it is okay without the external cooler because the 2022 also does not have one.

Does anyone have a link or process on how to check/change transmission fluid in the 2019+ MY?

I think it’s the same as other years, you just don’t have a thermostat to pin.

A 6 spd manual option with a big clutch plate would fix this problem. Toyota probably wouldn’t sell any of them though.

I don’t know. I thought the same thing, but if you look at the bottom right there is an arrow for “ATF Flow”. It almost looks like it has both.
