If I had the time then I would. But time is the one thing I don’t have a lot of.

It can go both ways. Either be a good (efficient) tech and get it done in less time, or rush through doing half-assed work just to get done and start the next job.

Warranty work does not pay well, It's the campaigns that pay well for the techs. Your GM buddy obviously has no clue what the techs do and how they get paid. Yes they both generate money, but the time spent on warranty work does not come close to other work and campaigns. My buddy is a tech, he stays away from trivial warranty work. Theres not enough incentive and he works at 125%~ bonus. Time is money for these techs.

I think he meant in this present time. Not in general. Almost everyone is slow right now so some work is better than no work. The dealership I went to only had 2 techs. They were rotating days and aren’t getting full hours so they gotta be hungry. I say that in a non disrespectful way.

Ah gotcha. My bad. Yah times are tough now. Buddies shop laid off all their apprentices and junior techs.

Hes doing oil changes and basic service work. I told him he should be just happy hes still employed.

His dealership is still busy enough to keep all the regular techs. Sales haven't missed a beat.. where I am at, people have money. He said they are always selling cars and that hasnt slowed but the tech work has slowed down about 30%.

Some dealerships may, but the 2 I have worked at are strictly flat rate. I get paid nothing to show up to work and if there isn't work to do I stand around for 8 hours and leave with nothing. Like the others said if there is work and you are quick you can beat the labor time on lots of jobs and end up getting paid for 12 hours in a day when you are only there 8 hours. However, a certain percentage of cars are not the kind of thing you can just rush through considering many people avoid the dealership until every other place they have taken the car gives up. Lots of people see the dealership as a last resort to get their car fixed, so we end up with lots of weird problems.
