I am curious though is there really a mechanical difference?

Fuel delete mod Cup holder upgrade
No. Which is why you'll see comments about 5w30 being fine up until the recent years where the recommendation changed to 0w20.

NOOOOO. It's the good old USA and its EPA/CAFE, tree hugging, worlds gonna end, ice caps are melting standards that save the planet one oil change at a time. And let's not forget the .001 extra MPG we get. The excitement I feel when I do my part.

The 0 "weight" is irrelevant (it's actually 0 "winter"); it's the second number that is relevant. Check out the video below. Basically, your oil viscosity doesn't get thinner as it gets colder, but quite the opposite. The 'w' or 'winter' rating isn't an oil viscosity rating as the second number is rated - its measured as rotational and pumping ability/resistance. The oil retains the viscosity characteristics of the second number rating, but the engine is able to crank at cold temperatures and the pump is able to still pump the oil at low temps. The video has actual numbers if you are interested, but I think 0wAnything is able to crank and pump at -30C or -35C.

If you watch 'The Car Nut' on YouTube, he firmly recommends 5,000 mile oil and filter changes. I have a 2011 5.7 4x4 with TRD Supercharger... some towing and off-roading. The owners manual recommends 0w20, or 5w20, as is marked on the oil cap. The owners manual stipulates that a higher viscosity can be used. I was using Mobil One 0W30, but recently started using 'Mobil 5000' in either 5W30 or 10W30, which is now synthetic blend. Running 5,000 mile oil & filter changes. Personally, i recommend choosing one good Brand, and staying with it. Due to some differences in chemistry, oil seals might be affected, and shrink or expand, causing leaks. Lookin at M1 0W40, you may find it has a European formulation. I regularly get Blackstone oil analyses. Also, Mobil One filters are not made as good as in the past... basically as good as (not better than) OEM Toyota branded. And that goes for the entire line of M1 filters.

The difference being that I've never seen Toyota brand filters at Canadian Tire before.

It rarely gets below freezing where I live, so 0-20 is kind of a joke. I used it for the first 230,000 miles on my 2016 (at 10K intervals) before switching to 5W-30. I have two Tundras now, and 5W-30 is what they will be getting year round.

Might be a different story if I lived in Frozenasscheeks Montana or something.

I went through page 602 of my manual again because I forgot. The 2018 manual makes it sound like you will die (or maybe worse) if you don't use 0w-20 from absolute zero to infinity Kelvin.

I might be exaggerating a little. Just a little though.

I mix everything and anything left over in my garage as long as it is new. If I find a half or quarter full oil container in my garage at oil change time, it is going in. Right now I am running a 3w-27 Castrol State 1, if my math is correct, I think.

Seriously though, I am switching to 5W-30 if I can. I sound like a diesel with 0w-20.

I’m about to start mixing stuff just to deplete the stock of half used containers I’ve got stored. Seems like nothing I own takes precisely the amount I buy and there’s always a quarter to half a quart left over.
