$1000 deposit required by dealer

Hi Guys,

I’m currently negotiating a deal on a 2020 Limited DC TRD and the dealer is asking for a non refundable deposit to locate the required color combination of white with black interior. They’re saying the vehicle should be in their inventory by next Thursday. It is refundable should I actually buy the vehicle. Non refundable if I walk away.

I’m not really comfortable with that as that would provide them with leverage.

What are your guys’d thoughts?

 

I'd find a different dealer. Call around, most likely it's sitting on somebody's lot nearby.

Never trust a dealer that pulls that stuff. I can find my truck on my own.

 

Don’t throw down the deposit. Wait until the truck hits the lot. Not like the dealer is moving a lot of product at the moment.

 

Good point. The car dealers are probably going to be slow for a while. I wouldn't say take advantage of them, but also don't get boned by one. If they are asking you to put down a non refundable deposit, are you getting the truck you want for what you want to pay?

We had the color we wanted brought in on both our Tundra and Rav. No deposit required or even suggested.

 

No idea. You are the guy doing the deal. Tell them to send you something in writing so you know what you are getting yourself into.

 

I’d bet you can find one if not several if you look on line. I just used CarGurus, sign up, input your vehicle criteria you want, and many will come up.
I just did this process, didn’t pay a dime for the sites use. They make it easy to contact the seller who ever they are.

Where are you located?
Go online and look, check dealership inventory and you will find the dealership that they were getting it from.

So far figures have been verbal... 6k off MSRP and 29k for my RAM... I’m happy with the prices quoted.
Asked for everything in writing and I’m still waiting.

There is a similar spec truck at a dealer 45 miles away, for which I have a quote. Should revisit them.

I put a 500 deposit on mine but it was refundable if I changed my mind. They are refundable. Talk to his boss or another dealer

It was in writing. I got to pick all my options with the spreadsheet from dealer. I bought the truck tho

 

Deposit my butt! When looking for my 2017 it took my dealer 3 weeks to find the truck i wanted. They didn't want to bring into the dealership until I put money down. i quickly reminder them that when I purchased my 2011 that when it arrived it had a ding in the fender, and I refused to accept delivery.
So, they backed down on the requirement.

This sounds like a scam. If you put money down you can’t walk away if they don’t honor your price. That’s actually really conniving. Gotta watch your back you know!

 

Like others said get everything in writing. I don’t see a problem with a deposit if you’ve already negotiated a price etc. and they just have to find the exact model you want. Looking at it from their end they could pay to have it shipped in from who knows where and then you could change your mind and screw them over. I paid a $500 deposit for a dealer out of state to hold my truck until I got there a day later and didn’t think twice.

 

These are the real terms for deposit if dealer is for real.

Walk away. I literally just bought one on the 20th; and the dealership told me "Yeah, it'll take a bit longer, but we can get one within 500 miles; and no it won't cost you any extra."

 

That’s a common color and trim no deposit needed unless you order it from the factory.

 

Run don't walk. The only time a deposit should be needed is if the factory hasn't even built your truck yet and you are special ordering it.

Keep searching and hold on to your money.

 

Do not go back to that Stealership!! They are not the only place to find what your looking for and that specific truck isn't the only one made like it. Take your time and find somewhere else and you'll thank us all later

 

Never heard of this. We built our Tundra and they asked for nothing until it showed up. If this is your first experience with them, imagine what they'll be like if you actually need help. Leave

 

One word comes to mind, "RUN". Run away, that's a no good, dirty sales tactic. You can easily find the turck you want. Hell, you can go to Toyota's website and build your truck and see who has it. Any dealer pulling that $#!+ should have their license pulled.
