Fair question....I’ve read that newer engines are going to variable flow oil pumps (not tied to the crank) so life is getting weirder all the time.

Whatever happened to the days of an oil change every 3,000 miles! That was before the internet...much simpler times indeed.

My 2011 chrysler tc has a variable pressure pump. On start up it like 70-80 psi once the oil warm up to 170+ it drops to 36 at idle.

I just got an email from Costco that their Kirkland brand is $5 off, so $25 delivered for 0w-20, 5w-20 and 5w-30. Looks like it is good through 1-19.

I wonder what the million mile toyotas ran in their engines. I'd guess the viscosity and OCIs recommended by Toyota. Why would anyone decide that they know better than billions of dollars spent on engineering? I just don't get it. I run 0w20 in my 2015 5.7 with toyota oil filters, just like Toyota recommends and I have 100k platinum warranty that I don't plan on screwing up by going cowboy on oil changes lol.
Can't comprehend guys who say run 10w50 or blend 3 brands or run 30k miles.

I bet they ran 5w30 and not 15w40 or whatever else the felt like doing cuz its "thicker" or "less noisy". Idk I guess I just dont understand why mess with something so proven

If “tolerances” are so much tighter these days, why do so many European cars call for 0w-30 or 0w-40? For years european cars were considered more finely machined than domestics.

I just don’t buy the idea that machines are so much finer than 20 years ago. For gosh sakes we built a space program before antilock brakes. Fine machining has always been available.

Im not claiming that i know more than a toyota engineer, but you do have to objectively look at the fact that all these thinner oils rose in popularity at the same time that the epa was clamping down on fleet fuel standards for automakers. Quite the coincidence that we magically made the machining tolerances tighter at the same time.

I most strongly believe in the theory that oils got better, so they were able to use thinner oils that wouldn’t break down as quickly as older oils

If I knew for sure that running 5-30 in my truck would not hurt it, I would use that weight, especially if it has no real effect on gas mileage. I do not like this 0-20 weight at all, especially since my vehicles seem to burn oil with that weight.

The Kirkland price is for a two-pack, FYI. So it's $25 for 10 quarts.

Yup, 2 five qt jugs for that price. In store, it is $5 cheaper than online so if the coupon is valid in store, it should be $20 for 10 quarts.

Toyota says If you can't find or use 0W-20W for an oil change, its O.K to use 5W-20, but , the next oil change must be 0W-20. so its obvious they (Toyota's mechanical engineers) Don't want you using 5W-20, or anything else, but in an emergency 5W-20 won't ruin your motor. Just dont use it all the time, but if you "think" know more, than the mechanical engineers, that went to college, have a degree, etc. then by all means, go right ahead, put whatever you want in there, but like I said being a machinist for 40 years, and building motors, trannys, and everything else, I'm not gonna argue with success. I followed the Toyota specs for my 2003 Highlander, V-6. 5W-30 oil and Toyota filters, every 5,000 miles, and as of now, 345,000 miles !! ,still purrs like a kitten, runs perfect, etc. Let me know when you get there.

Here is a page from a 2020 Land Cruiser owners manual for the UAE (united arab eremites). The 5.7L is one of the engines used for this vehicle.

The ONLY place in the world that Toyota specifies ONLY 0W-20 is the USA and the ONLY reason is to meet the CAFE regulations mandated by the NHTSA. Has nothing to do with any of the mechanics of the engines.

It’s not Toyota but Toyota USA. We have CAFE standards the rest of the world don’t have....if you submit a vehicle for testing then you’re locked in when you sell it. Oil, ecm software, tires, ...

0w-20 is not magic, it’s just oil. Toyota USA says it’s ok to use and meets their efficiency and protection goals.

Because other countries dont have CAFE standards

Im so glad someone found that manual. I looked for a while for an aussie one and couldnt find it. 5w-30 quiets down the valve tick. It’s great

Disagree. I just went 14k with Amsoil and the Blackstone report was right on par with their avg 6700 mile oil change numbers.

Daxm! Based on the temp range chart, in Austin Tx and around all we need is 20-50!!!

But I'll stick to full synthetics like mobil 1 EP - high mileage 5-30. No fears here.

Of course not, I mean I didn't start off meaning to blend, but I have a daughter whose older prius uses a little more oil between OC than I'd like (2.5 qts/5k), so once I was low on 5-30 and only had 10-40 (for mowers), used it, seemed fine and have kept on blending ever since, I mean its Really hot here in central texas, over 100 often, so adding a slightly heavier oil when topping off brings the viscosity back up as the oil ages and the heat turns up.

Its just oil, we're not combining different chemical elements that will conflict, heat up or otherwise change their chemical structure just because they came out of different factories.

I wouldn't do it with trans fluid, engine coolant (toyota OEM only for those two for me), go figure?! Luck all.

I don't disagree with you. I was a toolmaker for 11 years and worked with very close tolerances (ten thousandths). I read what you posted in my manual as well before you posted it.
