07 whistles at speeds above 40 mph

With or without the fan turned on, my '07 whistles at speeds above 40 mph or so. The cabin filter is clean, and I can reduce the noise slightly by turning the recirculating button on.

The sound is annoying... has anyone else dealt with an unwanted whistle?

 

So it sounds like it’s coming from the HVAC system? Maybe check the vents between the cab and bed to make sure they’re not obstructed. Just a thought

 

I will inspect the vents to the outside - thank you, and I need to add that I can hear the whistle even after cracking a window open while driving... it sounds like it's coming from the dash area, but it's really surround sound.

 

I had a really high frequency whistle from the mesh net inside the intake. It was like a dog whistle, some people could hear it, some couldn't. I was ready to trade the truck in until I found someone on here with a similar problem. Went away as soon as I removed it

 

Mine is a super high pitched whistle, and I know that mesh screen is still in the TB.

I just cut out the metal screen with some dikes and put it back in. Worth a shot, it only takes a couple minutes

 

It's just happy.

 

I removed the throttle body screen, and it continues to whistle.

It even whistles coasting down hill at 60 mph...

 

I wonder if it’s possible one of your diversion doors is not closing all the way. Are you getting proper function throughout the HVAC system. Feet, face, defroster etc.? I notice you said it changes a little bit when you put it on recirculation. Maybe it’s possible that actuator is not completely closing. But the whistle shouldn’t happen in either mode.

 

The system is functioning properly in all modes.

 

Maybe to isolate it, leave the system off and block off the intake vent in the cowl. See if it is in fact coming through there.

 

Sounds like a plan, but I don't know how to access the vent in the cowl.

 

Maybe block this area off here with some painters tape. It’s not a 100% seal because it does drain out of there before it would ever enter into the truck. You would have to remove the cowl to block it completely and access the vent behind it.

I taped off the cowl vent... no change. I folded the mirrors in... no change.

I am beginning to think it's my extra long doors, because I noticed the clear plastic sheet that is held on by some type of tar substance was looking kind of ragged the last time I had the door panels off to replace the door speakers. Any thoughts on this being the culprit?

 

That’s a thought! It was it was under the impression it’s just a vapor barrier but I imagine it could keep wind noise down.

 

Also some people had issues with the weatherstrip around the front window causing a noise. I think they have an updated one.

 

I know that this sounds rudimentary, but have you closely checked the area surrounding the windshield? Maybe the areas around where the mirror fit to the doors (sail panel)? I know that there's also a grommet of sorts that fits at the base of the A-pillar that is easy to knock loose...

The process of elimination has narrowed my focus down to the doors, and I am looking at the Door Water Deflectors specifically. These are the Plastic sheets used underneath the door trim panel to prevent water intrusion. @Roman, do you have these for a 2007 RCSB?

Does the tar like adhesive stuff that holds them in place come with them?

 

You know, I've never ordered those before. Not even for body shops around here. I would say that it does not come with the adhesive, but I am guessing. Only way to know for sure is if we order one in and see.

 

There is one more thing that I need to investigate before I order the water deflectors... the whistle is loudest and seems to come from behind the corner cover on both doors. This cover hides the bolts and wiring associated with the outside mirrors, maybe the gasket seal on the set of pre-owned mirrors has failed ??

 

I thought that there was another, more substantial rubber gasket for the mirrors, I can't seem to find it on a dealer parts list though. I'll try to look at my truck to see if it's visible without actually removing the mirror....

Ya, I can just barely see something in there. I think that the mirror would have to come off to get a p/n though, and as sure you're aware, the door panel has to come off first. Maybe Roman can find it without breaking out the hand tools.

 

The foam on the mirror is attached to a rubber gasket that is attached to the mirror base where it mounts to the door. Looks like it is still there in the picture of the mirror. I guess it's possible it could have failed, but it doesn't look bad in the pic.

 

That picture is a stock photo of a brand new mirror, I will probably remove & inspect mine tomorrow or Thursday.

 

I believe that I have nailed down the source of the whistle!

My temporary solution: Painters tape over the top mirror bolt hole, another hole plus the top of the electrical power connection. I then cut some sound deadening acoustical foam and stuffed into the corner covers. A quick road trip confirms that my makeshift solution is working. I will use this solution for now, and work out a permanent solution later on.

 

Were you able to determine if there were the factory rubber gaskets between the mirror and the door?
