Haven’t looked under my truck yet, to see if it’s possible. But after looking through several different sources, yes the conversion to the 38 gallon tank can be done, not cheaply no matter which way you go.

So I’m left wondering if there’s room on the passenger side to install another 26 gallon tank directly across from the original one. Plumb & pipe it in, then use a toggle switch to choose which tank to draw from, like the old 2 tank trucks used to do?

Obviously having a fuel fill door on both sides would be a bit inconvenient, but not undoable.

I have a 07 Crewmax SR5 that I use for pilot car work & better range between fuel ups would be a good thing.

My other thought is to just add an in-bed aux tank, some can be plumbed in so it works in tandem with the stock tank, but I’m thinking leave it as a transfer tank that I could use to refuel my truck or someone else’s should they need it.

The aux tank can be had for about $1,000, with the electric pump, hose & handle. It’s a simple bolt down install. Gives an additional 42 gallon capacity, not that I’d fill it up completely very often. It only takes up about 9” of the floor, between the front wall & the crossover toolbox I have. The bed space isn’t a big issue, as this truck isn’t really used for hauling anything other than the equipment required for a pilot truck.

The only downside I see of the in-box version is potential fumes out of the vent.

Anybody else have an opinion on this?

I figured that might be an issue, but like I said, never really looked under there with this specific reason in mind. Never really had a need for more fuel capacity until now.

    Thanks for your reply.

It's awesome how you can do a little minor work just to get a bigger gas tank but the only problem or issues is that there is going to be a lot more extra weight on the truck now especially on the driver side. All you have to do is bounces out the weight on the passenger side than you're g2g. Let's see in the long run how the gas tank is Worthy to do or not. Anyhow it's a great project for more fuel but it's going to kill you at the station.

Anyone with the larger gas tanks add any fuel stabilizer?

I only use it for towing and long distance road trips so the tundy sits more than it's being driven as I don't DD it.

    Thnx

Enjoyed the write up. Anyone considering the larger tank should make the switch. It is very nice to have while traveling. Wouldn’t want a smaller tank now

Enjoyed the writeup as well... have been doing a lot of reading. Ordered the Transferflow 46 today, can't wait to make the swap! Range is only part of the PIA when pulling my 24' car hauler, a lot of gas stations are very congested and tough to manuver when pulling the trailer. Will be so much nicer to have nearly 2x the range. Thanks to everyone who contributed here!

I have all the parts for the 38 gallon swap waiting to put on, but now wishing I would of waited for the discontinued tank to be re-introduced with a extra emissions canister :(

Was wondering how you dealt with the fuel lines that are run back further for the 26 gallon tank since the 38 gallon tank is so much further forward.
About to swap and would appreciate any help you can offer with that part, the rest seems pretty straight forward and you did a great job with the parts list.

From what I read and ask of others is they just pop them out of the tank runners and run the lines on top similar to what the TF tank would do, the issue is clearance were the new front cross-member goes. Tomorrow I am hopefully going to try and make a small bracket or spacer to mount the parking brake lever up higher and start fitting the cross-member. From looking at it last weekend and spraying some penetrating fluid on it, the lever seems to be mounted by 2 screws.
I have about a half tank of fuel so just doing some preliminary work.
I am going to be drilling and not sure on 2 or 4 holes per side. I might even cut the bottom off like nuclearlemon did, as my truck isn't lifted so the bar might be tight squeeze..

Anybody want to buy a 38 tank package? Close to U. P. of Michigan :) I have to get ramps or a hoist as it's pretty tight under there with the side steps and no lift!

I have a 15 and have the holes too for the crossmember. What did you use to attach the crossmember to the frame? Frame Rivets or bolts and nuts?

I asked a guy at work and might be able to rent/borrow time with his hoist. Otherwise not sure on the projects future, if I could unload it for what I got into it I might consider. Alberta is a little bit farther than Texas though!

So did you install your 38g tank or no?
    How come you selling it?

I didn't install it yet, waiting to hear back on renting some hoist time. I might attempt this weekend again in my driveway, with jackstands under rear axle.
I would sell it because I would put the money towards the TF 46gal tank which wasn't available when I purchased all the parts.

You can get this one with the spray-on-bed-liner spray coat for an extra $200 (bringing the total to $1887)

I did the install in a drive way on @jc153 truck in 6 hrs start to finish w no lift and he has sliders... it’s easily doable all you need is a jack and some patience

Yeah I had lifted the front with my oil change ramps, I think lifting the rear would be better. Trying to talk myself out of it I guess. And of course when the snow is gone it's busy time and hard to work on all day projects. My biggest concern is the drilling. Would you use multiple bit sizes or one of those step bits? That is going to be the hardest part I think. I am thinking only 2 holes per side should be enough to support the additional crossmember.

Two hopes a side is plenty... for the drilling just make sure it’s a good bit keep it lubricated w cutting oil and I’m not sure a step bit will work. I’d just get a good steel drill bit designed for metal. And speed is not your friend when drill thick steel.. heat destroys bits and drills and actually makes it harder to drill

I had mine installed by a friend with a local shop. 2 bolts per side is totally fine for the front cross member. Honestly it seems like it is really extra insurance and is not supporting that much. If you look at the TF and LRA tanks they are larger and MUCH heavier and they only use the 2 stock mounting points. Honestly, if you are not off roading the truck I bet the two straps would hold the tank just fine.

The thought did cross my mind, but the Toyota tank is plastic which could deform over time.

I Was wondering this on the way back from Atlanta last week, dual 38s, would be the ultimate highway cruiser. Could it be done?
